Check list for installation
This summary is intended for the experienced installer who has
already installed ADAP-KOOL
®
refrigeration controls on earlier
occasions.
(Appendix 3 may also be used).
1. All AKC controllers must be installed. An address must be set
for each controller.
2. The data communication cable must be connected to all the
controllers. The two controllers at either end of the data com-
munication cable must be terminated.
3. Connect the RS232 cable between the PC and the PC gateway
(switch off the units, if they are on).
4. Determine which unit is to be the master (system address =
xxx:125).
(Normally the PC gateway, but if there is also a modem
gateway, it ought to be the latter).
5. Set the system address in the gateway (Network and Address )
6. Set router lines in the gateway.
7. Install the programme on the PC.
Among other things:
Set the system address in the programme (yyy:zzz) e.g 51:124
Set communikation port (COM 1 9)
8. Defi ne a printer, if applicable.
9. Import any description fi les for AKC controllers.
10. Upload data from the network
- ”Net confi guration” from the master gateway
- ”AKC description from the controllers.
11. Proceed with the arrangement as to how the system should
be shown in the programme (next document)

Options
AKM
AKM is the programme with many functions. The programme
gives you an overview of all functions in all connected refriger-
ating systems. The programme is used by service centres or in
systems where more functions are required than can be obtained
with AK Monitor.
AK Monitor
AK Monitor is the programme with a few easy-to-use functions.
The programme gives you an overview of temperatures and
alarms in the local refrigerating plant.
A service centre is depicted here which shows the possibilities of-
fered for connections to other systems.
- The most common one used is where AKM receives alarms from
other networks. This connection is shown on the Com 1 port.
- If it is only a question of service, connection can take place as
shown on the Com 2 port.
- If data are received from a plant containing monitoring unit type
m2, it must be done with a separate modem as shown on the
Com 3 port.
- Alarms can also be retransmitted from a mobile telephone which
is connected the Com 4 port.
- If AKM is to transmit data via an Ethernet it must be done by
means of a server. The fundamental connection is shown on the
Com 5 port/net card and described in more detail in Appendix 1.
- In AKM5 the programme has been extended so that it can enter
into direct communication with even more networks.
The connection shown on Com 1, 2 and 5 can be extended with
up to eight connections of the same type. In other words, up to
21 more connections than shown in the drawing. Each extension
will require its own Com port.
An example is shown here from a food store. A number of control-
lers regulate the individual refrigeration points. The modem
gateway collects data from each of the refrigeration points and
transfers these data to the PC with the AK Monitor or to a service
centre via the modem connection.
Alarms are transmitted to the PC during the shops opening hours
and to the service centre outside of opening hours.

Prior to installation
Requirements to the PC
- One 80586 / pentium, 300 MHz with at least 64 MB RAM (128
MB, if XP or Windows 2000).
The PC type must be contained in Microsofts positive list for
Windows.
If the PC is hooked up to three or more connections (channels),
a faster PC with a processor of at least 1 GHz will be required.
- Graphic display unit, VGA or higher resolution.
- Serial port for connection of gateway. A hardware handshake
is required between the PC and the gateway. A 3 m long cable
between the PC and the gateway may be ordered from Danfoss.
If a longer cable is required (but max. 15 m), this can be made
based on the diagrams shown in the gateway manual.
- There must be more serial ports in the PC if more connec-
tions are required. See illustration on page 3. Various modem
connections are illustrated here. It is a requirement that a
separate modem be used if there is contact to a plant with
monitoring unit type m2. If a GSM modem (telephone) is
connected directly to the PC’s Com.port, the modem must
be a Siemens type TC35. This modem has been tested for its
application and found to be OK.
Have your PC dealer install the additional ports - it is not quite
simple.
- Parallel port for connection of printer.
- A plug is supplied with the programme. This plug must be
placed in the PC’s printer port before the programme can be
used. If a printer also has to be connected to this port, the
printer cable is simply connected to the plug (the supplied plug
is inserted as an extension of the printer cable). The plug will
not interfere with the normal printer signal.
- Mouse or the like.
- When there is direct modem connection and communication
speeds in excess of 19200 baud, a 16 bit UART (16550) will be
required.
Requirements to software
- MS Windows 95/98/2000 or XP must be installed.
- The programme will require a free disk capacity of at least 50
MB to allow it to be installed, (i.e. 50 MB free capacity when
WINDOWS has been started).
- No memory resident DOS programmes must be installed.
- Write-caching must not be used. There will be loss of data, if
the PC is switched off at the wrong time (read the WINDOWS
manual, if need be).
Change of software version
Before installation is commenced, a backup should be made of
the existing version.
If the installation of the new version does not work out as
planned, the earlier version can be reinstalled.
Files with system data must be placed in the library: (drive):\
AKM\ DATAB. These les are not changed when a programme is
exchan ged.
The plug placed in the PC’s printer port must be left in. The AKM
programme will read a code in the plug and then open up” for
the required fi les.
The gateway
There are diff erent types of gateways. They can all be used as
connecting point for the PC, but sometimes it is enough to use the
somewhat smaller gateway type AKA 241.
Diff erent ways of making connections are illustrated in Appendix
3. Use the way that is best suited for your plant.
NB
If your plant also contains controllers of the type EKC you must
use a gateway type AKA 243. AKA 243 and AKA 244 are identical
as regards functions, but the connections are not the same. It is
only to AKA 243 that EKC controllers can be connected (60 EKC
controllers and 60 AKC controllers).

list. Only accepted alarms will be deleted from the list when
the time is up. This time-limit also applies to the contents of the
event register AKM Event Log.
Printouts
1 Defi ne whether printouts of alarms must be made by the printer
when the alarms are received.
2 Defi ne whether a printout should be made when an alarm is
accepted.
3 Defi ne whether a printout will be required when a setpoint is
changed for a controller (when the change takes place from the
programme).
4 Defi ne whether the printer is to provide a printout when the
programme is started and at Logon and Logoff .
5 Key in how many empty lines there are to be between the
printer’s individual printouts. (This will require that a “Generic
printer driver” is installed, cf. page 8. The function can however
not be used in connection with control systems Windows 2000
and XP).
Log
1 The “Use callback must be used, if the log function in the
programme is to collect log data from an AKA 243/244 master
gateway via the telephone network. The programme calls
the system, and then immediately interrupts the telephone
connection. A call is now made by the system which consequ-
ently pays for the data transmission.
2 The “Form feed before auto prn function is used, if the log
printout is to start on a new page when log data are printed
automatically.
(If an alarm has started between two log printouts, the alarm
message and the log printouts can be kept on separate pages).

specially trained persons. In the display shown assistance can be
obtained by pushing the “?” key.
Uploading of logs
Normally transfer of logs takes place automatically when the
amount of data reaches a certain size. But if you prefer to
have transfers of logged data carried out at a specifi ed time,
whatever the amount of them, you must set this function.
Set, for example, a weekday and time outside of normal
working hours when the telephone rates may be lower.
Any later changes in the “AKM Setup” menu can be made via:
“Confi guration” - “AKM Setup....
The programme has now been installed on your PC.

First time the programme is started
Start-up
The PC must be restarted (booted) when the installation has been
completed.
The programme can now be started in one of the following two
ways:
- Automatic start-up (selected during the installation).
- Start-up from Windows:.
When the programme is started the fi rst time, settings must be
made for the supplied screen saver.
- Defi ne whether the screen saver is always to be activated when
the programme is started. Or whether it should only happen
when the programme is waiting for a “Logon. The screen saver
can be cancelled by meas of the "AKM Setup - Advanced"
- Set the time that is to elapse before the screen saver is activated.
The following display will now appear:
Warning! Do not use the “ENTER” key until all the fi elds have been
lled in.
The display only appears once during the installation. After that, it
is not possible to make settings or changes.
Please fi ll in all the fi elds. The information may be required when
service has to be carried out at a later date.
In the example above it is indicated which information may be
provided at the given positions.
When the programme has been started, proceed by keying in
initials and keywords.
A user with the initials AKM1 and keyword AKM1 has now been
establis hed. Use it for the establishment of a new superuser
having access to all functions.
Delete the AKM1” user when general access to the system is no
longer required.
Printer selection
If a matrix printer is to print the alarms, it would be a good idea to
install a special printer driver, so that the paper consumption will
be reduced. Do as follows:
Windows 95/98
(The function cannot be used in connection with control systems
Windows 2000 and XP).
Install the driver via "Start" - "Settings" - Printers"
Activate the Add printer icon and follow the instructions on the
display. When you have to select the printer, select “Generic / text
only.
When the printer has been installed, the following settings must
be made before it will work correctly:
- The icon for the “Generic / text only” printer is activated by means
of “Start - “Settings - “Printers.
- Push the right mouse key and select “Properties”.
- Select the “Device option” tab.
- In the “On screen setting, select line “128”.
- Push tabulator key, so that the cursor is placed in the “On printer”
eld.
- Keep the Alt key depressed while keying 012.
- When you subsequently release the Alt key, “^L will appear in
the fi eld.
- Terminate this setting with “Ok.
- Now add two lines in the Win.ini” le.
Open the fi le via one of the text programmes and add the
following two lines at the bottom of the document:
[Generic / text only]
PageBreak=No
-Save the Win.ini” le.
The installation has now been completed, and the printer driver
can be used by the AKM programme.
Useful hints
You may use the following information about printer drivers for
the printout of alarms, log curves and log tables, respectively:
1: Printer driver “Generic / Text only must be left as “Standard
printer” when alarms have to be printed from the programme.
(On page 6 you set how many lines there are to be between
two printouts).
2: For the printout of log curves use a graphics printer. The printers
own printer driver can often be used. In a few cases, on matrix
printers, a better result may be obtained by using the “IBM
Graphics” printer driver.

Router lines
General
Router lines have to be set before the programme will be able to
exchange data with other units. On page 6 and 7 router lines were
set, when the AKM programme was to transmit to other units.
But router lines must also be set in all gateways.
Principle
"How the programme and the gateway get to know each other"
Shown below is an example where the system consists of a
number of AKC controllers, one PC gateway type AKA 241 and one
modem gateway type AKA 244.
This system consists of two groups, each one of which is assigned
a network number:
The PC is assigned network number 240.
The AKC controllers and AKA 241 are assigned network number
241.
Each component within each network must now be given an
address:
The PC is assigned address number 124.
AKA 241 must have address number 125 as it is the master of this
network.
AKA 241 is assigned address number 120.
Each of the remaining controllers is given an address between 2
and 119.
When we mention a component’s location below, we use the term
system address, where the system address contains a network
number as well as an address number, i.e. system address =
network number : address number.
e.g. the system address for the PC is for example 240:124.
and the system address for the master gateway is 241:125.
Net 241
Net 240
241:120
240:124
241:125
(The master gateway will itself assign a network number to the
AKC controllers).
When the system addresses have been defi ned, settings can be
made in the programme as well as in the two gateways.
Procedure
1 During the installation described on page 6 the system address
was set.
2 If TCP/IP servers are used they must be readied and set. This is
described in Appendix 1.
3 How to create contact to a gateway
It is a bit diffi cult here to describe a general setup of the plant
because there are various ways of putting the plant together.
The following section contains very general instructions, but
you can also obtain help in Appendix 2 where there are several
examples of systems with belonging router lines.
a. Setting of system address
Connect a control panel type AKA 21 to “network number
241”.
Both gateways have been asigned address number 125 by
the factor, but it may have been changed.
Now use the control panel for making settings in this gateway.
Cf. also the gateway manual which contains a list of menus.
(Put voltage to one gateway at a time, or you will be in
trouble).
For the mentioned example set:
AKA 241: AKA 244:
Network to 241 Network to 241
and and
Address to 120 Address to 125
b. AKA 244 has to be set, so that it functions as a modem gate-
way.

c. Setting of router lines
Lines have to be set in both gateways, each one of which
contains information as to which system addresses have been
assigned to which outputs.
For the mentioned example set:
Line 1 Line 1
Lower limit to 241 Lower limit to 241
Upper limit to 241 Upper limit to 241
Port no. to 1 Port no. to 1
and and
Address to 0 Address to 0
(Address must however
be set to 125, if AKA 243
is used instead of AKA 244).
Line 2 Line 2
Lower limit to 240 Lower limit to 240
Upper limit to 240 Upper limit to 240
and Port no. to 1
Port no. to 2 and
Address to 120
Line 3 Line 3
Lower limit to 1 Lower limit to 1
Upper limit to 239 Upper limit to 239
Port no. to 1 Port no. to 2
and and
Address to 125 Telephone Number
d. Terminate
Activate the "BOOT GATEWAY" display under the NCP
menu (via AKA 21). Wait one minute, and do not push the
buttons on AKA 21 during this minute. (The new settings
will now be active).
4. The programme now communicates with the network.
When you leave this section contact has been established be-
tween all units of the plant, and the AKM programme is now ready
to be told which controllers have been connected.
AKM5 with several channels
The router line is set up in the same way here.
But the two networks are directed to two diff erent channels (Com
Port).

Principle
A controller is defi ned with a code number and a software version.
This controller contains a number of data, e.g. with English text.
When the programme has just been installed, it does not know
the controllers that have been connected - but the master at
address 125 possesses this information. The information will
be transferred to the programme when the function “Upload
confi guration” is used. The programme will fi rst have a look at
a defi ned network (the network number must be entered and
the network confi guration selected). A network confi guration
is always obtained from address 125 (the master gateway).
From here the programme loads infor mation about the controllers
(code number and software version) found in this network and
the addresses assigned to them. This setup is now stored in the
programme.
The programme must now pick up all the texts pertaining to the
measurement values and settings for each controller type. AKC
31M texts must be obtained from the CD-ROM accompanying the
programme, and other texts from other AKC controllers from the
data commuica tion. When this has been accomplished, you have
obtained one standard description fi le for each controller type
and for the software version found in the network.
(“Upload confi guration” is performed by selecting the fi eld AKC
description”).
Only now will the programme recognise all the possible settings
and readouts.
It may be helpful to add a name (ID) and a customer-adapted
choice of functions (Custom fi le).
The “MCB” eld is for your information only, and so is the “Master
Control” function.
This is how the programme will get to
know the individual controllers
Procedure
Now that the system is able to communicate, an upload may be
made (Upload confi guration) of the individual controllers’ texts.
1. If an AKC 31M unit has been installed, a description fi le must
be obtained from the supplied CD-ROM. Find this display via
“Confi guration - “Import description fi le”.
Import one or more of the shown fi les.
If other description fi les are available from an earlier setup,
they must also be imported now.
2. Select the language version in the remaining connected AKC
and EKC controllers. Use AKA 21 for setting the language ver-
sion in the AKC controllers whenever possible.
3. Find this display via “Confi guration - “Upload”.
4. Enter network number under “Network”.
5. Select “Net confi guration”.
6. Select AKC description.
7. Push “OK” (this function may last a couple of minutes).
If the master gateway has been installed in such a way that a
pass-word is required, the password will be asked for at this
point. Enter the password, before you continue.

Resume
- The programme is now installed.
- There is communication with the gateway (with the address
xxx:125) which in turn communi cates with the individual con-
trollers.
- The controller texts and parameters are known by the pro-
gramme, so that the programme knows the settings and read-
outs that can be made.
- The next step is to defi ne how these settings and readouts are to
be presented.
- Proceed with the “Setup instructions” document, or if you are an
experienced user, with the individual points found in the AKM
Manuel.
8. Store the loaded confi guration. Push Yes”.
All the texts from the various controller types will now be
loaded, and it will take several minutes for each type to be
loaded. In the “Information eld you can see the types that are
being obtained.
Later, when the programme has fi nished obtaining texts from the
various controllers, all the texts will be known by the programme,
and you may now proceed with a setup of the required
measurements.

Introduction
Principle
Supermarket chains in some cases etablish their own data com-
munication network VPN (Virtual Private Network) where they
transmit their information.
If ADAP-KOOL
®
refrigeration controls are used in this chain it would
be desirable that ADAP-KOOL
®
also use this network when infor-
mation has to be transmitted from the shops to a common service
centre.
Comparison: the function and the setup are in principle the same
as when it is a modem that has to transmit the information. In this
case the modem has been replaced by a server, and the telephone
network by a closed data network.
As shown, access to LAN can also take place via the PC's net card
and the WinSock interface in Windows. (A setup of this function in
AKM is described in the section "Installation of the programme on
the PC". A setup in AK Monitor is described in section 4).
This appendix describes how the setup of the server must be
made. The server is either a Digi One or Lantronix MSS. Other
server types cannot be used at the moment.
Before the server can be used, an IP address must be set and a
setup fi le installed in it.
Take care to set the correct address. It may be diffi cult to correct it
at a later date.
All servers must be made ready before further setup can be
performed.
• Procure IP addresses from the district’s IT department.
Setting of addresses
1. Connect the server to the PC with the specifi ed cable
2. Connect supply voltage to the server
3. Switch on the PC
4. Start the AKM programme
5. Open the “Confi guration/AKM Setup/Port Setup” menu
6. Select line TCP/IP
7. Select COM port to be used
8. Keep baud rate at 9600
9. a. Set IP address
b. Set IP-GW address
c. Set Subnet Mask
10. Check the addresses - particularly the IP address / write it down
/ glue it to the server! / DO IT NOW!!
11. Push OK - the set addresses will now be sent to the server
Confi guration of server (Lantronix MSS only. DigiOne is set from
factory).
Confi guration can only take place when the MSS server has had its
IP address set, as described above.
1. Reopen the earlier “Confi guration/AKM Setup/Port Setup” menu
2. Select fi le “MSS_.CFG”
3. Push “Download” (information can be followed in the MSS-COM
window)
4. Finish with OK
The MSS server is now ready and can be dismounted from the PC if
it is to be used in conjunction with an AKA 243 or AKA 244.
1. Setup of TCP/IP Device Server
Baud rate:
Keep the setting at 9600 baud until the whole system is in place and com-
municates as expected. The setting may subsequently be changed to, say,
38400 baud.
Requirements
- Digi One or Lantronix MSS_
- AKA 243/AKA 244 must be
version 5.3 or newer
- AKM must be version 5.3 or
newer
- AKM can max. handle 250
networks

The supply voltage to the server to be connected, as illustrated
(via DO1 on AKA 243/AKA 244).
AKA 243/AKA 244 can then reset the server. The server will also be
switched on and the start-up controlled when AKA 243/AKA 244 is
switched on.
Data communication between AKA 243/AKA 244 and the server to
be made with the specifi ed cable.
PC
Connection to a PC to be made as described in section 1 above.
RS232 port
Baud rate
Keep the setting at 9600 until the whole communication functions
correctly. It may subsequently be raised to 38400.
Addresses
Set the addresses that have been set in the connected TCP/IP
server (IP address, IP-GW address and Subnet Mask).
Keep the remaining settings unchanged, but check one character
in ”Initiate string”. At Digi One it should read ”..Q3….
At MSS it should read ”…Q0…..
DANBUSS port
See AKM Manual.
AKA 243 / AKA 244
Select the AKA setup in AKM.
Router lines must be set as indicated in the AKM Manual. When
there is a network at another server, the servers IP address must
be set. (Like for modem. Just set an IP address instead of a tel-
ephone number).
AKM
Select the AKM setup in AKM.
Router lines to be set as mentioned earlier.
Remember to select TCP/IP in "Channel" and type in "Initiate", if a
server is connected to the Com port.
ALTERNATIVELY, select WinSock in "Channel" and nothing in "Initi-
ate", if connection takes place via the net card.

5. Speed
Later, when the communication functions satisfactorily, you may
raise the speed of all relevant TCP/IP servers to, say, 38400 baud.
Things to be considered during installation
An unintentional action may produce the result that the data com-
munication fails.
The AKM programme constantly checks that there is contact to the
server connected to the PC.
By using the AKM programmes Scan function it can likewise be
checked whether the connection to the plant’s gateway is intact.
Scan for time, for example.
AK Monitor
If AK Monitor has a direct connection to LAN via the net card, this
must be defi ned in AK Monitor. Select channels for WinSock.
Set IP addresses in the system's TCP/IP gateway.

Router lines
Principle
Router lines describe the “paths” information has to pass through. A message with information may be compared with a letter where
the recipient’s name is written on the envelope and the sender’s name inside the envelope together with the information.
When such a letter appears in the system,
there is only one thing to do - check its destination.
And there are only three possibilities:
- Either it is destined for the holder himself
- or it has to be rerouted through one port
- or it has to be rerouted through the other port.
This is how the “letter moves on from one intermediate station to another, until it fi nally ends up with the receiver. The receiver
will now do two things, namely acknowledge receipt of the “letter and act on the information contained in the letter”. The
acknowledgement is then another new “letter appearing in the system.
To ensure that the letters are sent in the right directions, it is necessary to defi ne all the directions used in all intermediate stations.
Remember, there will also be acknowledgements.
Receivers
All receivers (and transmitters) are defi ned with a unique system address made up of two numbers, e.g. 005:071 or 005:125. The
rst number may be compared with a street address in the normal postal system, and the second number will then be the house
number. (The two examples shown are two houses on the same street).
In this system all the controllers also have a unique system address.
The fi rst number indicates a network, and the other a controller.
There may be up to 255 networks, and there may be as many as
125 controllers on each network (number 124 must however not be
used).
Number 125 is special. This is the number with which you defi ne a
master on the network (this master contains important settings with
respect to alarm handling, among other things).
When there are several networks, the connection between the
various networks will always be a gateway.
In the same network there may often be several gateways, e.g. a
modem gateway and a PC gateway.
It is in all these gateways the various router lines have to be defi ned.
How?
Ask yourself three questions and answer them!
- Which network?
- Which direction?
- For which address (a telephone number if it is for a modem), (an 0, if it is for your own network*), (nothing, if it is for a PC).
