ETAS ES585.1 is a K-Line Interface Compact designed to connect a PC to an ECU. The ES585.1 is connected to the ECU via the K-Line and to the PC via the parallel printer interface. This makes a powerful and universal connection to the PC possible. PC-aided calibration can be carried out at the serial diagnostic interface (K-Line) of an ECU with the intelligent ECU interface ES585.1. The functionality of the ES585.1 is basically determined by the operating programs of the PC.

Introduction 5
1 Introduction
The ES585.1 K-Line Interface Compact is an ETAS Compact Module for con-
necting a PC to an ECU. The ES585.1 is connected to the ECU via the K-Line
and to the PC via the parallel printer interface. This makes a powerful and
universal connection to the PC possible.
PC-aided calibration can be carried out at the serial diagnostic interface (K-
Line) of an ECU with the intelligent ECU interface ES585.1. The functionality of
the ES585.1 is basically determined by the operating programs of the PC. This
also makes it perfect for all functions to do with operating the diagnostic ser-
vices of an ECU, such as reading the fault memory or programming ECUs with
flash memory.
1.1 Functions/Features
Powerful interface for K-Line
In acc. with ISO 9141-2 for diagnostic testers
Transfer rate: up to 250 kBaud
Protocols: McMess, KWP2000, Keyword71
Inputs and outputs to the PC galvanically isolated
Power is supplied via the connection to the ECU from the onboard
power supply with galvanic isolation
1.2 Applications
The ES585.1 can be used in the following calibration tasks,
if the ECU provides the functions:

2.3.2 ECU Interface
The connecting cable is attached to the ECU on the side of the device. The
signals of the K-Line but also the power supply is routed from the ECU to the
ES585.1 via this connection.
2.3.3 Analog Output
The K-Line also contains an analog output with which the P-Module can be
driven. The P-Module provides a programming voltage for flash EPROMs.
2.3.4 Display Element
There is a display element (LED) on the back of the ES585.1 which indicates the
operating states of the ES585.1.
The following table lists what this LED indicates.
The ES585.1 is operable after an automatic power-on of the ES585.1 (see the
section 2.5 on page 8).
2.4 Power Supply
The ES585.1 is powered galvanically isolated via KL15 (terminal 15) or UBD
(continuous plus) of the ECU.
The input voltage range is 6 to 30 Volts.
2.5 Automatic Power-On
The ES585.1 is only supplied with voltage when
the ES585.1 is connected correctly to the Centronics interface,
the PC is switched on and
the supply voltage is connected via KL15 or UBatt.

3.1 PC Printer Interface (Centronics)
The ES585.1 is connected directly to the printer interface (Centronics) of the
PC. This makes a powerful and universal connection to the PC possible.
3.2 ECU Interface (K-Line)
The ES585.1 is connected to the ECU directly via the 14-pin round connector.
There are also extension cables available in various lengths as well as cable
adapters (see chapter 6 on page 17). The connection must not be longer than
10 m.
3.3 Firmware Update
The firmware of the ES585.1 can be updated by the user from the connected
PC using a service software. The program HSP is required for the firmware
update of the ES585.1.

Functional Description 11
4 Functional Description
The ES585.1 can be used for PC-aided calibration at the serial diagnostic inter-
face of an ECU.
The ES585.1 is an intelligent interface which makes it possible to connect ECUs
and a PC. The ES585.1 exchanges data automatically with the ECU thus par-
ticularly relieving the PC of time-critical protocol tasks ensuring the high trans-
fer rates used by ECUs in calibration.
4.1 ECU Interface (K-Line)
The K-Line (serial ECU diagnostic interface) is the interface to the ECU. The
interface connection of the ES585.1 adheres to the ISO 9141-2 standard for
diagnostic testers (without L-Line) with a maximum transfer rate of 250 kBaud.
Communication on the interface takes place with the calibration and diagnos-
tic protocols McMess, Keyword71 and KWP2000. The baud rate and the sys-
tem frequency are set by a program on the PC.
The functionality of the K-Line interface of the ES585.1 is basically determined
by the operating programs of the PC.
4.2 PC Printer Interface (Centronics)
The physical transfer of the data takes place at the PC printer interface (Cen-
tronics)
from the PC to the ES585.1 in Byte mode via the data lines of the Cen-
tronics interface and
from the ES585.1 to the PC in Nibble mode via several control lines of
the Centronics interface.
Communication on the interface takes place in accordance with the INCA pro-
tocol.
