Safety warnings
Tampering or technical
modifications will result in
the loss of warranty cover
and exemption from liability.
Do not expose the device to
any major mechanical strain
or strong vibration.
The device must not be ex-
posed to high levels of air
humidity nor must it be al-
lowed to get wet. Outdoors,
the device must only be
used in appropriate weather
conditions or provided with
appropriate protection.
Smoke, dust, steam and/or
other vapours may adverse-
ly affect the HL-Scan's opti-
cal system and lead to in-
correct results being dis-
played.
Before use, please wait until
the device has acclimatised
to ambient temperature.
Switch the device OFF and
prevent it from being
switched ON unintentionally
if it must be assumed that
safe operation cannot be
ensured. e.g. if
- the device shows visible
damage
- the device does not
work or
- the device has be exposed
to adverse conditions for a
prolonged period
- the product has been
exposed to severe strain
in transit.
Designed for use with Steinel hot-air tools,
HL-Scan is a temperature scanner that uses
infrared for measuring temperature on a con-
tactless basis. During use, HL-Scan gives you
an acoustic and visual warning if the tempera-
ture measured exceeds or falls below the tem-
perature selected. HL-Scan is powered by a
9V block battery.
Please familiarise yourself with these operating
instructions before using this product because
prolonged reliable and trouble-free operation
will only be ensured if it is handled properly.

HL-Scan measures an object's surface tem-
perature. The heat radiation reflected from and
passing through the object is detected by the
tool's sensor. This information is then convert-
ed into a temperature reading. Emissivity is a
value used to describe the relative ability of a
material to emit thermal energy by radiation
(characteristic "radiance").
The higher the emissivity, the more capable
the material is of emitting thermal energy. Most
organic materials and surfaces have a emissiv-
ity coefficient of approx. 0.90. Metallic sur-
faces or shiny materials have a lower emissivi-
ty coefficient. HL-Scan's emissivity can be se-
lected so as to rule out imprecise measured
values.
How it works
This device may be used by
children aged 8 or above
and by persons with re-
duced physical, sensory or
mental capabilities or lack of
experience and knowledge if
they are supervised or have
been given instructions on
how to use the tool safely
and understand the hazards
involved. Do not allow chil-
dren to play with the device.
Children are not allowed to
clean or carry out mainte-
nance work on the device
without supervision.
Never look into the LED light
beam and never aim it at
persons or animals.
Safety warnings
GB
- 15 -- 14 -
Make sure the battery is inserted the right way
round. To avoid damage from leakage, remove
the battery if you will not be using the device
for a long period of time. Damaged or leaking
batteries may cause acid burns on contact
with skin. It is recommended to wear protec-
tive gloves. Never recharge non-rechargeable
batteries. Avoid short circuits and contact with
fire as the battery could explode. Batteries
should be kept out of the reach of children.
Change the battery when the display shows a
flashing flat-battery symbol (17).
Changing the battery
1. Unscrew the battery compartment lid and
remove it
2. Detach spent battery from the battery clip
and connect a new battery of the same type
to the battery clip, ensuring correct polarity
3. Insert the battery into the battery compart-
ment. Place the lid on the battery compart-
ment and screw down
Inserting the battery / changing the battery (Fig. )
The device is fitted to the top of the hot air
tool. HL-Scan can be fitted and removed at
any time.
Fitting / Removal (Fig. )
1. Fit HL-Scan onto the hot air tool
2. When switching ON for the first time, the
device is active in the state it was in on
leaving the factory: temperature setting =
150 °C, alarm tolerance level = 5 %,
emissivity = 0.90, LED light beam ON,
audio signal ON.
3. The display shows the temperature setting
and alarm tolerance level for 5 sec., after
then HL-Scan immediately starts to measure
temperature. The actual temperature at the
work point is indicated on the display
.
Operation
The following settings can be made in the
settings menu:

Selectable unit of temperature °C/°F
The selector switch (9) in the battery compart-
ment (3) allows you to change the temperature
unit from °C (degrees Celsius) to °F (degrees
Fahrenheit).
Settings menu (Fig. / Display)
The ideal measurement area is 15 cm from
the hot air tool's delivery outlet and meas-
ures approx. 2 cm in diameter. Reducing /
increasing the distance may cause results
to vary.
To obtain accurate results, the object being
measured must be larger than the measure-
ment area. It is recommended for the object
being measured to be at least twice the size
of the measurement area.
HL-Scan is unable to take measurements
through transparent surfaces, such as glass.
Instead, HL-Scan measures the surface
temperature of the glass.
Refer to "Nozzles" when using nozzles.
The measurement results obtained for shiny
objects may be corrupted and therefore
incorrect.
To obtain accurate results, HL-Scan must
be allowed to reach ambient temperature.
When moving from one location to another,
let HL Scan reach the new ambient temper-
ature.
Prolonged use at high temperatures may
cause HL-Scan to heat up and deliver
incorrect measurement results. To prevent
HL-Scan from heating up after prolonged
use, detach it from the hot air tool after use.
To detach HL-Scan, go to "Fitting/
Removal".

HL-Scan's emissivity can be selected to obtain
accurate measurement readings for different
materials and surfaces (see table). Emissivity is

value most organic materials have.

Surface quality, geometry or other parameters may influence the emissivity of the object being
measured.
The scanner comes with an alarm function that
is activated when the temperature measured
exceeds or falls below the temperature select-
ed. The alarm is given in acoustic form by an
audio signal and in visual form by blue and red
back-lighting. The alarm is triggered when the
temperature measured exceeds or falls below
the temperature that is set.
When back-lighting is green, the temperature
measured by HL-Scan matches the alarm toler-
ance level previously selected. The acoustic
warning signal can be deactivated. To deacti-
vate the audio signal, go to "Settings menu".

Cleaning the lens:
The lens may be cleaned with a damp, soft and
non-linting cloth if it gets dirty (do not use
cleaning agents). Alternatively, lens cleaning
fluid may be used. Never use any acid-based
or alcohol-based solvents or solvents of any
other kind.
Cleaning the enclosure
The enclosure can be cleaned with water or
mild detergent. Never use any abrasive prod-
ucts or solvents.
Care and maintenance
Nozzles (Fig. )
The following nozzles are suitable for use on
the hot air tool with HL-Scan:
• Reduction nozzle: 9 mm, 14 mm
• Surface nozzle: 50 mm, 75 mm
When using the surface nozzles, make sure the
LED light beam is not interrupted. Only use sur-
face nozzles horizontally as shown in Figure .
Please also note that the ideal measurement
area is 15 cm from the hot air tool's delivery
outlet and not from the nozzle.
Serious measurement errors can occur if
nozzles are used other than the ones listed
here.
