Measuring spot size - Distance to Spot Ratio (D/S)
In order to obtain precise measuring results, the object to be measured must
be larger than the measuring spot of the IR thermometer. The measured
temperature is the average temperature of the measured area. The smaller the
object to be measured, the shorter the distance to the IR thermometer has to
be. The exact size of the measuring spot is indicated in the following diagram.
Furthermore, it is printed on the device. For precise measurements, the object
to be measured should be at least twice the size of the measuring spot. The
focus of the device is 914 mm.
D/S ratio 50:1
unit: mm
Emission ratio
The emission ratio is a certain value which is used for describing the energy
emission characteristic of a material. The higher this value, the more radiation
a material can emit. This is indicated by means of the emission ratio. To obtain
accurate measuring values for different materials with the IR-1001A, an
emission ratio between 0.10 and 1.0 can be adjusted. Please find enclosed a
list containing the emission values of several materials.
For compensation, the surface of shiny parts can be covered with adhesive
tape or matte black paint. It is not recommended to measure shiny materials or
metallic surfaces directly.
The device cannot measure through transparent surfaces such as e.g. glass. It
will measure the surface temperature of the glass instead.

stabilization to accommodate to the new ambient temperature before use.
Do not expose the device to high temperatures for a longer period of time.
Do not expose it to dusty and humid ambient conditions. Store the device in
the enclosed storing case after use in order to prevent contamination of the
lens.
Laser warning!
Never point the laser either directly or (due to reflecting surfaces)
indirectly at the eyes. Laser radiation might cause irreparable
eye damage. Deactivate the laser beam when measuring near
human beings.

Mode key „Function“ (6)
The IR-1001A measures the following temperature values
during each measuring: maximum (MAX), minimum (Min),
difference (DIF) and average value (AVG). These values are
stored until the next measuring and can be recalled by means
of the mode key (6). The alarm values „High alarm” (HAL),
„Low alarm” (LAL) and emission ratio (EMS) can be set by
means of the mode key. Each time you are pressing the mode
key, the IR-1001A skips to another indicating / setting mode
(see figure). With each measuring, the maximum (MAX),
minimum (Min), difference (DIF) and average values (AVG) of
the old measuring are overwritten and new values are stored.
Setting the alarm values and the emission ratio
Select the value to be set by means of the mode key (6). Set
the desired value by means of the keys „Up" (5) and „Down"
(4).
To activate the alarm function (acoustic) set the sliding switch
„SET ALARM” inside the battery compartment to the right
position (symbols „High” and „Low“ (17) appear on the
display).
Locking function
The IR-1001A can be set to permanent measuring by means of the locking
function. To activate the permanent measuring, set the sliding switch „LOCK
Off/On" inside the battery compartment to „On" and press the measuring key
(8). To deactivate the permanent measuring, set the sliding switch to „Off".
During the permanent measuring, the laser and the background lighting can be
switched on or off by means of the „laser/ backlight" key (7).

Inserting/replacing the batteries
For operation, the IR-1001A requires an
alkaline 9V block battery of the type 006P or
similar types such as IEC6F22 or NEDA1604.
If the voltage of the inserted battery falls below
the required value, the LC display indicates
the low-battery symbol „Low Bat" (14). In this
case, replace the battery.
To replace the battery, proceed as follows:
Open the battery compartment by unfolding
the battery compartment cover from the
handle.
Replace the battery by a new one of the
same type and fold the battery
compartment cover back to the handle.
Do not let batteries lie around openly. There is the risk of
batteries being swallowed by children! Leaking or damaged
batteries might cause acid burns when getting into contact with
skin. Never try to recharge batteries. Do not throw batteries into
fire!

Function
IR thermometers measure the surface temperature of an object. The sensor of
the device analyzes the emitted and reflected heat radiation of the object
measured, and converts this information into a temperature value.
Temperature measurement
To measure temperatures, point the opening of the IR sensor (1) at the object
to be measured and press the key for temperature measuring (8). The LC
display indicates „SCAN" (12). Make sure that the measuring spot is not larger
than the object to be measured. The currently measured temperature value
(20) is indicated on the LC display. To locate the hottest spots of an object, point
the IR-1001A at a spot outside the desired area and scan this area with zigzag
movements by pressing and holding the key for temperature measuring (8) until
the hottest spot is detected.
After releasing the key for temperature measuring (8), the measured
temperature value (20) is indicated for approx. 10 seconds. During this time, the
display indicates „HOLD" (11). After approx. 10 seconds the IR thermometer
switches off automatically in order to save battery capacity. Select the desired
indicating unit (°C/°F) by means of a switch inside the battery compartment.
With the laser switched on, the laser beam indicates approximately the middle
of the measuring spot. This makes it easier to perform precise measurements.
To activate the laser, press the ON/OFF switch (7) with the device being
switched on. The LC display indicates the laser symbol (14). If now you press
the key for temperature measuring (8), the laser beam indicates approximately
the middle of the measuring spot. To deactivate the laser, press the ON/OFF
switch (7) again and the laser symbol (14) disappears.
For measuring in the dark, the background lighting can be activated and
deactivated by means of the key (7). A symbol (15) indicates that the
background lighting is activated.
