This manual describes the installation and operating procedures for the American Dynamics model AD1416 and AD1416L
Sequential Switchers. The AD1416 and AD1416L are 16-position sequential video switchers with automatic alarm callup and
two video outputs. One video output provides the sequence of selected video inputs, interrupted during operator Holds and
system Alarms. The second video output provides the continuous sequence of inputs without interruptions, thus permitting
continuous viewing or recording of camera inputs.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The AD1416 and AD1416L are 16-position sequential video
switchers with automatic alarm callup and two video outputs.
One video output provides the sequence of selected video
inputs, interrupted (blank) during operator Holds and system
Alarms. The second video output provides the continuous
sequence of inputs without interruptions, thus permitting
continuous viewing or recording of camera inputs. The second
output may be set to provide output only during system Alarms
(see SETUP, page 2).
Dwell times for cameras in sequence operations are
individually adjustable in 1-second steps from 2 to 70 seconds.
Any or all cameras may be included in the sequence.
Models with terminated inputs (AD1416) and models with
looping inputs (AD1416L) are available. Two switchers may
be cascaded together to provide for a 32-position switcher.
Auto, Off, and Manual alarm modes are selectable. The Auto
mode follows the Alarm Input status. The Manual mode holds
alarms until manually cleared by a pushbutton. Both modes
sequence multiple alarms. Form C Alarm contacts are
available to control a VCR or other alarm device. An audible
alarm beeper can be deactivated. Logic-level outputs of the
on-screen camera number and alarm status are available for
use with system display panels, computer controls, etc.

INSTALLATION
This installation should be made by qualified service personnel
and should conform to all local codes. Safeguards must be
taken to avoid unintentional operation by employees and
maintenance personnel working about the premises, by falling
objects, by customers, by building vibration, and by similar
causes.
Mounting
Both desktop and rack mount models are available (Models for
rack mounting are identified by an R following the model
number). Mount in a convenient location near associated
monitors. Avoid heat sources or poorly ventilated racks.

SETUP
Alarm-only Sequencing on Output B
As shipped, MONITOR output B provides a continuous
sequence of the video inputs. To set up the unit such that
output B shows the sequence only during alarms, and is
otherwise blank, Jumper J45 on the main printed circuit board
(PCB) must be removed, as follows:
1. Turn unit off and unplug from power source.
2. Remove screws for top cover, and remove the top
cover.
3. Remove jumper J45, located near the middle of the
main PCB. See Figure 2, page 3, for location of J45.
4. Reattach top cover.
Audio Alarm Beeper
As shipped, the audio alarm beeper is activated during alarms.
To deactivate the beeper, remove Jumper J46, located near the
side of the printed circuit board. See Figure 2, page 3, for the
location of jumper J46. Follow the procedures outlined above
for access to the main PCB for removing this jumper.
Cascading Setup
Two switchers may be cascaded together to provide for a 32
position switcher, as described in Cascading Connections, page
4. As shipped, the first switch position of DIP switch S22 is
set for non-cascaded operation. It must be reset for cascaded
operation, as shown in the following paragraph.
On-Screen Camera Numbers
On-screen camera numbers displayed by the switcher may be
set to provide for any block of 16 camera numbers, from 1 to
512. A six-position DIP switch (S22) located on the main PCB
of the switcher is used to set the 16-camera block of on-screen
camera numbers. As shipped, all units are set for camera block
1-16. Table 1, DIP Switch S22 Camera Block Settings, shows
the correct setting of the DIP switch positions for other camera
number blocks.
Follow the procedures outlined for Alarm-only Sequencing
above for access to the main PCB to set this DIP switch. See
Figure 2, page 3 for location of DIP switch S22.

CONNECTIONS
Video Inputs
The AD1416 has 16 CAMERA input BNC connectors with
75-ohm terminations. The AD1416L model has 32 paired
CAMERA BNC connectors, of which 16 are for video inputs
and 16 are for passive looping outputs. If any video input is
not looped through the AD1416L to other units, a 75-ohm
BNC terminator must be connected to the matching connector.
The video input connected to Input 1 has an on-screen
designation 1; the video connected to Input 2, the on-screen
designation 2, etc. Use a good grade of 75-ohm cable with
BNC connectors.
Video Outputs
Two MONITOR video output BNC connectors are provided.
Output A is the camera video sequence interrupted by holds
and alarms. Output B provides output of continuous
sequencing of the cameras, unless altered by the initial setup as
shown on page 2. Each output must be terminated in 75 ohms.
Use a good grade of 75-ohm cable with BNC connectors.
Alarm Inputs
Alarm signals are provided by closures to ground on the 20-pin
Alarm connector, J1, located on the rear panel. A mating plug
is supplied. Table 2 shows the Alarm Connector Pinouts.

Cascading Connections
Two switchers may be cascaded together to provide 32-input
switching. An 8-pin modular phone jack, J3, is provided on
the rear panel of each switcher for cascading. Connect these jacks
using 8-pin modular phone plugs with pin-to-pin connections.
For cascade operation, order Kit AD1416CK which contains a
communication cable and panel labels for cameras 17 through 32.
The lower of the two BNC connectors for each MONITOR
output is used for cascading video. Connect Output A of the
master unit to Output A of the slave unit and Output B of the
master unit to Output B of the slave unit using a good grade of
75-ohm cable with BNC connectors. Either or both of the
upper sets of MONITOR output BNC connectors may be used
for display of Outputs A and B.
Auxiliary Inputs/Outputs
Connections for other signal inputs and outputs are provided
by the 12-pin connector, J2, on the rear panel. A mating plug
is supplied. Table 3 shows the Auxiliary Connector Pinouts.

Note: Use Class 2 wiring only for auxiliary connections.
The Camera ID pins provide the 4-bit binary equivalent of the
on-screen camera number for use with system display panels,
computerized system controls, etc. Logic high (5.0 V) is 1.
Logic low (0.7 V) is 0. Camera ID 0 is the low bit.
The Logic Out pin provides a logic-level output of the alarm
status. It is high (5.0 V) while no alarms are present and low
(0.7 V) while alarms are present.
The Relay pins (Normally Open, Normally Closed) provide
access to isolated, Form C, SPDT contacts which are activated
while an alarm is present. They can be used to actuate a user-
supplied VCR or alarm devices. These contacts are rated at:
Voltage - 100 mv minimum, 24VAC maximum.
Current - 100 ua minimum, 1 amp maximum.
The Tape pin accepts a negative 4 to 8 Vp-p, 0.4 millisecond
synchronizing pulse, for frame locked switching or recording,
from a Time Lapse VCR or from another external source.
Power Connection
Depending on the model, the AD1416/AD1416L operates with
either 120 VAC or 230 VAC. This unit is shipped with a
pendant cord for use with an electrical outlet. Insert the
appended 3-wire cord and plug in the required power source.

AD1416/X, AD1416L/X - 230 VAC, 50/60 Hz.

OPERATION
Front Panel Controls
All controls are on the front panel of both models, and are
identical in operation for both models, see Figure 1, page 1.
POWER ON/OFF Rocker Switch
When On ("1" part of switch depressed), the red indicator is
visible. The switcher is now operative.
DWELL Switch
This momentary lever switch increments or decrements the
dwell time for each individual camera. To select a camera for
dwell time adjustment, momentarily depress the associated
camera select switch (below) to HOLD. The DWELL switch
is then used to change that camera's dwell time.
Pushing the switch lever up increments the dwell time of the
camera in 1-second steps from 2 to 70 seconds. Pushing the
switch down decrements the dwell time similarly. The current
dwell time is shown in the on-screen display while the lever is
pushed. The initial (turn-on) dwell time is 2 seconds.
MOVE Switch
This momentary lever switch changes the position of the on-
screen image for each individual camera, when that camera is
in a HOLD. To select a camera for on-screen display
adjustment, momentarily depress the associated camera select
switch (below) to HOLD.
Pressing this momentary switch up (H), changes the location of
the on-screen display horizontally in 29 steps. Depressing the
switch (V) changes the position vertically in 26 steps.
Note: All on-screen display and associated dwell times are
battery-backed in case of power failure.
CAMERA Switches
Sixteen 3-position lever switches provide selection control of
the camera inputs. The switch number corresponds to the
camera connector number on the rear panel. These switches
perform the following camera controls:
AUTO - includes selected camera in sequence.
SKIP - excludes selected camera from sequence.
HOLD - holds selected camera on Output A (from RUN
mode).
EXTERNAL ALERT AUTO/OFF/MAN Switch
This 3-position lever switch selects one of three alarm
operating modes for the unit. These modes are:
AUTO - Cameras called by alarm inputs are held on
Output A for 10 seconds. If the alarm is still active after
10 seconds, the hold continues until the alarm clears. If
the alarm has cleared during the 10 seconds, Output A
reverts to the RUN or HOLD mode which was present
prior to the alarm. Multiple alarms are sequenced at the
established dwell time. The Auxiliary Start contacts are
activated while alarms are held and no switching occurs.
OFF - Blocks alert override. Beeper sounds (if activated)
and RUN pushbutton flashes to alarm operator to the
presence of alarms.
MAN - Cameras called by alarm inputs are displayed on
Output A until acknowledged (cleared) by depressing
the RUN button. Multiple alarms are sequenced until
acknowledged. When all alarms are acknowledged,
Output A reverts to the RUN or HOLD mode which was
present prior to the alarm. The Auxiliary Start contacts
are activated while alarms are held.
RUN Pushbutton
This momentary pushbutton has the following functions:
With Alert Switch on OFF (or on MAN or AUTO with no
alarms present) and a camera held on Output A, pressing
this button starts RUN mode (sequencing) on Output A.
When this button is held in, the unit sequences quickly
through the cameras selected ("Quick-Look").
With Alert Switch on AUTO and alarms present, pressing
this pushbutton has no effect.
With Alert Switch on MAN and one or more alarms being
displayed on Output A, pressing this pushbutton
acknowledges (clears) the on-screen alarm. When all
alarms have been acknowledged, the switcher returns to the
previous state present prior to the alarms.
While no alarms are present, the pushbutton is lit continuously
when in the RUN mode and unlit when a camera is being held.
It always flashes while alarms are present.
On-Screen Display
The on-screen camera number is displayed in white characters
at all times. An "H" or "A" is appended when the camera is
manually held or being called by an alarm. The dwell time is
momentarily displayed while being adjusted. The on-screen
position of each camera's display is individually adjustable.
