The SMART 6tm is a quantum leap forward in moisture and solids analysis. The SMART 6
utilizes iPower® and iDritm technologies to rapidly determine the moisture/solids content for
any sample, regardless of moisture content.

3. Remove the foam packaging material from the top of the instrument.
4. Using two (2) people, carefully lift the instrument from the shipping container, using the handholds in the foam to
securely hold the unit.
5. Place the SMART 6 in the designated area on a workbench or laboratory table that:
a. provides at least 8 in. (20 cm) open space on each side, 6 in. (15 cm) open space in the rear of the instrument for
ventilation, and an overhead clearance of 24 in. (61 cm).
b. is free from vibration of large equipment and/or excessive walk-through traffic.
Note: The SMART 6 is designed to handle small amounts of high frequency vibration, but for concerns, contact CEM
Corporation for potential solutions prior to continuing with the installation process.
c. provides a temperature range of 41 °F (5 °C) to 104 °F (40 °C) and a humidity range of 10 85 percent relative
humidity.
d. provides adequate bench space for sample handling.
e. allows the instrument to be connected to a dedicated, grounded 120 or 240 VAC outlet. The SMART 6 should
always be operated on a stabilized, constant VAC power supply within ± 10% of the specified level.

6. After removing the shrink wrap from the unit, gently lift the dark gray cavity handle to lift the cover from the instrument
base.
7. Install the balance pan to the balance stem and carefully install the balance stem into the instrument cavity with the
top of the stem flush with the cavity floor.
Insert Pan into Stem
Insert Assembly into Balance
8. Close the instrument cover.
9. Position the SMART 6 to provide access to the back of the instrument.
10. Plug the power cord into the SMART 6 and the dedicated electrical receptacle. Connect any cables required for an
external balance or transmitting data to a LIMS network or other external database. (Directions to properly transmit
data is addressed in the Operation Manual.)
Note: If a DC Isolator option is to be utilized, remove it from its packaging and follow the instructions included with the
option to connect it to the SMART 6.
11. Reposition the instrument on the workbench facing forward. Find the power switch located on the right side of the
instrument, turn it to the ON position.
Note: CEM Corporation recommends that the power cord be connected to a dedicated AC power outlet and that the
power switch remains in the ON position at all times. After 15 minutes of idle time, the SMART 6 assumes a power-
saving “sleep” mode.
12. Once the SMART 6 completes the initial power-up, the
instrument Home Screen (seen to the right) will be
displayed.
13. Select the System Menu icon in the bottom right corner of
the screen.
14. Select Users.
15. “Auto Login” can be toggled on and off. Having Auto Login
turned on will require the user to choose and log into a user
account every time the system is turned on.
16. Select Add User.
17. Select Name. Using the keypad, enter the desired user
name, using a maximum of 16 characters. Press the Hide
Keypad icon on the bottom right of the keypad to return to
the Add User screen.
18. Select Administrator. Administrator can be toggled on or
off. If toggled on, the user has full Administrator access, and
is able to create and edit methods, and make system setting
changes. If toggled off, the user only has Basic access,
which is only capable of choosing different methods and
running samples. While there may be multiple Administrator
and Basic users, every system must maintain at least one
Administrator.
Note: Security requires the entry of a password to prevent unauthorized entry of programs into the instrument or
unauthorized alteration of program parameters. Once a password is entered and activated, new programs cannot be
entered and program parameters cannot be altered without entry of the proper password.
19. Select Password to enter a password for the user.
20. Using the keypad, enter the desired password. Once the
password is entered, confirm the password. Then select the
Hide Keypad icon to return to the Add User screen.
CAUTION
To avoid being unable to enter new programs or alter program parameters, ensure that any activated password is
recorded or documented for retrieval.
21. Select Save to save all user information in the instrument
software.
22. The software will indicate that an additional user has been
entered into the database. Select Close.
23. After creating the initial user, follow the steps 4-10 to enter
any additional users who will operate the instrument.
24. Select the Home key to return to the Home Screen.
25. Once at the Home Screen, press the System Menu icon,
and then press Logout.
26. Once at the user login screen, press the name of the user
you wish to login as, and then enter the correct password.
27. Select the System Menu icon in the bottom right corner of
the screen to open the Menu screen.
28. Select Settings.
29. Select Localization.
30. If English is not the preferred language, select Language to
scroll through the available system languages.
31. Select Date Format to enter the desired format for
displaying the date (MM/DD/YYYY, DD/MM/YYYY or
YYYY/MM/DD).
32. Select Time Format to enter the desired format for
displaying the time (12 Hour or 24 Hour).
33. Next choose the Date/Time tab, and set the correct Date
and Time.
34. Select the Back icon to return to the Home Screen.
35. Select the System Menu icon in the bottom right corner of
the screen to open the Menu screen.
36. Select Video, and watch the videos labelled “SMART 6
Intro” and “How to Run a Sample”
37. After reviewing the process for running a sample, run the monitor solution provided with the SMART 6, following the
Monitor Testing instructions provided in the accessory kit to ensure the SMART 6 is performing within proper
specification.
38. Once the SMART 6 has been validated, and all users are
familiar with the system, ensure that all of the methods
required for full testing are on the SMART 6. The SMART 6
already contains methods that cover a range of basic
products. Choose the One Touch tab to access these
methods.
a. If your sample results do not match or run
properly under these methods, visit
www.cem.com/smart_6/resource-library.html
and log in (see instructions below) for a full
library of optimized One Touch Methods
b. If your sample does not work with any methods
from this library, please either contact the CEM
Process Applications group, or follow the
instructions in the Operation Manual for
developing and optimizing your own methods.
39. Once the correct methods are located, they can be
downloaded to a USB stick, which will then be plugged into
the USB port on the side of the unit and imported into the
SMART 6. To import, choose either the One Touch or
Classic library, and choose the Import icon on the top of the
screen.
40. After importing and validating all methods and sample types, the SMART 6 is ready for analysis.
41. Please register your system by going to www.cem.com and selecting “ACCOUNT” from the top right corner.
Registration gives you access to download One Touch Methods, software updates, method notes, replacement part
lists for your system, and more.
a. For new logins, select “Signup” from the menu and follow the instructions. Name, contact information, and
unit serial numbers are required for a new login.
b. For existing logins, login and update your profile with your new serial number to gain access to owner
content
42. Once your product is registered, please allow up to 24 hours for your settings to update. To find your owner
resources, click on the resource library tab of your product.
