IMPORTANT: Overland Storage requires that all NEO

8000 drives be installed or replaced by an Overland

Storage authorized service provider and recommends the

same for NEO 2000/4000 libraries. Improper installation may

result in damage which voids existing warranties.

This document describes how to add a new tape drive or

remove and replace an existing tape drive from an

Overland Storage NEO SERIES library. When adding a

new drive, configuring the cabling is also addressed.

Tape drives are mounted inside individual drive

assemblies that are located at the rear of the library.

These assemblies feature LiveSwap™ technology which

permits a drive to be removed and replaced while the other

drives and library robotics remain active.

WARNING: The GUI touch screen does not completely

shut off library system power. To reduce the risk of

electric shock or damage to equipment, disconnect

power by unplugging the power cords.

CAUTION: With a cover plate or tape drive removed,

there is access to moving parts. DO NOT reach into open

cavities.

Unpacking the Drive

Carefully unpack the drive assembly kit and verify that

you have all the parts:

• Drive assembly

• Remove & Replace/Add-On Instructions

Electrostatic Discharge Information

A discharge of static electricity can damage micro-circuitry

or static-sensitive devices. To help prevent electrostatic

damage, observe the following precautions:

• Transport and store items in static-safe containers.

• Use a wrist strap and properly grounded tools.

• Make sure you are always properly grounded when

touching a static-sensitive component or assembly.

• Keep the work area free of non-conductive materials.

Before installing a new drive, you must remove either the

cover plate where the new drive goes or the old drive that

is being replaced.

Removing a Drive Cover Plate

IMPORTANT: New drives must be installed in sequence

(see Figure 1). For example, when adding a third drive,

insert it into the drive bay three. On the NEO 8000, numbers

are located above the drive bay openings.

1. At the drive opening where you plan to install the new

drive, remove the upper and lower retaining screws of

the blank panel cover plate.

2. Keep the panel cover plate for future use.

3. Proceed to “Installing the Drive Assembly.”

Removing an Existing Drive

1. Unload any cartridges in the drive being removed by

using the application software or the front panel GUI.

2. Prepare the library for removal of the drive.

• If the library is to be Off, power down the library

and remove the power cords. (On the NEO 8000, also

turn off the circuit breakers.)

• If the library is to remain On, deactivate the drive

being removed by selecting:

Menu > Maintenance > Replace Drive >

Deactivate Drive n.

3. Loosen the captive retainer thumbscrews at the top

center and lower left of the drive assembly.

4. Pull the drive assembly handle straight back to remove

while fully supporting the module (see Figure 2).

Some effort is required to overcome the initial

resistance of unplugging the module from the receiver.

1. Locate the proper drive bay for the new drive assembly

and line up the assembly back to the bay.

2. Push the drive assembly slowly into the receiver until it

seats firmly against the backplane of the library (see

Figure 3).

CAUTION: When inserting the drive assembly into

the drive bay, push evenly on both the handle and

bottom portion of the assembly until it is seated. Do

not lift the drive while pushing as damage to the

connector pins can occur causing drive

communication errors.

3. Tighten the two captive retainer thumbscrews to secure

the assembly in the library.

When adding a new drive, the NEO SERIES library

cabling configuration must also be updated to support that

drive. The following figures some common cabling

configurations for both Fibre Channel (FC) and SCSI

drives. Refer to the appropriate NEO SERIES user guide

for more information.

Fibre Channel Cabling

With a Fibre Channel Options (FCO) card installed, a

NEO SERIES library can support a FC Storage Area

Network (SAN).

When you add a FC drive assembly to a native FC library

configuration, the only change you need to do is add a new

Fibre connection directly to the drive assembly FC socket

(see Figure 4).

SCSI Cabling

The NEO SERIES libraries are equipped with SCSI

connections permanently mounted beneath each drive bay.

Use these connections to hook up the new drive following

standard SCSI wiring protocols (see Figure 5).

Other, more sophisticated, configurations can also be used.

For example, SCSI drives can be connected to a FC SAN

via the FCO card by using different SCSI ports for the

different drive buses (see Figure 6).

Once the drive is installed, and you have made any

necessary cabling updates, the new drive needs to be

activated for the library to recognize it.

• If the power was on during this procedure, activate the

drive by selecting of the appropriate method:

• If Auto Activate is Off, select Menu > Maintenance

> Replace Drive > Activate Drive n.

• If Auto Activate is On, the drive is automatically

activated.

• If the power was off during this procedure, replace the

power cords (and close the NEO 8000 circuit breakers).

Turn on the library. The drive activates during the

initialization of the library.

The LED on the rear of the new drive flashes green and

then turns solid green when the drive is fully initialized. If

you get an amber light, there is a problem with the drive.

The sections below address the primary items that need to

be configured for newly installed drives. Refer to the

appropriate NEO SERIES user guide for details.

Firmware Check

CAUTION: If your NEO SERIES library firmware version is

less than the version listed for the particular models in

Table 1, it must be upgraded to support Fibre Channel

drives. See the Overland Storage Technical Support

website for the latest versions of the firmware.

Hot Swap PWA Check for LTO-4

CAUTION: To maximize the transfer rate of the LTO-4

drives in a NEO 2000 or NEO 4000 library, the Hot Swap

PWA card must be an Ultra320 card.

To determine if the Hot Swap card in your NEO 2000 or

NEO 4000 library must be updated to support LTO-4

drives, follow these steps:

1. Download and install version 6.02 firmware.

2. Launch WebTLC.

3. Select History > Display a Library Trace Log >

Library Special Trace > Display Trace.

4. At the end of the trace, in the SPI Hardware Versions

Area, review at the Drive information.

• If the phrase “Ultra320 capable” is shown, your

library supports the LTO-4 drives.

• Otherwise, you must upgrade the Hot Swap board.

Configuring Fibre Channel Drives

NOTE:

In most cases, you can use the

default configuration

values

for the native fibre channel drives.

1. To view the fibre channel drive configuration, from the

default GUI screen select Menu > SCSI/FC (Edit

Options).

The SCSI Option screen is displayed (Figure 7).

2. Locate the drive that has been installed or changed and

press Set Values to show Edit Drive screen.

3. Change values as necessary for the FC drive. Move

between the two edit screens using the T and S

buttons at the bottom of the screens.

Configuring SCSI Drives

Each SCSI drive assembly installed in the library requires

a unique SCSI ID. This information details how to set or

change a SCSI ID using the NEO SERIES GUI touch

screen.

1. To view the SCSI drive configuration, from the default

GUI screen select Menu > SCSI/FC (Edit Options).

The SCSI Option screen is displayed (Figure 9).

2. Locate the drive that has just been installed and verify

the SCSI ID displayed on the button to the right of the

Drive n Bus ID label (where n is the drive number).

3. If the number needs to be changed, touch the button to

display the Keypad screen.

4. Enter a new number for the SCSI ID and touch Save.
