When communicating via modem, it is pos-
sible to monitor and remote control the ECL
2000.
In this application, the ECL 2000 acts as the
slave, that is, the remote device always ini-
tialises a communication session, which can
be, for example, a main station or a PC.
This is to say that the ECL 2000 will answer
calls, but not initialise them.
Once the modem connection is established,
communication takes place using the
Command protocol as described in the ECL
2000 Technical Manual, Serial Interface.
The ECL 2000 is provided with 2 EIA 232
connectors, one on the rear panel and one
(normally hidden behind a small cover plate)
on the front panel. These connectors are
coupled in parallel, meaning that only one of
the connectors can be used at a time.
Communication speed on both connectors is
19.200 baud.
The modem cable required for communi-
cating with the ECL 2000 must connect
each of the 8 pins to the corresponding pin
on the modem’s connector, i.e. DSR to
DSR, RTS to RTS, etc. as described in the
ECL 2000 Technical Manual, Serial Inter-
face.
By default, the ECL 2000 is set up to sup-
port a Hayes compatible modem of the type
Lasat unique 144.
To change the modem initialisation strings
,
you must connect a PC to the ECL 2000
and use a terminal emulator programme to
communicate with the ECL 2000.
The ECL 2000 uses its standard interactive
communication protocol for serial line
communication, no matter whether the con-
nection is established via a modem or di-
rectly.

However the ECL 2000 switches to using a
CRC (cyclic redundancy check) encoded
protocol on modem connections detected by
a <STX> character (02 hexadecimal) in the
input.
Note:
To ensure that the electromagnetic emission
from the ECL 2000 lies within the bounda-
ries limits specified in the standard
EN50081-1, a permanently installed modem
cable must have a maximum length of 0.30
m.
