Chapter 1 Overview
CellPipe USB Series Users Guide 1
Chapter 1 Overview
This manual is a comprehensive users guide for the CellPipe USB Series ADSL modems.
Currently, the product line consists of:
CellPipe 20A-USB, software version 1.11.
The contents of this guide include basic information about the unit, such as hardware
installation, software setup, and information on configuration of the three different drivers:
WAN, LAN, and ATM.
What is the CellPipe 20A-USB?
The CellPipe 20A-USB is an ADSL modem connected via the USB port on your computer.
ADSL modems employ ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) framing. ATM is a protocol that
divides packets into small fixed-sized cells for rapid transmission over high-speed networks.
The ATM protocol allows various types of traffic (e.g., data, voice, and video) to be securely
and efficiently carried over the same network. ATM is being widely deployed by
telecommunications carriers in their backbone networks. Two type of ATM connections are
possible, PVC (Permanent Virtual Circuit) and SVC (Switched Virtual Circuit).
CellPipe 20A-USB features
The CellPipe 20A-USB supports the following features:
Compliance with Universal Serial Bus Specification Revision 1.1
USB bus-powered; an external power supply is not required
Three device drivers: Microsoft NDIS 4.0 WAN miniport, NDIS 4.0 LAN miniport, or
NDIS 5.0 ATM miniport
Compatibility with all T1.413, G.DMT, and G.lite compliant central office (CO) DSLAM
equipment, as well as the vast majority of deployed CAP RADSL CO equipment
Upgradeable software
Support for up to sixteen simultaneous ATM virtual connections
Microsoft Windows control panel monitoring program for adapter configuration and
connection-status verification
RJ-11 connector for a telephone line
Chapter 1. Overview

ADSL downstream data rate of up to 8Mbps
ADSL upstream data rate of up to 1024Kbps
Support for third-party PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) clients
CellPipe 20A-USB protocols
The protocol required in the configuration of the CellPipe 20A-USB depends on the
equipment deployed by the DSL service provider. There are several possibilities:
1. Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) over ATM (RFC 2364) PPP provides session setup,
user authentication (login), and encapsulation for upper-layer protocols, such as IP
(Internet Protocol). The use of PPP enables the modem to function as a dialup
modem. PPP is supported by either the WAN driver or the ATM driver.
2. Bridged/Routed Ethernet/IP over ATM (RFC 1483) This protocol enables the
modem to function as a LAN device.
3.
RFC 1577 this is another LAN-like protocol for IP address and ATM address
mapping.
4.
Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) over Ethernet (RFC 2516) This protocol allows the
modem to function as a LAN device and permits multiple computer users on an
Ethernet to share a common DSL connection to the Internet.
CellPipe 20A-USB device drivers
The CellPipe 20A-USB provides three types of device drivers: WAN, LAN, and ATM. All
three drivers support ATM protocol. In addition, the ATM driver is compatible with ATM
services available in recent Windows operating systems. The proper choice of driver
depends on the combination of Windows operating system and protocol.
1.
WAN driver this driver enables the modem to function as a dial-up modem. Calls
are established via the Dial-Up Networking window. This driver supports RFC 2364,
and RFC 2516 with PVC connections and is compatible with Windows 98, Windows
98 SE, Windows 2000, Windows Me, and Windows xp.
Caution: CellPipe 20A-USB device drivers are not compatible with Windows NT
operating systems. Do not load on systems running Windows NT.
2. LAN driver this driver enables the modem to function as a LAN or Ethernet device.
Connection establishment is automatic. This driver supports RFC 1577 and
RFC 1483 with PVC connections. It is compatible with Windows 98, Windows 98 SE,
Windows 2000, Windows Me, and Windows xp.
3. ATM driver this driver is compatible with ATM services provided by Windows and
supports RFC 2364. This ATM driver employs dial-up networking to create a PVC or
SVC connection for a PPP connection. This driver is compatible with
Windows 98 SE, Windows 2000, Windows Me, and Windows xp.
