To recover from a boot disk failure, see “Boot Disk Failure Recovery” on
page 40.
Comply with the following requirements:
Power outlet shall be equipped with earthing (ground) protection.
The outlet shall be installed near the equipment and shall be easily accessible.
Use the appliance coupler as the disconnect device (see the illustrations in the
“Cable Connections Scheme” section starting on page 9). However,
disconnecting the power cord from the appliance coupler should only occur
when the unit
power is shut down properly. See “Switching the Server On and
Off” on page 6 for information on properly turning off power to the unit.
To help prevent damage to the DVN 5000 server from power surges and
spikes, you must use a surge protector with a minimum energy rating of
1,700 Joules. If using an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
(recommended) that complies with the energy rating requirements, you do
not need to use a separate surge protector. For a surge protector, we
recommend the American Power Conversion (APC®) PRO8 Professional
SurgeArrest® model. If you are using a UPS, read the section
“Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)” on page 6 before continuing.
T
o connect the power:
1. Connect one end of the power cord to the appliance
coupler of the server.
2. Plug in the other end of the power c
ord to the power outlet.
IMPORTANT
If using a UPS, refer to the device’s user documentation for proper power
connections to and from the device. See also “Uninterruptible Power
Supply (UPS)” on page 6.
WARNING: Risk of Fire or Electric Shock.
Check the power supply cord for damage before using. If damaged, do
not switch on the appliance. Replace the cord with same type and
ratings. Contact with components carrying hazardous voltage can
cause electric shock and may result in severe personal injury or death.

Switching the Server On and Off
All models of the DVN 5000 Series servers are equipped with a main power switch
located at the back of the server that turns the power on and off.
In addition, the server is equipped with a soft power switch locate
d at the front of the
server (see the following illustration). It is enabled only when the universal power
supply switch on the back of the unit (if present) is turned on.
NOTES
Some models of universal power supply do not have a power switch.
The mouse, monitor, and any external storage devices must be connected to
the server before turning on the power. See the illustrations in the “Cable
Connections Scheme” section starting on page 9 for the locations of the
mouse, monitor, and external storage device connectors.
IMPORTANT
Do not open the top of the unit when the server is powered on. Except for
the lithium battery (see page 8), there are no user serviceable parts inside
the DVN. In addition, opening the DVN 5000 during the unit’s warranty
period will
tear the warranty seal and void the unit’s warranty. See also
page 9.

NOTE
The backup time and therefore battery size varies, depending on the
requirements of the site.
IMPORTANT
If the UPS device does not provide sufficient surge protection, you must
use a separate surge protector with a minimum energy rating of
1700
Joules. If you are using a UPS device and a surge protector, connect
the surge protector to the power source (AC power line). Connect the UPS
device to the surge protector. Then connect the DVN 5000 to the UPS
device.
DVN 5000--->UPS Device--->Surge Protector--->Power Source (AC power
line)
For more information on using a UPS device with the DVN 5000, refer to the
DVN
5000 Series Software Installation and Configuration Manual.
Voltage Selection
The DVN 5000 series server does not have a voltage selection switch. The rating is
100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Verify that this voltage type and range matches the local
power supply value.
Non Standard Connectors Rating
The rating of non standard connectors (alarm relays outputs and switched digital
inputs) is maximum 0.5 A at 12 VDC, 24 VAC, or max 42 VDC for all DVN
5000
Series models.
Mounting
If applicable, mount the unit in an appropriate server rack using the rack
manufacturers specific mounting hardware or on a fixed shelf.
IMPORTANT
Do not place the DVN 5000 in a location where the unit’s vents will be
obstructed, as this may cause the unit to overheat.
Refer to the rack manufacturers documentation for instructions on the proper
installation of rack-mounted devices, including any weight and spacing
requirements and restrictions. Ideally, if using a server rack, mount any UPS device
at the bottom of the rack followed by the DVN
5000 server(s). For proper
ventilation, leave some space between the units.

PCB Card Replacement
When replacing a PCB card, dispose of the old card according to local requirements.
Servicing and Repair
Except for the battery, there are no user serviceable parts inside the unit. Refer to
your dealer for any service needs.
Warranty Information
Each DVN 5000 has a warranty sticker affixed to the outside of the unit listing the
DVN model, manufacturing date code, country where the unit was assembled, and a
warning statement. This sticker must be affixed to the unit and intact to receive
warranty service on a defective DVN unit at a Johnson Controls authorized repair
facility.
Important: Removing or tearing the sticker voids the unit’s warranty. Also, do not
attempt to open the DVN unit during the unit’s warranty period, as this will break
the warranty sticker’s seal and void the unit’s warranty.
CABLE CONNECTIONS SCHEME
The back of the DVN 5000 you receive will have one of the following component
configurations, as illustrated in the following figures. Refer to the figure that matches your
DVN
5000.
