Watts 082 is a 10 kΩ temperature sensor designed to be strapped onto a pipe, and which can be used with select Watts Radiant control sensor inputs. It is most commonly used to monitor supply and return water temperatures. It has a brass sleeve for fast response, a wide operating range, an indent to allow pipe strap-on installation, and 8 ft (2.4 m) of 2-conductor wire.

TheUniversalSensor082isa0kΩtemperaturesensordesignedtobestrapped
ontoapipe.ItcanbeusedwithselectWattsRadiantcontrolsensorinputs,butis
mostcommonlyusedtomonitorsupplyandreturnwatertemperatures.Thisproduct
hasabrasssleeveforfastresponse,awideoperatingrange,anindenttoallow
pipestraponinstallation,and8ft(2.4m)of2-conductorwire.
Mounting the Sensor
TheUniversalSensorcanbestrappeddirectlytothepipeusingthe
cabletieprovided.Insulationshouldbeplacedaroundthesensorto
reducetheeffectofaircurrentsonthesensormeasurement.
TheUniversalSensorshouldbeplaceddownstreamofapumpor
afteranelboworsimilarfitting.Thisisespeciallyimportantiflarge
diameterpipesareusedasthethermalstratificationwithinthepipe
canresultinerroneoussensorreadings.Propersensorlocation
requiresthatthefluidisthoroughlymixedwithinthepipebeforeit
reachesthesensor.

Wiring & Testing the Sensor
Donotrunsensorwiresparalleltotelephoneorpowercables.Ifthesensorwires
arelocatedinanareawithstrongsourcesofelectromagneticinterference,shielded
cableortwistedpairshouldbeusedorthewirescanberuninagroundedmetal
conduit.Ifusingshieldedcable,theshieldwireshouldbeconnectedtotheCom
orComSenterminalonthecontrolandnottoearthground.
Ifthesuppliedwireisnotlongenoughtomakeaconnectiontothecontrol,8AWG
orsimilarwirecanbeconnectedwithappropriatelysizedwiringconnectors.
Followthesensortestinginstructioninthisbrochure.
Connectthetwowiresfromthe082tothesensorandcommonterminalsonthe
control.
Sensor Testing Instructions
Agoodqualitytestmetercapableofmeasuringupto5,000kΩ(kΩ=000Ω)is
requiredtomeasurethesensorresistance.Inadditiontothis,theactualtemperature
mustbemeasuredwitheitheragoodqualitydigitalthermometer,orifathermometer
isnotavailable,asecondsensorcanbeplacedalongsidetheonetobetestedand
thereadingscompared.
Firstmeasurethetemperatureusingthethermometerandthenmeasuretheresistance
ofthesensoratthecontrol.Thewiresfromthesensormustnotbeconnectedto
thecontrolwhilethetestisperformed.UsingtheTemperaturevs.ResistanceTable,
estimatethetemperaturemeasuredbythesensor.Thesensorandthermometer
readingsshouldbeclose.Ifthetestmeterreadsaveryhighresistance,theremay
beabrokenwire,apoorwiringconnectionoradefectivesensor.Iftheresistance
isverylow,thewiringmaybeshorted,theremaybemoistureinthesensororthe
sensormaybedefective.Totestforadefectivesensor,measuretheresistance
directlyatthesensorlocation.

WattsRadiant(theCompany)warrantsitshydronicsystemelectroniccontrolsandthermostats(theProduct)tobe
freefromdefectsinmaterialsandworkmanshipundernormalusageforaperiodofoneyearfromthedocumented
dateofinstallationoftheProduct.Intheeventofdefectswithinthewarrantyperiod,theCompanywillreplace
theProductwithoutcharge.Thisremedyisthesoleandexclusiveremedyforbreachofwarranty.Thiswarranty
istransferabletosubsequentowners.
UnderthisLimitedWarranty,theCompanywillprovidethefollowing:
Inordertomakeaclaim,youmust:
(a)ProvidetheCompanywithsufficientdetailsrelatingtothenatureofthedefect,theinstallation,thehistoryof
operation,andanyrepairsthatmayhavebeenmade.
(b)AttheCompany’sdiscretionandattheowner’sexpense,shiptheProducttotheCompanyortheCompany’s
localrepresentativeordistributor.
(c) ProvideproofthattheProductwasinstalledinaccordancewiththeapplicableProductInstallationManualand
anyspecialwrittendesignorinstallationguidelinesbytheCompanyforthisproject.
(d)ProvideproofthattheProductwasinstalledinaccordancewiththeNationalElectricalCode(NEC)orthe
CanadianElectricalCode(CEC),andallapplicablelocalbuildingandelectricalcodes.
(e) Providearetailsalesreceiptorproofofpurchase.
ThefollowingarenotcoveredbythisLimitedWarranty:
(a)Anyincidentalorconsequentialdamage,includinginconvenience,lossoftimeorlossofincome.
(b)
AnylaborormaterialsrequiredtorepairorreplacetheProductthatarenotauthorizedinwritingbytheCompany.
(c) Anylaborormaterialsrequiredtoremove,repairorreplacematerialsotherthantheProducts.
