Intraoral constancy test DIN6868-5 Instructions for use
1 Introduction
These instructions describe how to perform the constancy test in accordance
with DIN 6868-5 on KaVo intraoral X-ray systems.
These instructions apply to the following:
KaVo ProXam iX intraoral X-ray unit
KaVo ProXam iS digital sensor
KaVo ProXam iP imaging plate scanner
NOTE
Read these instructions thoroughly before performing the constancy test.
The X-ray images of a test phantom are prepared for the constancy test.
According to the X-ray Ordinance (Röntgenverordnung), the constancy
test must be carried out by the operator once a month to confirm image
quality. The test results determine whether the image generation meets
the legal requirements, i.e. if the quality of the image generation has
remained constant within the defined thresholds within the framework of the
acceptance test. These thresholds are defined in the appropriate acceptance
test protocols supplied with the device. The service technician who installs
the X-ray equipment is responsible for carrying out and documenting the
acceptance test.
The constancy test is carried out according to DIN 6868-5
Image quality
assurance in diagnostic X-ray departments, Part 5: RöV constancy testing
of dental radiographic equipment
and the test exposure must be evaluated
according to the criteria defined therein.
To compare the constancy test exposure with the acceptance test exposure
(reference exposure) it is very important that all settings used for the image
acquisition and image processing remain constant.
The dialogue windows shown in these instructions only serve as examples
unless otherwise specified.
NOTE
The X-ray units and the image processing program have separate manuals
that should be used with these instructions.

3 Preparing Romexis
Steps
1. New patient is set up by a service technician.
Images are filed based on patient's name. The patient must therefore be
selected before the exposure.
The service technician sets up a corresponding “patient” in the Romexis
program so that test exposures can be prepared. The acceptance test
exposure (reference exposure) created by the service technician will be
filed under this “patient”.
2. Select this patient from the patient list.
For more information on Romexis, refer to
Romexis user's manual
.

4 Performing constancy test
4.1 Positioning sensor
The constancy tests must be performed with the Quart test phantom, sensor
and cone which have already been used by the service technician for the
acceptance test. The information on this is available in the corresponding
acceptance test protocol supplied with the device (form
Acceptance Test
).
Push the sensor into the large slot of the test phantom (under the groove) as
shown.
1Test phantom
2Groove
3Sensor: Active surface facing up
The active surface of the sensor must face upwards (cable on the back).
The sensor must be inserted so that it is aligned on the right; this
ensures that the sensor is positioned so that all contrast elements of
the test phantom are imaged.
NOTE
Handle the sensor cable with care. The cable is sensitive and must not be
bent.
NOTE
The sensor must be positioned in the same way for every test exposure.

4.2 Positioning imaging plate
Steps
1. Push the imaging plate into a light protection cover.
Ensure that the active surface (blue side) of the imaging plate is facing
the black side (without text) of the light protection cover.
2. Remove the adhesive strip and seal the light protection cover.
NOTE
Handle the imaging plate with care. Do not twist or bend the plate. Do
not touch the active surface (blue side), as this can damage the imaging
plate. Protect the plates from light exposure.

3. Push the light protection cover into the large slot of the Quart test
phantom (under the groove) as shown.

3Imaging plate with light protection cover
The black side (without text) of the light protection cover must be
facing up.
The light protection cover must be inserted so that it is aligned on
the right; this ensures that the imaging plate is positioned so that all
contrast elements of the test phantom are imaged.
NOTE
The imaging plate must be positioned in the same way for every test
exposure.
4.3 Positioning cone
Steps
1. Use the long cone for the test exposures.
The long cone has two positioning marks: one black and one red dot;
the cone is properly secured when the black dot is in line with the X-ray
unit's red dot.
NOTE
The test exposures must always be performed with the same equipment.

2. Position the cone as shown below.
1X-ray unit
2Long cone
3Test phantom
4Sensor/imaging plate
5Correct positioning
Place the test phantom (3) on a flat surface.
Position the cone of the X-ray unit (1) vertically on the test phantom.
The central X-ray beam must be perpendicular to the test phantom.
The cone must be positioned so that the entire sensor or imaging
plate is within the radiation field.
The cone may therefore NOT be placed in the centre of the test
phantom using the centring ring, as the lower part of the sensor or
the imaging plate are not exposed in this case.
NOTE
The cone and the test phantom must be in contact before every
exposure and must always be positioned in the same way.
4.4 Adjusting X-ray unit
The constancy tests must be performed with the device settings which are
already used by the service technician for the acceptance test, refer to the
section
Initial status for the acceptance/constancy test
(form
Acceptance
test
) for details.
Detailed instructions on the use of the X-ray unit are available in the manual
supplied with the unit.

5 Evaluating test results
The test exposure must be compared with the X-rays taken during the
acceptance test and any deviations from the baseline must be checked.
The initial status was documented by the service technician and the test
results of the acceptance test are recorded in the form
Acceptance test
. The
results established here also serve as reference values for the constancy
test exposure created here.
The test results of the constancy test exposure must be recorded separately.
The form
Constancy test
supplied with the unit is used to record the test
results of the constancy tests.
The results of the constancy tests must be entered in the table in the form
every month. The form has completed tables for the first year; after this,
you can attach a supplementary sheet with a corresponding table from your
X-ray unit book. Or alternatively you can simply copy the empty form if you
need to.
NOTE
Constancy test exposures and documents must be archived for two years.
NOTE
If there are any deviations from the baseline (reference exposure), it is
important that you immediately contact your service technician.
The constancy test exposure is to be evaluated in terms of the following
points:
Visual resolution capacity:
The visual resolution capacity is tested with the aid of a lead line test
pattern. The monitor image of the test exposure must have a minimum
resolution of 5 line pairs/mm.
Minimum contrast:

The minimum contrast is defined with the aid of low contrast elements
(drill holes). All four low contrast elements must be detectable on the
monitor screen of the test exposure.
