Safety Notations
This manual uses safety alert words at points in the documentation where the user should be aware of potential
hazards. The safety alert words indicate differing levels of observation or action as described below:
NOTE
A NOTE is intended to provide emphasis on procedures that may be misinterpreted or overlooked, or to
clarify confusing situations.
CAUTION
A CAUTION is intended to provide essential information and to emphasize procedures that, if not correctly
followed, may result in improper instrument operation and/or instrument damage.
WARNING
A WARNING is intended to emphasize dangerous or hazardous conditions that may result in personal
injury to the user and/or damage or destruction of the instrument.
HOT
Surrounding surfaces are hot to the touch. To prevent the possibility of serious burns, use personal
protective equipment (PPE) as outlined in the user’s safety program. Metal tongs are recommended for
inserting and removing sample containers from the furnace.
6Introduction
Introduction
About the Instrument
The Phoenix BLACK™ and Phoenix BLACK AirWave™ microwave mufe furnace is a special purpose microwave
system designed for laboratory use in heating/ashing a wide range of materials. Its primary purpose is the rapid
oxidation of samples for the gravimetric determination of ash content (loss on ignition).
The Phoenix BLACK and Phoenix BLACK AirWave can be equipped with either a high temperature furnace or a high
capacity furnace. The high temperature furnace is for applications requiring temperatures up to 1200 ºC. It can
accommodate up to eight (8) CEM quartz ber crucibles. The high capacity furnace is for applications at or below
1000 ºC. It can accommodate up to fteen (15) CEM quartz ber crucibles.
This manual refers to Phoenix BLACK software version 1.10 for all software information, including screenshots and
technical information. Phoenix BLACK software version 1.10 or newer is required for operation.
Read and understand all documentation provided by the balance manufacturer, Mettler Toledo, before connecting
to or operating the balance.
Read and fully understand all documentation before operating the instrument.
Optional Configurations
The Phoenix BLACK AirWave channels volatile material from the ashing furnace chamber through a chimney in the
top of the ashing furnace chamber to the Air Amplied Exhaust System that contains no screens or moving parts.
Volatile material from the ashing furnace chamber escape through the chimney and into the exhaust system.
Residue collection on the outside of the ashing furnace and in the exhaust system is reduced to a manageable
level.
The Phoenix BLACK vapor scrubbing system can safely remove harmful fumes from the furnace cavity and
neutralize any residual acid exhausted (sulfur dioxide and nitric acid). The conguration meets ISO 14000
regulations and all requirements for USP 281 (ROI) & USP 733 (LOI). The quartz furnace ceiling assures sample
purity. USB data output provides CFR 21 part 11 compliance for output of data and any regulation specifying an
electrically heated mufe furnace, method details and date of completion.
Some specialty applications, such as carbon black quantication, require the ashing process to be completed in
the absence of oxygen. The Nitrogen Purge Option allows the mufe furnace insert to be lled with inert gas during
the ashing process.
Intended Use
WARNING
If the instrument is used in a manner not specied by CEM Corporation in this manual, then the protection
provided by the equipment may be impaired.
• The Phoenix BLACK and Phoenix BLACK Airwave have been designed and tested laboratory use in heating/ashing

System Installation
Unpack Instrument
1. View the “System Specication” section of this manual and select a location that meets requirements before
installing the instrument.
2. Carefully inspect the shipping carton, the instrument and accessories for any damage that may have occurred
during shipping. If the instrument or accessories have damage, contact the freight carrier to report the damage
and le a damage report. Contact your CEM representative to request service information.
WARNING
If any damage to the instrument is noted, do not attempt instrument operation.
Do not tamper with the instrument.
3. Pull plastic tab, swing handle open and remove the plastic assembly from box. Repeat process on the remain-
ing handles.
1
2
4. Use top handles to pull up and remove outer box.
5. Carefully cut the tape on both sides of the inner box and lay the sides of the box at.
18 System Installation
6. Remove the foam from the instrument.
7. Leaving the plastic behind, use two people to lift the system, using the cutouts in the foam as hand place-
ment, and place onto the bench top.
WARNING
To avoid muscle strain or back injury, use lifting aids and proper lifting techniques when removing or
replacing.
19
System Installation
8. Carefully remove the plastic securing the door and discard. Do not leave the plastic on or under the system.
9. Retain all packing material for use if returning the instrument to the manufacturer.
System Setup
1. For Phoenix BLACK AirWave (ONLY): Install the airow amplier assembly as outlined below.
1.1. Using the two screws provided, install the mounting bracket on the back of the instrument cover.
1.2. Place the connector collar of the assembly on the exhaust outlet of the instrument and attach it with
the provided screws.
20 System Installation
1.3. Connect the solenoid wiring to the solenoid connector.
1.4. Connect the exhaust elbow to the airow amplier exhaust outlet and tighten the screw to secure the
elbow.
1.5. Connect the exhaust hose to the exhaust elbow and tighten the hose clamp securely. Place the open
end of the exhaust hose in a fume disposal mechanism.
1.6. Using an “M” style 1/4" quick disconnect socket hose coupling, connect a compressed air line to the
plug coupling of the airow amplier assembly. Maximum air pressure is 150 psi.
CAUTION
Air ow to the system must be on at all times during operation. The airow solenoid will automatically turn
air on when the “Start” key is pressed and temperature is great than 100 ºC. Air will automatically turn off
when the system is below 100 °C.
1.7. If necessary, unlock and adjust the pressure gauge (large black knob directly above the gauge) clock-
wise to raise the pressure or counterclockwise to decrease the pressure.
1.8. Lock the pressure gauge at 60 psi.
2. Standard Phoenix BLACK (ONLY): Connect the exhaust tubing to the exhaust output located on the back of the
system.
