General Description
The GS6042 evaluation package is designed to accelerate the evaluation process of the
GS6042 Adaptive Cable Equalizer.
It is strongly recommended to read the GS6042 Data Sheet (Doc ID: PDS-060055) before
using this evaluation kit.

Overview
The purpose of the EB-GS6042 Evaluation Board is to evaluate the GS6042
6G UHD-SDI/3G/HD/SD Adaptive Cable Equalizer. This device is designed to support
SMPTE ST 424, SMPTE ST 292 and SMPTE ST 259 serial digital video signals standards,
and it is optimized for performance at 270Mb/s, 1.485Gb/s, 2.97Gb/s, and 5.94Gb/s data
rates.

Figure 1-1 shows the inputs, outputs and power connections for the EB-GS6042.

1.1 SDI Inputs and Outputs
The GS6042 is a high-speed BiCMOS integrated circuit designed to equalize and restore
signals received over 75Ω coaxial cable. The EB-GS6042 is the evaluation board for the
GS6042. The EB-GS6042 features one 75Ω single-ended input through a BNC connector
(SDI/J1), and one pair of 100Ω differential outputs (DDO/J2, DDO
/J3) through SMA
connectors.
1.2 Power
The EB-GS6042 features four power posts (5V, 3V3, GND, VCCO). By default, the GS6042
can be powered with a single power supply connected to 5V. Alternatively, the GS6042
outputs can be powered using a second power supply connected to VCCO. The power
configuration jumper VCCO_SEL must be configured accordingly. Refer to the GS6042
Data Sheet (Doc ID: PDS-060055), section 4.3, for more information.

When the outputs are powered separately, the voltage supplied to VCCO can be set
between 1.2V and 3.3V.
To bypass the on-board regulator and supply 3V3 directly to the GS6042 via TP4, R21
needs to be removed.
Note: Do not apply 5V (TP2) and 3V3 (TP4) at the same time.
1.3 Switch Settings
A three-point dip switch (SW1) provides the GS6042’s input selection. The switch
positions are marked on the silkscreen, and are described in Table 1-1 below:
By default the SLEEP switch is not enabled, and Auto-Sleep is enabled. In Auto-Sleep
mode, if no signal is detected the GS6042 enters sleep mode. To enable the SLEEP
switch, remove resistor R18 and populate resistor R19.
1.4 Jumper Settings
The jumpers on the EB-GS6042 board are described in the following tables:

1.4.1 OP_CTL Settings
The output control settings are described in Table 1-3 below. Refer to the GS6042 Data
Sheet (Doc ID: PDS-060055), section 4.7, for more information.
1.4.2 Squelch Adjust (SQ_ADJ) Configuration
The SQ_ADJ can be adjusted by connecting an external adjustable 0V – 3.3V power
supply to TP1. This input adjusts the threshold of the CD
pin. When the SQ_ADJ input is
0V, all cable lengths will be equalized. When the SQ_ADJ input is 3.3V, there will be no
equalization regardless of the cable length. Please refer to the GS6042 Data Sheet for
more details on carrier detect and squelch adjust.
1.5 LED Indicator
D1 is the Carrier Detect LED for the GS6042. D1 is on when a carrier is detected and stays
off otherwise.
