Safety and punctuality are very important in rail transport. To ensure that transport goods can pass
along the rail network and at train crossings without colliding, rail operators must be able to recognize
critical situations quickly and act in good time if necessary. This is exactly the right eld of application
for the Railway Proling System from SICK: It measures trains three-dimensionally during travel and
alerts rail operators immediately if protruding cargo or train components violate the reference prole
permitted for the respective line.

Reference prole: Denes the maximum perimeter prole of the trains. Included in the reference prole are the movements of the trains in horizontal and vertical direction during the journey,
for example in curves. This ensures that the trains do not touch the structure gauge, thus ensuring collision-free rail trafc.
User-oriented data processing
Using the 3D point cloud generated from the measurement data, rail operators can distinguish violations
of reference proles according to their severity and, for example, inspect critical train components before
initiating an unplanned train stop
Traceable allocation of costs for unplanned train stops thanks to the generated output data in the form of
3D models, 2D cross-sections and camera images
The detailed survey of train dimensions provides an optimal basis for dening the ideal structure gauge
when planning and dimensioning railroad lines

Product description
The Railway Proling System performs
three-dimensional measurement of
trains during travel and identies pro-
truding loads or train components which
violate the permitted reference proles.
The trains are scanned 200 times a
second using eye-safe 2D LiDAR sen-
sors. Based on the generated 3D model,
reference prole violations are detected
and alarms are sent to the operator. The
intuitive user interface supports detailed
analysis of the visualized critical areas
of the train prole as well as creation of
appropriate measures.
