SteamerGard™ Models WT-200 and WT-400
INSTALLATION SPECIFICATIONS
IMPORTANT NOTE: The SteamerGard™ system is designed to provide purified water for use in the
steam generator (boiler) of the steamer only. A separate tap water supply line is required for the
condenser system of the steamer. It is the responsibility of the steamer owner or the installer to provide
two separate water connections; one for purified water to the steam generator and a separate one for tap
water to the condenser system.
SteamerGard™ Components:
THE STEAMERGARD™ UNIT is the heart of the system. It converts available tap water into chemically adjusted and
purified water using a combination of modem water treatment technologies. The SteamerGard™ unit is designed to set
on the floor or a sturdy shelf (100 Ib. cap min.). The SteamerGard™ unit should be positioned to provide easy access
for future fitter changes and servicing, along with access to a cold water supply (preferably softened), an open drain, and
a 115 VAC electrical outlet. The SteamerGard™ unit is equipped with one 1/2" compression fitting to connect to the
feed water supply and two 3/8" compression fittings to connect to the drain and storage tank. 1/2'' and 3/8"-OD
polybutylene tubing is recommended for plumbing. The SteamerGard™ unit plugs into a standard 115 VAC electrical
outlet.
THE STORAGE TANK is a self-contained unit, and requires no power. It provides storage and pressure of purified
water for use in the steamer. The storage tank should be set on the floor anywhere between the SteamerGard™ unit and
the steamer- The storage tank is fitted with a 1" shut-off valve and a 3/8" tee, tor connection to the SteamerGard™ unit
and the steamer. 3/8" OD polybutylene tubing is recommended for plumbing. Important. Storage tank air precharge
should be 12 psi with no water.
THE CONTROL PANEL is designed to give the operator important information about the status and performance of
the SteamerGard™ system, as well as to provide a manual system bypass to revert the steamer to tap water operation
should overuse or failure cause the storage tank to become depleted. The control panel is designed to be wall mounted in
a convenient and accessible location in the vicinity of the steamer and with access to a cold tap water supply. It uses a
standard 9 volt battery to power the WATER QUALITY MONITOR , so no special wiring is required. It is equipped
with three 3/8" compression fittings for connection to the storage tank- the steam generator and a tap water supply.
3/8"OD polybutylene tubing is recommended for plumbing.
Plumbing
The SteamerGard™ system is designed for operation with cold water (40°F - 80°F), at pressures of 25-80 psi,
containing less than 1500 ppm (mg/l) of TDS. The SteamerGard™ system is designed to be plumbed with 3/8" and
1/2" OD polybutylene tubing. 3/8" and 1/2" plastic ferrules (sleeves) are supplied with the system and must be used
when plumbing polybutylene tubing to brass compression fittings. (Note: The tapered end of the plastic ferrule fits into
the fitting body.) if copper tubing must be used for the feed water supply lines, be sure to use brass ferrules (sleeves).
All manual water valves used in the SteamerGard™ system are open when the handle is parallel to the valve body, and
are closed when the handle is perpendicular to the valve body- 3/8" OD and 1/2" OD polybutylene installation tubing is
available from The Water Factory.
Electrical
A 115 VAC electrical outlet is required as a power source for the SteamerGard™ unit. A standard 9 volt battery,
located behind the remotely mounted control panel, is used to power the Water Quality Monitor.

WARNING: Reduced performance or failure of the SteamerGard™ system due to improper
installation, improper maintenance, or improperly treated teed water is not covered under the
manufacturers limited warranty- Specifically, use of the SteamerGard™ system with water
supplies exceeding 80°F, 80 psi, 20 grains of hardness, or 1500 ppm (mg/l) of TDS will void
the manufacturers warranty.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. Locate the SteamerGard™ Model WT 200 or 400 on a floor or shelf (100 Ib. cap. min.), in a dry area,
with adequate ventilation and with access to a cold water supply (preferably softened, less than 20
grains), a drain, and a 115VAC electrical outlet. The location should provide easy accessibility for future
maintenance and service. The SteamerGard™ unit should, be positioned so the filters face the most
open area for ease of future filter changes. DO NOT plug in the power cord at this time. Ensure that the
power switch is in the "off" position.
2. Locate the storage tank in any convenient place between the SteamerGard™ unit and the steamer.
Generally, the storage tank is located near the SteamerGard™ unit. The storage tank sets on the floor,
and does not need to be secured to the floor. The storage tank should be within 50 feet of the steamer-
Screw the shut-off valve (supplied) onto the threaded connection of the storage tank, then screw the tee
(supplied) onto the valve.
3. Locate the control panel on a wall near the steamer and position it to be within reach with access to a
cold water supply- Carefully holding the control panel against the wall, mark the four mounting hole
locations that will provide a level installation. Drill four holes at the marks for mounting the panel. Secure
the control pane! to the wall using four #12 x 1-1/2" screws and washers into four hollow wall anchors (or
most appropriate method). Ensure that the control panel is level.
4. Cold Tap Water Feed Line to the SteamerGard Unit: In accordance with accepted plumbing
methods, the SteamerGard™ unit should be plumbed from an existing cold water (cold soft water is
preferred if available) supply (1/2" minimum) using a tee and a shut-off valve. Run up to 25 feet of 1/2"
tubing from the valve at the cold water supply (preferably softened) to the FEED WATER connection on
the SteamerGard™ unit, but do not make the connection yet- If the SteamerGard™ installation requires
an unusually long feed water plumbing run it may be necessary to extend the cold water supply pipe to
within 25 feet of the unit.
OPTIONAL: Before connecting the feed water line to the SteamerGard™ unit, the storage tank may be
filled with tap water. Before tank is filled always check that the air precharge is 12 psi- If the tank is not
initially filled with water, it will take up to one hour for the SteamerGard™ system to fill the tank with
enough purified water to operate the steamer. If it is desirable to fill the tank, remove one of the plugs
from one side of the tee on the shut-off valve of the tank- Use the 1/2" X 3/8" reducer coupling (supplied)
and a short piece of 3/8" tubing to temporarily reduce the feed water line to the tank fitting size. Be sure
the other side of the tee is plugged- Connect the feed water line to the unplugged compression fitting of
the tee. Open the valve on the tank and open the cold tap water supply valve. Allow the tank to fill for
approximately 30 seconds. Close both valves. Disconnect the feed water line from the tank. Move the
tank to its permanent location.
Connect the feed water line to the FEED WATER connection on the SteamerGard™ unit.
2
5 Drain Water Line: Run up to 50 feet of 3/8" tubing (1/2" tubing if longer than 50 feet) from the DRAIN connection
of the SteamerGard™ unit to the nearest drain. The SteamerGard™ system has a pressurized drain and
therefore. the drain Tubing may be run up to 10 feet above the SteamerGard™ unit. The drain termination must
vent freely to the air, with a proper air gap between the tubing termination and the drain opening, in order to
comply with local plumbing codes.
6. Purified Water Line to the Storage Tank and Control Panel: Run 3/8" tubing from the STORAGE connection on
the SteamerGard™ unit to one side of the brass tee on the storage tank- Run up to 50 feet of 38" tubing
(1/2" tubing if longer than 50 feet) from the other side of the brass tee to the SteamerGard™ connection on the
control panel, mounted near the steamer.
7. Purified Water Line to the Steamer: Run 3/8" polybutylene tubing from the center connection on the control panel
to the steam generator (boiler) connection on the steamer, (not the condenser water connection). For correct
connection of this line, consult the steamer manufacturer.
IMPORTANT: When feeding the steamer with purified water from the SteamerGard™ system, it is
imperative that the steamer be fitted with two separate water connections; one for purified water to the
steam generator and a separate one for tap water to the condenser system. If the SteamerGard™
system is feeding purified water to a steamer that is equipped with only one feed water connection,
which internally branches off to both the steam generator (boiler) and the condenser system, the steamer
absolutely must be altered for use with the SteamerGard™ system. Consult the steamer manufacturer
for alteration instructions to convert the steamer from a single feed water connection to two separate
water connections; one for purified water to the steam generator and a separate one for tap water to the
condenser system8. Cold Tap Water Line to the Control Panel: In accordance with accepted plumbing
methods, the control panel should be plumbed from an existing cold tap water supply (near the steamer)
using a lee and a shut-off valve. Run 3/8" tubing from this valve to the 3/8" MANUAL BYPASS
compression fitting on the control panel.
9. Start-Up Procedure: Open the cold tap water valve at the main water supply, then open the feed water valve on
the SteamerGard™ unit. Inspect the feed water plumbing and filters for leaks and correct as necessary. Open the
valve on the storage tank(s) and inspect plumbing for leaks. Remove the cover from the SteamerGard™ unit,
exposing the controls, valves, pump and pump pressure gauge. Making sure the power switch is "off ", plug the
power cord into a 115VAC electrical outlet. Open the FLUSH VALVE so the handle is parallel to the valve body.
Push the toggle switch for at least 30 seconds to purge the system of air. Turn the handle on the BACK FLOW
REGULATOR counterclockwise until it just begins to feel loose. Check the TANK PRESSURE gauge on the
control panel near the steamer. It should read less than 50 psi (0 psi if tank was not pre-filled). Turn the power
switch to the "on" position. The red light and the pump motor will come on immediately. NOTE: If air has not beer
completely purged from the filters, the pump motor may cycle on and off several times due to a low pressure
condition. Allow the SteamerGard™ unit to run for approximately one minute, then slowly close the FLUSH
VALVE so its handle is perpendicular to the valve body. Observe the pump pressure gauge. It should read less
than 100 psi. Slowly turn the BACK FLOW REGULATOR clockwise to increase the pressure to approximately
180 psi (the normal operating pressure). System is now in operation and will continue until the tank fills to a
pressure of 50-60 psi when it will automatically shut off. The system is completely automatic so the power switch
should always remain in the "on" postion.
NOTE: The steamer must be operated for some time in order to clear the tap water out of the
SteamerGard™ system. Pushing the WATER QUALITY button before all tap water is cleared from
the system will result in a glowing red light.
The SteamerGard system is now in operation,
and the steamer can be used with purified water.

OPERATION
SteamerGard Unit
First, ensure that the main cold tap water valve is open and the feed water valve on the SteamerGard™ unit
is open. The valve handle will be parallel to the valve body. If the SteamerGard™ unit is new or filters have
just been changed, air should be purged from the system with the DEPRESSURIZE switch. Once the
SteamerGard™ unit is initially started by pushing the power switch to the "on" position and the pressure
controls are adjusted (See Start Up Procedure in Installation Manual), there is no need to shut off the unit
except for maintenance or servicing- The system is completely automatic and the power switch should
always remain in the "on" position. When the steamer is not in use, such as overnight, the system remains in
a "stand-ready" mode even though the power switch is in the "on" position. When the steamer is used, and it
begins to draw purified water from the storage tank, the system automatically responds, coming on just long
enough to maintain a full level of water in the storage tank. Then, the system returns to the "stand-ready"
mode. This cycle continues, automatically, during steamer operation
Low Pressure Switch:
Should the feed water pressure drop below 15 psi a low pressure switch automatically cuts off power to the pump motor,
to protect it from damage. When adequate feed water pressure returns, the switch will automatically turn the pump
motor back on.
IMPORTANT: If teed water conditions are such that the pressure fluctuates in the 15 psi
range, the SteamerGard™ unit may cycle on and off rapidly resulting in severe wear on the
pressure switch contacts. If this condition is observed, the SteamerGard™ unit should be
turned off immediately and corrective actions taken. Consult your factory representative for
preventive measures that will minimize the problem.
SteamerGard Controls and Monitors
The SteamerGard system is equipped with controls and monitors designed to allow the operator to make simple
adjustments, make servicing easy, and provide information about performance and system status. Even though the
SteamerGard unit is completely automatic it is important to be familiar with these controls.
Power and Depressurize Switch:
The power/depressurize switch has two functions. First, it controls the electrical power to the SteamerGard unit. and
second, it allows the operator to automatically depressurize the unit for servicing (e.g. filter changes). When the power
switch is pushed to the "ON" position (left, toward the motor), the system is on. When the power switch is in the middle
position, the system is off. When the power switch is pushed to the "DEPRESSURIZE" position and held, the system will
automatically depressurize (see Maintenance section for procedure). The system should not be depressurized during
normal operation.
Flush Valve:
During normal operation, the flush valve must be closed with its handle perpendicular to the valve body. The valve should
be opened slowly once a month to help keep the membrane dean. Also, the flush valve must be opened in order to
depressurize the system when making the required periodic filter changes or when servicing the system.
Pump Pressure Control:
During normal operation, when the OPERATING light is on, this control should be adjusted so that the pump pressure
gauge reads approximately 180 psi. Turning the BACK FLOW REGULATOR clockwise increases the pressure, while
counterclockwise decreases the pressure. Once the pressure is set, the
6
Pump Pressure Gauge:
During normal operation, when the pump is running, the pump pressure gauge should read approximately
180 psi. Under no circumstances should the pump pressure ever exceed 200 psi.
Control Panel
The control panel is designed to provide important information about SteamerGard™ water quality and
storage tank pressure, as well as to provide a manual system bypass to revert the steamer to tap water
operation should overuse or a malfunction cause the storage tank(s) to become depleted. The Water Quality
Monitor is activated by pushing the red button on the panel. A red or green light will glow, indicating water
quality. Should the storage tank pressure fall below 20 psi, it is recommended to manually bypass over to
tap water until the SteamerGard™ unit refills the storage tank.
Control Panel Controls and Monitors
Manual Bypass Valve:
During normal operation, the manual bypass valve handle must be turned fully clockwise (SteamerGard™
position). In the unlikely event that the SteamerGard™ unit becomes inoperative or its capacity is exceeded,
the manual bypass valve allows the SteamerGard™ system to be bypassed, providing untreated tap water
to the steamer until repairs can be made. To use the manual bypass valve, turn the handle fully clockwise so
that the handle points to the "bypass" position. Once necessary repairs are made, the handle must be
returned to the fully clockwise position, indicating that the steamer is once again being supplied with purified
water.
IMPORTANT: If the manual bypass must be used to ensure continued use of the steamer, the
SteamerGard™ system must be serviced immediately. Continued operation of the steamer
in the bypass (tap water) mode may result in damage to the steamer.
Tank Pressure Gauge:
This gauge will register at least 20 psi pressure when the storage tank is filled with enough water to operate
the steamer. If the gauge reads less than 30 - 40 psi, the SteamerGard™ unit will be in the operating mode.
If the gauge reads 50 - 60 psi, the storage tank will be filled and the SteamerGard™ unit will be in the "stand
ready" mode. In the unlikely event that the pressure falls so low that the steamer will not operate normally,
the manual bypass should be turned to the "bypass" position.
Water Quality Button:
When this button is pushed, either a red or a green light will glow, indicating the quality of the water
produced by the SteamerGard™ unit. This test should be performed at least once a month. Refer to the
Maintenance section for procedure.
7
MAINTENANCE
With regular preventive maintenance only once a month, your SteamerGard™ system should provide years of trouble-
free operation, and will continue to provide years of protection against steamer failure due to adverse water conditions.
Every month perform the following:
1. Test the purified water quality with the water quality monitor.
a. Make sure the SteamerGard™ unit is not in the bypass mode, otherwise the quality of the tap
water will be measured.
b. Push the WATER QUALITY button. A glowing green light indicates the RO module is producing high quality
water. A glowing green light is not an indication that the filters are good. A glowing red light indicates that
there may be a problem, and that service may be required. If the red light glows, wait 10 minutes and test again.
If the red light still glows, test again later in the day. If it still glows, the membrane either needs to be flushed
clean or requires replacement. (If neither the green nor the red light glows, replace the 9 volt battery located
behind the control panel.)
NOTE: Do not test the water quality if the steamer has not been in use for a while, such as first thing in the
morning. Accurate water quality measurements are attained after the steamer has been in use for a while. This
ensures that the SteamerGard™ system has been in operation, producing purified water.
2. Flush the membrane clean for 5 minutes while the system is operating.
NOTE: The SteamerGard unit cover may be removed for better access to the flush valve and other controls.
To remove, simply remove the two screws at the base of the cover and slide the cover off.
a. The system will flush the membrane clean only when it is in the operating mode, as indicated by the pump motor
running.
b. While The pump motor is running, open the FLUSH VALVE by turning its handle parallel to the valve body.
After 5 minutes, close the FLUSH VALVE by turning its handle perpendicular to the valve body.
IMPORTANT: If the feed water pressure to the SteamerGard™ unit is inadequate, the
SteamerGard™ unit may cycle on and off when the flush valve is opened. Should this occur, slowly
turn the flush valve handle toward the closed position, but not all the way, until cycling stops. After 5
minutes, close the FLUSH VALVE completely.
3. Check and adjust the pump pressure.
a. If the pump pressure does not read approximately 180 psi when the system is operating, the BACK FLOW
REGULATOR should be readjusted clockwise to increase the pressure or counterclockwise to decrease the
pressure. When the proper pump pressure is reached, the locking nut on the control should be tightened.
8
Every three months perform the following:
NOTE: The SteamerGard™ unit must be depressurized before changing any filter. To depressurize
the unit, first turn the power switch to the "OFF" (center) position. Close the water feed valve by
turning its handle until it is perpendicular to the valve body. Open the FLUSH VALVE by turning its
handle so it is parallel to the valve body. If the post treatment cartridge must be replaced, also close
the valve on the storage tank. Push and hold the power switch to the DEPRESSURIZE position for at
least 10 seconds. The unit will now be depressurized, allowing easy filter replacement.
IMPORTANT: After filter replacement, air should be purged out and the new filters flushed. Open
the feed water valve. Push and hold the power switch to the DEPRESSURIZE position for at least 1
minute. Close the FLUSH VALVE. Open the valve on the storage tank. Finally, push the power
switch to the "on" position. The SteamerGard™ unit is now ready for operation.
1. Visually check and, if required, replace the prefilter.
a. The clear prefilter bowl allows for easy inspection of the prefilter, without the need to remove the bowl. If
substantial accumulation of sediment and/or discoloration is evident, replace the prefilter with a new one. It is
imperative that a factory specified prefilter be used.
b. To replace the prefilter, unscrew the filter bowl to the left (counterclockwise as viewed from the bottom), using
the filter bowl wrench supplied (or strap wrench, or by hand). Remove the filter from the bowl, discard it, and
replace it with a new one. The O-ring seal may have to be replaced if it is damaged or distorted. Screw the filter
bowl onto the fitter head by hand.
NOTE: If the SteamerGard™ system is supplied with water high in sediment content, the prefilter may need to
be replaced more often than every three months. If the SteamerGard™ system is supplied with softened water,
the prefilter may last 6 months or more.
2. Change the carbon fitters. (Not required for optional CTA membranes)
a. If the water supply is chlorinated, the carbon fitters must be replaced every three months. Check with your local
water department. Nearly all municipal water supplies are chlorinated. If the water supply is not chlorinated
(well water without a chlorinator) the carbon filter can be eliminated. Membrane failure due to chlorine is not
covered under the manufacturer's limited warranty. It is imperative that a factory specified prefilter be used.
b. To replace the carbon filters, unscrew both filter bowls (as in step 1b above), and replace the carbon filters with
the new ones.
3. Visually check the level of media remaining in the post treatment cartridge.
a. The clear post treatment bowl allows for easy inspection of the post treatment cartridge, without the need to
remove the bowl. If the level of cartridge material remaining is less than 3 inches, as measured from the bottom
of the cartridge, replace the post treatment cartridge with a new one.
b. To replace the cartridge, unscrew the post treatment filter bowl (as in step 1 b above), and replace the post
treatment cartridge with a new one.
NOTE: The expected life of the post treatment cartridge depends upon the local water conditions, and can be
six months to a year, or more.
IMPORTANT: Refer to "IMPORTANT" procedure above after filters are replaced.
