The VML track and trace system for volume measurement is
ideal for these applications: light grids detect the length, width,
height and rotation angle of an object. The obtained proles
are used for immediate calculation of the object dimensions
and position determination. The surface properties do not
aect performance because the VML reliably measures even
semi-transparent and lm-wrapped objects and determines the
smallest enveloping box.
This leads to increased eciency in the downstream packaging
and stock placement process and simplies invoicing for cer-
tied systems. The determined rotation angle allows dynamic
handling by downstream robot systems. The modular design of
the VML system makes it compatible with other SICK solutions
and allows it to be easily adapted to individual tasks.
Reliable object detection is essential whenever automated systems are used for object transport. In the
courier, express, parcel and postal (CEP) markets in particular, the daily challenge is to deliver punctually
and completely. The prerequisite for this is optimum utilization of warehouse and transport capacities.

VML DIMENSIONING WITH PERSPECTIVE
VML Prime
The standard version reliably and accurately determines the smallest enveloping
box irrespective of surface properties and object shape. The cost-ecient VML
Prime 2D Horizontal/Vertical system variant is suitable for applications that require
either proles based on width, length and rotation angle or height-length proles for
downstream processes.

The certiable system is particularly suitable for use in the revenue recovery area.
It determines the exact data for invoicing cubic and irregular objects with very small
object gaps.

an accuracy of 2 mm. Cuboid objects can be measured with very small object gaps.

The VML track and trace system convinces with a modular design, a robust steel frame and the option of exible component
integration. This allows the system to be adapted to the requirements of a standardized range of applications and guarantees
optimum results. SICK has developed three system variants for this purpose:

DIMENSIONING WITH PERSPECTIVE VML
VML IN OPERATION
The VML track and trace system measures objects completely independently of their surface properties and is therefore suitable
for a wide range of applications in the area of object dimensioning and position determination. It meets specic requirements for
industrial use, e.g. with respect to ambient light immunity and protection classes, and is also available with dierent connection
and protocol variants. The VML system enables ecient packaging, storage and transport of objects across industries:
Certied dimensioning
If the objects have already been
declared, a data comparison can be
performed on the basis of the measured
values and any deviations subsequently
invoiced. In addition, determination of
the dimensional weight of objects before
shipping allows invoicing on the basis of
the collected data.
TLA (Tire Lector Array) with
integrated spotting enables robot
handling
In order to read the bar code on the
inner side of a tire it was previously
necessary to stop the conveyor belt and
rotate the tire. The VML Prime system
in combination with a Tire Lector Array
(TLA) now species the position of the
bar code together with a rotation angle
and therefore allows more dynamic
interaction with the downstream robot
systems as well as detection without
stopping the conveyor.
Reliable dimensioning for
ecient production of secondary
packaging
Determination of the exact dimensions
of products that are to be shipped
provides the basis for shipment-spe-
cic, volume-optimized packaging. The
light grid-based VML system measures
objects accurately irrespective of their
surface properties and forwards the
measurement results to the packaging
machine.
Volume measurement for master
data collection
The VML track and trace system is based
on a light grid frame in conjunction with
evaluation logic. It provides the basis for
an ecient logistics process – from mas-
ter data collection and size-optimized
stock placement through to automated
palletizing of transport units. Identica-
tion systems and weighing technology
make it possible to extend the range of
applications.
Size measurement for protection
of X-ray equipment
The VML system measures conveyed
ight baggage and reliably determines
bag dimensions. This protects the
sensitive X-ray machines of the bag-
gage handling system from damage, for
example, and optimizes automated ight
make-up.

The VML track and trace system (a
light grid-based volume measurement
system) is your position determination
and object measurement solution for
challenging applications. Based on
light grids, the VML enables accurate
determination of the smallest envelop-
ing box of objects, irrespective of their
surface properties. This makes it a
reliable solution for measuring trans-
parent objects and objects wrapped
in lm. The measurement data can be
used for calculating object dimensions
and, depending on the system variant,
for billing purposes. The modular design
of the VML makes it compatible with
other SICK solutions and allows it to be
enhanced. This enables individual adap-
tation to specic applications.
