1. Important Information
IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTINUING
- For an understanding of the BLE tab that was added for the smart bulbs, see Appendix A. It is recommended that this appendix be
read before starting the deployment process.
- Using this product in a manner that is not consistent with this document will void your warranty.
- Connecting to a dimmer type device that varies the amount of power delivered to the smart bulb will damage the bulb.
- When adding a smart bulb to an electrical circuit that incorporates a dimmer type device, the dimmer should be replaced with either
a toggle switch or wired so that 120V AC is always supplied to the bulb socket.
- When adding a smart bulb to a circuit that is hardwired to the output wire of a Metropolitan Style Dimmer (WID), Keypad (WIK), or
Switch (WIS), the Always On checkbox in the Lighting and Keypad manager must be checked (enabled). Always On mode ensures
the output wire (load) remains constant at 120V AC.
- When adding a smart bulb to the output of a lamp control (SAV-LMP-0300), the Always On checkbox in the Lighting and Keypad
manager must be checked (enabled). Always On mode ensures the output of the lamp control remains constant at 120V AC.
Definitions:
- BLE Gateway (Bluetooth Low Energy) - During the configuration process, a BLE gateway is the bridge between a smart bulb/strip and the Lighting and
Keypads Manager. During normal operation, a BLE gateway is the bridge between the smart bulb or strip and the Savant Pro System Host. The Metropolitan
WID, WIK, WIS, and Lamp Control can be configured to function as a BLE gateway.
- ProxyThe proxy is a random bulb or strip discovered during the BLE Scan process. The proxy is used as a bridge and allows communication to occur
between the Lighting Manager and other discovered bulbs that are not the proxy. Once the proxy is connected to the Lighting Manager any of the other
discovered bulbs can be blinked, switched on and off, or their color changed.
- Smart GroupEach smart group created generates a load in the lighting service of the Savant Pro App. The load generated controls all the bulbs and strips
added to that group. Smart Groups are first created under each Metropolitan lighting device configured as a BLE Gateway. Once created, smart bulbs and
strips are then added to this group. Up to 40 bulbs can be added to each smart group and up to seven smart groups per BLE Gateway is allowed.

6. Configure Bluetooth (BLE) Gateway(s)
Savant smart lighting needs to communicate with the Pro System Host. To do this, a BLE gateway which talks to both the Pro System Host and the smart lighting
must be established. Any of the Metropolitan lighting products (WID, WIK, WIS, SAV-0300-LMP) can be set up to function as this gateway. The steps below
describe how to set up a Metropolitan lighting device to function as a BLE gateway.
1. In Blueprint, open the Lighting and Keypad Manager (Tools > Savant Lighting and Keypads…).
2. Select the Wi-Fi Lighting Devices tab.
3. Add a check to the BLE Gateway checkbox for each device being used as a BLE gateway.
4. Select the BLE Devices tab
5. The checked device(s) from step 4 above will now be available in the BLE Devices tab. See image below.
Additional Information:
- In the steps above, the WID in the Family Room and WIK in the Kitchen are being configured to be a BLE gateway.

7. Create Smart Groups
To control a smart bulb or smart strip, they must be added to a smart group. Each smart group added to the configuration will be treated as one load and appear
as a single button or slider control in the Savant Pro App. The steps below create a smart group for the Family Room and a smart group for the Kitchen.
1. Select the BLE Devices tab if not already selected.
2. Select a keypad from the list of keypads. (In this procedure, a Metropolitan Wireless Dimmer was selected (See image below).
3. Select the add button to add a New Smart Group.
HELPFUL! Smart groups are automatically assigned the same Location as the keypad they are attached to. Changing the location of the keypad
in the Wi-Fi Lighting Devices tab, will also change the location of the smart group.
4. Double-click the New Smart Group and update the Name.
5. Repeat steps 2 4 above to add additional smart groups. As stated above, each smart group will add a load to the Savant Pro App.
Additional Information on Smart Groups:
- Up to 7 smart groups per BLE gateway is supported.
- Up to 40 smart bulbs per BLE gateway is supported.
- If a separate load to control each bulb is desired (button/slider in the Savant Pro App), a smart group for each smart bulb/strip should be
created.
- A Not Assigned smart group is where smart bulbs/strips are collected during the smart bulb/strip Bluetooth discovery process. Unlike a user
created smart group, the devices collected in this group are dynamic and will be lost once disconnected from the BLE gateway.

8. Establish Communication between the Lighting Manager and a BLE Gateway
Before adding a smart bulb/strip to a configuration, the Lighting and Keypad Manager in Blueprint, and a BLE gateways from the room you are currently working in
need to communicate with each other (In this case it is the Family Room). The steps below make this connection.
1. Select the BLE Devices tab.
2. Verify the UID’s in the UID/Address field are populated and correct for each BLE gateway.
3. Select the Scan Gateways button and the Lighting and Keypad Manager will scan for all BLE gateways on the network. When the gateways are found, a
Green Status LED as well as a Connect button will appear next to each device. See image below.
HELPFUL! The scan will find all BLE gateways in the network. Even if it is not in the immediate room you are working in. In the image below, BLE
Gateways in the Family Room and Kitchen were found.
4. Select the Stop button (Not shown in image) once all BLE gateways are found.
5. To connect to one of the BLE Gateway, select the Connect button alongside the gateway. When the Lighting and Keypad Manager and BLE gateway are

9. Applying Power to Smart Bulbs/Strips
9.1. Always On Mode
If a smart bulb/strip will be connected to the output of a Metropolitan device (WID, WIK, WIS, SAV-LMP-0300), the Always On mode must be set on that
BLE gateway. Follow the steps below to do this. If a smart bulb is NOT being connected to the output, skip this section and start with section 10.2 below.
1. Select the BLE Devices tab.
2. Add a check to the Always On checkbox if the BLE gateway will have a smart bulb/strip connected to its output.
9.2. Apply Power to Bulbs in Room 1
Apply power to the smart bulbs/strips in the room where the BLE gateways from step 9 above are located. The bulb/strips will go through a startup
sequence and flash the following colors:
White à Blue à Orange à Magenta à White
Once the color goes to solid white, this indicates it is set to its factory defaults and is ready to be commissioned to a Bluetooth Mesh network.
TIP! If a smart bulb/strip doesn’t flash the sequence described above, or it doesn’t not end up switching to white, the bulb/strip is in a state that won’t
allow it to be commissioned. To fix this, cycle the power to the bulb four times. This sets the bulb/strip back to its factory defaults and forces the
sequence shown above.

10. Locate and Move Smart Bulbs into Smart Groups
The smart bulbs/strips can now be added to their respective smart groups. Since only one smart bulb gateway can communicate with the Lighting Manager at one
time, the process will start with the BLE Gateway that is currently connected from Section 8 above.
10.1. Discover Smart Bulbs and Determine a Proxy
With the Lighting and Keypad Manager and the BLE gateway communicating, and the bulbs powered up, the next step is to scan the Bluetooth network
for smart bulbs/strips and then determine which bulb/strip will become the proxy.
This proxy is a bridge between a BLE gateway and the remaining smart bulbs/strips. The proxy is a random bulb/strip decided on by the user and should
be the bulb/strip that has the highest BLE RSSI value. To scan, locate, and determine the proxy, do the following:
HELPFUL! RSSI values typically range from -25 dBM to -100 dBM. A higher BLE RSSI indicates a stronger received signal. For example, if the BLE
gateway receives a signal with a BLE RSSI value of -65 dBM and a second signal of -85 dBM, the -65 dBM signal is the stronger one.
1. Select the BLE Devices tab if not already selected.
2. Select the Start BLE Scan button. A Bluetooth scan begins and looks for any smart bulbs/strips in the area. As each is found, it is populated under
the Not Assigned smart group. In addition, a Connect button appears beside each smart bulb/strip (see image below).
3. Once all bulbs are found, select the Stop BLE Scan button (image not shown).

4. Locate the bulb/strip with the highest BLE RSSI value. This will be the proxy.
5. Select the Connect button associated with this bulb/strip. The button will change from to and then once the
bulb/strip is connected to the Lighting and Keypad Manager. In addition, the color of the smart bulb/strip will switch to orange.
TIP! Connecting a bulb or strip to the Lighting and Keypad Manager can take up to 30 seconds so be patient.
6. Select the Blink button at the bottom of the Lighting and Keypad Manager window and verify the proxy bulb/strip blinks red.

10.2. Move Bulbs/Strips into Smart Group
With the proxy found, each of the remaining smart bulbs can be moved into their respective smart group. To determine the location of each bulb within
the room, each bulb can be blinked. Once the location is determined, it can be moved into its respective smart group. The instructions below blink each
bulb and move it into the Recessed Can Lights smart group created earlier.
1. Select one of the other discovered bulbs/strips from the list of bulbs/strips.
2. Select the Blink button.
3. If the bulb/strip that blinks will be part of the Recessed Can Lights smart group created earlier, drag and drop the bulb into that smart group.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 and move the smart bulbs/strips including the proxy into the smart group. When done the smart group will contain the
bulbs/strips. See image below.
Additional Information!

10.3. Commission Bulbs
Commissioning the bulbs will utilize the proxy you are currently connected to from section 11.2 above. Follow the instructions below to commission the
bulbs/strips in the smart group.
1. With the proxy still connected, highlight one of the other smart bulbs/strips in the smart group.
2. Select the Commission button. Button is located at the bottom of the BLE Devices tab.
3. In the pop-up dialog window that opens, read and understand the dialog.
4. Select Continue to the pop-up message. The Commission button will switch to and then back to once the bulb/strip is
commissioned. In addition, the Status LED will switch from yellow to green.
5. Continue to commission each smart bulb/strip in the smart group that is not the proxy bulb.
6. Once all non-proxy smart bulbs are commissioned, select the proxy and commission it. All bulbs in the smart group should now be commissioned.
7. Select the smart group where the commissioned bulbs are located.
8. Select the Blink button and verify all the bulbs in the smart group blink red. (in this procedure, Recessed Can Lights was selected). If any of the
bulbs/strips do not blink, refer to the Helpful Tip below on how to recommission any failed bulbs or strips.
9. OPTIONAL: With the smart group still highlighted, select the color well at bottom of the Lighting and Keypads window. In the Colors window that
opens, choose a color and all the bulbs/strips in the smart group will switch to that color. The color picked will be the default color that the
bulbs/strips in this smart group will return to in the event there is a power outage or similar. Different colors for each group can be configured.
10. Once satisfied the bulbs are configured and functioning, select the button associated with the proxy to disconnect the proxy from the
Lighting and Keypad Manager.
HELPFUL TIP! In step 8 above, if a bulb/strip does not blink, it may need to be commissioned again. Follow the steps below to recommission a bulb/strip.
1. Determine which bulb/strip failed by selecting each bulb and blinking them again until the failed bub is found or in some instances, a pop-up window
will open alerting you to the failure. Within that message is the UID of the failed bulb.
2. Select Disconnect button to disconnect from the proxy.
3. Select the Connect button associated with the failed bulb.
4. Once connected to the failed bulb, select Commission to recommission the bulb/strip (this bulb/strip will now become the proxy).
5. Select Blink to verify it is now commissioned.
6. Select the smart group again and select Blink. All bulbs/strips in the smart group should now blink (including the failed bulb).
7. Select Disconnect to disconnect the proxy from the Lighting and Keypad Manager.
