Read before operating your cooktop

All appliances -regardless of the manufacturer -have the potential

through improper or careless use to create safety problems. Therefore

thefollowing safety precautions should be observed:

1. Be sure your applianceis properly installed and grounded by a

qualified technJcJan.

2. Never useyour appliancefor warming or heating theroom.

3.Children should not beleft aloneor unattended in area where

applianceis in useor still hot. They should never be allowed to sit

or stand on any part of the appliance.

4. Wear proper apparel. Loose-fitting or hanging garments should

never be worn while using the appliance.

5. Do not repair or replace any part of the applianceunless specifically

recommended in thismanual.All otherservicing should bereferred

to an authorized Jenn-Air Service Contractor.

6. Flammablematerials should not be stored near surfaceunits.

7. Do not use water ongrease fires.Smother fire or flame or use dry

chemical or foam-type extinguisher.

8. Use only dry potholders. Moist ordamp potholders on hot surfaces

may resultin bumsfrom steam,Do not let potholder touch hot

heating elements. Do not use a towel or other bulky cloth.

9. Use proper pan size. Many appliances are equipped with oneor

more surface units of different size. Select cookware havingflat

bottoms large enough to cover the surface unit heating element.

Theuse of undersized cookwarewill expose a portion ofthe heating

element to direct contact and may result in ignition of clothing.

Proper relationship of cookware to heating element will also im-

proveefficiencyand performance.

10. Never leave surface units unattended at high heat settings. Boil

over causes smoking and greasy spillovers that may ignite.

11, Glazedcookware - only certaintypes of glass,glass-ceramic,

ceramic, earthenware, or other glazed cookpots aresuitablefor

cooktop surface without breaking due to the sudden change in

temperature. Use only such cookware as you knowhas been

approved for this purpose.

12. Cookware handlesshould be turned inward and not extend over

adjacent surface heating elements to avoid burns, ignition of

flammable materials and spillagedue to unintentional contact with

thecookware.

13.CAUTION - Do not storeitems of interest to childrenincabinets

above a cooktop-children climbing on thecooktop toreachitems

could be seriously injured.

14. Do not touch surfaceunits or areas near units. Surface unitsmay

be hot even though they aredark in color. Areasnear surfaceunits

may become hot enough tocause burns. Duringand after use, do

not touch or letclothing or other flammable materials contact these

areas until they havehad sufficient time to cool.

15.Do not cook on glass-ceramiccooking surface if thecooktop is

broken. Cleaning solutions and spillovers may penetrate the

broken cooktop and create ashock hazard.Contact an authorized

Jenn-Air Service Contractor.

16. Cleanglass-ceramic cooktops with caution. If wetspongeor cloth

isused to wipe spillson a hot cooking area,be careful to avoid

steam burns. Some cleansers can produce noxious fumes if

applied to a hot surface,

17. Donot operate with damaged cooking element after any product

malfunction until proper repair has been made.

18.Keep all switches "OFF"when unit isnot in use.

19.Clean only parts listed in this manual and use proceduresrecom-

mended.

20. Do not use aluminum foil or foil containers on the cooktop. These

may become very hot.

21. Thisappliancehasbeentestedforsafeperformanceusingconven-

tionalcookware. Do not use any devicesor accessoriesthat arenot

specifically recommended inthis manual. Do not useeyelid covers

for the surface unitsor stovetop grills. The useof devices or

accessories that are not expressly recommended in thismanual

can createserioussafety hazards, result in performanceproblems,

and reduce the life of the components of the appliance.

When the inductionelementsare ON, a coolingfanwilloperate. The coolingfan does

notoperatewith the radiant andhalogenelements.

The sizeandtypeofcookwareusedandtheamountandtypeoffoodbeingcookedwill

influencethesettingneededfor bestcookingresults. Electricallinevoltagemay also

vary,whichwillaffecttheneededcontrolsetting. The settingindicatedshouldserveas

a guidewhileyoubecomefamiliar withyourcooktop.

The controlsoffer flexibilityin settingselection. On settingsother than Hi, you may

adjustthecontrolsaboveor belowthe numberedsettingfor bestresults. Suggested

settingsareprovidedas generalguidelines.

To achieve optimumcookingperformance,use heavy gauge, f/at, smooth bottom

cookpotsthat conformto the diameterofthe cookingarea. Proper cookpotswill

minimizecookingtimes,useless electricity,cook food moreevenlyand requireless

wateror oil.

Cookpotswiththin,unevenbottomsdo notadequatelyconductheatfromthecooking

areatothefood inthecookpotswhichresultsin hotspots,burnedorunderdonefood.

Usingbad cookpotsalso requiresmorewater,timeand energytocookfood.

•Select heavy gauge cookpots. Usually heavygauge cookpotswilJnotchange

shapewhen heated.

•Usecookpots with flat, smoothbottoms. Thetwowaystodetermineifcookpots

have a flat, smoothbottomaretherulertest andthe cookingtest.

Ruler Test:

1.Place the edge ofa ruleracrossthebottomofthepot.

2.Hold uptothe light.

3.No lightshouldbevisibleunderthe ruler.

Cooking Test:

2.Placecookpotonthecookingarea. Turn

controlto the Hi setting.

3.Observethebubbleformationtodetermine

the heat distribution.If the bubblesare

uniformacross thecookpot,thecookpot

willperformsatisfactorily.Ifthebubblesare

notuniform,thebubbleswillindicatethehot

spots.

•Match the size of the cookpot to the size ofthe elementIdeally,the cookpot

willbethesame sizeorslightlylarger.

UseJenn-Air'sflat bottomwok(ModelAO142)for

optimumresults.ModelAO142wokhasanonstick

finish,woodhandles, cover, steamingrack, rice

paddles,cookingtipsand recipes.

• Donotusecookwarethatextendsmorethan 1inchbeyondtheedgeofthecooking

area.

•Donotuseasmall cookpotonalargeelement. Notonlycan thiscausetheelement

to requiremoreenergyandtime,butitcanalsoresultinspilloversburningontothe

elementwhichcauseextra effort in cleaning.

• Donotusenonflatspecialty itemsthat are oversized,uneven or donot meet proper

cookware specifications such as round bottom woks with rings,rippled bottom

canners, and oversizedor non-flat bottomlobster pots, largepressurecanners and

griddles, etc.

• Test cast ironwaresince allare notflat. Also becautionedagainstpossible"impact

damage" should theheavy cookpot bedropped on the glass-ceramic surface.

Acceptablecanningpotsshould notbe oversizedand musthave aflat bottom.When

canners do not meetthese standards,the useof theHi settingbecomes excessive and

may result in damage to the cooktop. In addition, water may not come to a boil and

canners may not reach 10 Ibs.of pressure.

The acceptable canning procedure uses theHi setting just long enough to bring the

water to a boil, then lower thesetting to maintain thewater temperature.

Heavy gaugecookpots withflat, smooth bottomswillusuallywork in a similarway.

However, there aresome differencesin the cooking performance of variousmaterials.

•Aluminum cookpotsheat quickly and evenly. Best suitedfor simmering, braising,

boiling and frying.

Note: Aluminum cookpotswill causemetalmarks on theglass-ceramic surface if

you slide them across thecooktop. Removemetal marks immediately.

•Stainless steel ceokpotswill evenly distribute heat if constructed of tri-ply or

combined with other metals such as aluminum and copper. Usefor cooking

functions similar to aluminum.

•Cast iron cookpots are slow to heat but cook more evenly once temperatureis

reached. Use for long term low heat cooking or for browning end frying.

•Porcelain enamel-on-steel or porcelain enamel-on-cast iron should beused

according to manufacturer's directions. Do not allow to boil dry.

•Glass-ceramic, earthenware, heatproofglass orglazed cookpots may scratch the

glass-ceramic cooktop and therefore arenot recommended.

Note Halogen element:Aluminum cookpots may cause the element to cycle even

when the controtsettingis Hi.

The cookingareas are identified by circleson the glass-ceramic cooktop.When an

elementisturnedON, thecooktopwillheatupandthe rodglowofthe heatingelement

can beseen throughthe glass-ceramictop. It is normalto see the red glow ofthe

elementwheneveritis ON.

• BEFORE FIRST USE CLEAN COOKTOP.(See p. 16.)

• Forbest results,alwaysuserecommendedcookwaro.

•Makesurebottomofcookwaroisclean beforeplacingon cooktop.

•Coveringpans,wheneverpossible,speedscookingandismoreenergyefficient.

Thisisespeciallyimportantwhen cookinglargequantitiesoffoods.

•Theglass-ceramiccookingarea retainsheatforaperiodoftimeaftertheelements

havebeenturnedoff. Putthis retainedheattogooduse.Turntheelementsoffa

fewminutesbeforefoodiscompletelycookedandusetheretainedheattocomplete

thecooking. Becauseofthisheat retentioncharacteristic,the elementswirlnot

respondtochangesinsettingsas quicklyascoilelements.Intheeventofapotential

boilover,removethe cookpotfromthecookingarea.

•When preparingfoodswhichcanbe easilyscorchedorovercooked,startcooking

at a lowersettingand graduallyincreasesettingas needed.

• A rowersettingcan beusedwhen cookingsmallquantitiesoffoodsorwhen using

a cookpotthatconductsheat quickly.

•A highersettingthannormalmaybenecessarywhenusingcookpotsmadewitha

materialthatisslowto conductheat, suchascastiron.

IMPORTANT

•Do notusewiretrivets,fire rings,padsorany suchitembetweenthe cookwaro

and theelement.

•Do notcookfoodsdirectlyon cooktop.

•Do notallow panto boildry as thiscoulddamagethecooktopandthepan.

•Do not slide heavymetal or glass cookpotsacrosssurface since thesemay

scratchthesurface.

•Do not useor placeplasticitemsanywhereon cooktop.

• Donotallowplasticobjects,sugar,orfoodswith highsugarcontentto meltontothe

hctcooktop. Melted materialscan cause permanent damageto thecooktop. Ifyou

accidentally melt anythingontothe cooktop,ora sugarysolutionboilsover, remove

it immediatelywhilethecooktop isstillhot. Carefully, useasingle edge razor blade

held with apot holder to scrapethe melted material or sugary boilover to acooler

areaofthecooktop. Useseverallayersofpapertowel towipeupthespillover, being

carefulnot to bum yourself.When theelement hascooled, usetherazor bladeto

scrape off the remainingsoiland clean as you wouldfor heavy spills. (See p. 16.)

•Do not usealuminumfoil or foil-type containers under any circumstances. Alumi-

numfoilwilldamagethecooktopif itmeltsontotheglass. If metalmeltsoncook'top,

do not use. Call an authorized Jenn-Air Service Contractor.

• Do not use theglass-ceramiccooktop as a cutting board.

• DoNOTuseabrasivecleansingpowders orscouringpads (includingmetalscouring

pads),which will scratch the cooktop.

• Do NOT use chlorine bleach, ammonia, rust removers, oven cleaners,or other

cleanser not specifically recommended for use on glass-ceramic.

•Makesurebottomsofcookpotsare alwayscleanand dry. (Soil fromthecookpot

bottomcanbetransferredtothecooktopsurface.) Beforeusingcookpotsonthe

glass-ceramiccooktopfor the first time, and periodicallyas needed, clean the

bottomswithscouringpads or othercleansers. Rinseand dry thoroughly.

•Makeita practicetowipecooktopsurfacewitha clean dampclothorpapertowel

beforeeachuse;drythoroughly.Invisiblespatters,dustspecks,cleansersorwater

cancausestainsthatappearafter unit isheated.A spongeordishclothwhichis

notcleanwillleavefilmand soilladendetergentwaterwhichmaycausestainson

surfaceafterarea is heated.

•Whenfrying, usea spattershieldto reducespattering.

•Usecorrectcontrolsettingsand cookwarelargeenoughto holdfoodand liquidto

preventboiloversand spattering.

•Ifa badspilloveroccurswhilecooking,spillsmaybecleanedfromthecooktopwhile

itishotto preventa toughcleaningchorelater. Usingextremecare, wipewitha

cleandamptowel. Becarefultoavoidbumsfromsteamor handstouchingthehot

cooktop.

Whenchoosingcookwarefor the inductionelements,considerthe material,gauge,and

sizeofthe cookware. Note; Cookwaredoes NOT haveto befiat foroptimum

performanceon the inductionelements.

The cookware MUST bemadeof a ferromagneticmaterial inorder to work onthe

induction cooktop. To determine if a material is magnetic, test the bottom of the

cookware with a magnet.If the magnet sticksto theoutsidebottom of the oookware,

thecookware will work on your induction element.

Examples of magnetic material are:

•porcelain on steel;

• porcelain on cast-iron;

• cast-iron; and

• tri-ply stainless steel.

Examplesof nonferromagnetic materials,which do NOT work onthe induction elements

are:

• aluminumor aluminumclad;

•copperor copperclad;

•porcelainon aluminum;

•glass-ceramic;or

•earthenware.

Cookwarecomes ina variety ofgaugethicknesses.Thingaugepots willperformwell

in bringing water to a boil quickly,simmering,and stewing. Heavier gauge skillets

providea better overall browning pattern.

•CookpotsMUST beat least4or moreinches in diameter in orderto workonthe

inductioncooktop.

•Forbetterbrowningwhenpan-frying,matchthebottomdiameterofthe skilletwith

thesizeofthe cookingarea.

UseJenn-Air'sflat bottomwok (ModelAO142) for

optimumresults. ModelAO142 wokhasa nonstick

finish, wood handles, cover, steaming rack, rice

paddles,cooking tips and recipes.12

An inductioncooktoprespondslikea gascooktop,quickto heat and instantresponse

when turned off. Thecookingareas are identifiedby circleson the glass-ceramic

cooktop. When an elementisturnedON, the inductioncoilslocatedunderthe glass

createa magneticfield. When a ferromagneticpotatleast4"indiameterisplacedon

the element,the potgets hot,

• Placethe cook,poton the cookingarea beforeturningonthe controls.

•DO NOT HEAT AN EMPTY COOKPOT OR SKILLET.

•Since inductioncookingis fast, start cookingat the recommendedsetting. For

instancewhenpanfrying,startcookingata mediumsetting.Donotpreheata skillet

atahighersetting. Since theskilletbeginsto heat immediatelywithinduction, food

could be burned beforethe control setting was lowered.

• If a food starts to boil over, reducethecontrol setting. Theinductionelementswill

respond instantly.

IMPORTANT

•Do NOTuse coppercookware.

•Do NOT allowpotsto boildry.

•Do NOT heatan emptyskillet.

• Slowlyheatand coolporcelainpots.Rapidchanges intemperaturemay cause

crazingoftheporcelainfinish.

Eachinductioncookingareahasapotsensorwhichwillcausea "beep-beep"to come

onwhen:

• no cookpot issitting on the cooking area which was turned on.

•element was turned on and cookpot is madefrom anonmagnetic material (see

cookware section for examples).

• cookpot is removed from the element without turning off thecontrol.

• size of the cookpot is lessthan 4 inches in diameter and control wasturned on.

Thebuilt-inventilation systemremoves cooking vapors, odors, smokeand steam from

foods preparedonthe oooktop. Regular useofthis system will insure amore

comfortable andless humid kitchen which isfree ofheavy cooking odors and fumes that

normallycreateafrequentneed forcleaningandredecorating.

• The fan controlis located atthe front ofthecontrol panel,To operatetheventilation

system manually, turn thefancontrol knob clockwise. Thevariable speed fan can

beoperatedat aninfinitenumber of settings.

•Besides using the ventilation system to remove cooking vaporsand fumes, it can

beusedto coolbaked pies, cakes or hotpans,To coolan item, set it onthe air grille

and turn onthefan. The air being pulledover theitemwill quickly cool it. Becareful

not tocover theentireairgrille.

•The fan can beused to removestrong odors from the kitchenas when chopping

onions nearthe fan,

Air Grille

The air grilleliftsoffeasily. Wipe clean orwash insinkwith mild household detergents,itmay

be cleaned inthedishwasher.

•Filter

Turnoff ventilation system beforeremoving, The filter is e

permanent typeand should becleaned when soiled. Clean

in sinkwithwarm water and liquid dishwashing detergent or

in dishwasher.

Important: DO NOT OPERATE SYSTEM WITHOUT FIL-

TER. FiltersbouldalwaysbepJacedatanangJe.Asyouface

thefrontoftheccoktop,thebottomofthe filtershouldreston

theledgeon therightside. The topoftheliftershouldrest

againstthe leftside.There are also ledges onthe frontand

rearsidesfor thefiltertorest.(Note:If filterisflatagainstthe

fanwall,ventilation effectivenessisreduced.)

Ventilation Chamber

This area, whichhousesthefilter,shouldbecleanedintheeventofspillsorwheneveritbecomes

coatedwithe filmofgrease,ttmaybe cleanedwithpapertowel,damp cloth,orsponge andmild

householddetergentorcleanser.

Jenn-Air'sventilationsystemis designedto capture bothcookingfumes,smokeand

steam.Ifthe systemdoesnot,thesearesome ductinginstallationsituationstocheck:

• 6"diameterroundor 3¼" x 10" rectangularductingshouldbeused. Note: 5"

diameterroundductingmay beusedifthe ductlengthis 10'or less.

•No morethanthree90° elbowsshouldbeused. Distancebetweenelbowsshould

beat least 18",

•RecommendedJenn-Airwall cap shouldbeused. Makesuredampermoves

freelywhenventilationsystemisoperating.

•Thereshouldbea minimumclearanceof6"for cooktopinstalledneara sidewall.

Ifthereis not an obviousimproperinstallation,theremay bea concealedproblem

suchasa pinchedjoint,obstructioninthepipe,etc. Installationistheresoonsibilitvof

theinstallerand questionsshouldbe addressedfirst by the installer. The installer

shouldverycarefullycheck the ductinginstallationinstructions.

BEFORE CLEANING, BE CERTAIN ALL ELEMENTS ARE TURNED OFF AND THE

COOKTOP IS COOL.

CAUTION: Do NOT useacooktopcleaneron a hot cooktop.The fumes can be

hazardous to your health and canchemically attackthe g ass-oeram c

surface.

NOTE: Plastic objects, sugar or foods with high sugar content allowed to melt onto

thecooktop can causedamage.Seepage 11 for cleaning instructions,

• Forgeneraldailycleaningandlightsurfasesoil, useacleandishclothorpapertowel

and wash surface with solution ofwater and any ofthese cleansers: dishwashing

liquidsuch as Ivory or Joy,baking soda, fine polishing powders such as Bon Ami,

or commercial ceramic cooktop cleansers such as Cooktop Cleaning Creme(Part

No. 20000001). Wipewith cleandamp cloth or paper towel. Rinseanddry

thoroughly.

•To removeresiduefromburnedonspills,make a paste ofwater and baking soda

orBonAmi, Bar Keepers Friend, Comet, Shiny Sinks or nonabrasive soft scrubbing

cleansers,such as Cook'top Cleaning Creme (Part No.20000001). Scrub w_th

paper towels, nylonor plastic scrubber, such as Tufty. Rinseand dry thoroughly.

Ifstain is notremoved easily,a?lowpasteto remain on surface for30 to 40 minutes.

Keep moist by covering with wet paper towelor plastic wrap.

•To remove burnt on spot,use a single edgerazor blade.Placeblade edge on

cooktop at 30° angle; scrape off spot. Clean remainder ofsoil with method

described above.

To removeknobs, turn to theOFF position. Pull each knob straight up from the shaft.

Wash knobs in warmsoapy water or dishwasher; do not useabrasivecleaners or

materials. Toreplace each knob, matchflat part of knobopening withthe spring on the

flat part of theshaft, returning to OFF position.
