Introduction
This chapter describes selecting and using various media types and
sizes and provides suggestions for creating high quality output on
various media.
Media Specifications
To ensure that your job prints correctly, always use appropriate
media. Store and handle it carefully to prevent damage to the media
and printer. This section provides guidelines for selecting media and
describes media types and sizes for use with your printer.
Caution: Your XANTÉ printer was designed to print on a variety of
media types, however, continually printing on any media
except plain paper (for example envelopes, coated stock,
labels, thick stock, transfer media, or transparencies) may
reduce print quality and/or engine life.
Guidelines for Selecting and Storing Media
This section covers XANTÉ guaranteed media as well as media
selection and storage.
XANTÉ Myriad 2 Media
XANTÉ guarantees optimized output from all Myriad 2 media which
has been tested on XANTÉ ColourLaser printers. Use Myriad 2
Professional Print Media to ensure maximum warranty support for
your printer. Contact XANTÉ or your XANTÉ vendor for details.
Myriad 2 laser grade media includes glossy presentation paper, vinyl,
transparencies, and heat transfer paper. Whatever you printing needs,
XANTÉ has the perfect media for your printer to provide superior
output.
Myriad 2 LaserGloss Paper
ensures the highest quality output for proofs and presentations.
Use the custom profiles included with your printer with this
paper to produce rich, vibrant color output.

Myriad 2 Laser Vinyl
provides the best coating for laser printing to create indoor or
outdoor, waterproof, tear-resistant signs and labels for heavy-
duty, long-term durability.
Myriad 2 Overhead Transparencies

presentations. Use the custom profiles included with the printer

Selecting Media
To prevent jams and print quality problems when selecting media for
your printer, use media that
can withstand a temperature of 392˚ F (200˚ C). Label adhesive
and preprinted inks, such as letterhead, that cannot withstand
these temperatures can damage the printers fusing rollers
permanently.

is unusually thick, thin, wrinkled, torn, curled, creased, wet,
damp, or otherwise damaged.

Caution: Using media that does not meet these guidelines may
void your printer warranty. XANTÉ is not responsible

Storing Media
To prevent media damage, store media

in small, flat stacks (not on its side or end).
in its original wrapper in a location with a temperature range
from 50 to 86˚ F (10to 30˚ C) and a stable relative humidity
from 30 to 65%.
in a dark area; do not expose it to direct sunlight.
Media Sizes
Your printer allows you to use media from sizes as small as 4.1" x
9.5" (105 mm x 241 mm) and 4.3" x 8.7" (110 mm x 220 mm) up to
13.00" x 19.00" (330 mm x 483 mm).
Imageable Area
Physical page size is different from the imageable area. The portion of a
physical page on which the printer can lay down toner is the imageable
area. The following chart lists imageable areas produced by the XANTÉ
ColourLaser printer for standard media sizes.

Set page margins in your applications to fit within the imageable
areas. If you try to print outside the imageable area, many
applications issue a warning message, giving you an opportunity to
make changes; some applications, however, clip the image and print
the page.
Media Types
Your printer supports plain paper, coverstock, transparencies, and
labels with weights from 16 - 43 lb bond (60 - 157 g/m
2
). Specifics
for printing on these various media types are covered later in this
chapter.
Media used in your printer should meet the guidelines for selecting and
storing media covered earlier in this chapter. To save on media costs,
test a sample of new media before buying in quantity. Run a test
print on plain paper to check layout and alignment before using more
expensive stock.
XANTÉ preset media defaults are the recommended settings for media.
These settings should be used unless you run into a problem. Select the
media under the front panel MEDIA: MEDIA TYPE configuration
menu. For menu details, see chapter 6, Configuration.

XANTÉ recommends that you use Myriad 2 professional printing
media which has been tested with the XANTÉ ColourLaser printers.
XANTÉ guarantees optimized output from all Myriad 2 media.
Media Handling
This section describes available options for feeding media to the printer.
It summarizes the media path and covers using the paper cassettes, the
optional paper feeders, and optional duplexer.

Media Sources
The XANTÉ ColourLaser printer is equipped with a built-in paper
cassette feeder, which provides an input capacity of approximately
250 sheets of standard 20 lb bond (75 g/m
2
) paper or to a stack height
of 1.06 inches (27 mm).
Optional paper feeders can be added to increase your printers input
capacity. Each of these feeders supports a 500-sheet standard
cassette. All media sources can be used to increase the capacity for a
single media size with the tray chaining option or as sources for
different sizes or types of media.
Optional Paper Feeders
You can add up to two optional paper cassette feeders to your printer
to increase input capacity for standard paper to approximately 1,250
sheets. See chapter 10 for installation instructions. See chapter 2 for
instructions on loading the paper cassette.
Paper Cassettes
The standard cassette included with the printer handles paper sizes
from as small as 4.1" x 9.5" (105 mm x 241 mm) and 4.3" x 8.7"
(110 mm x 220 mm) up to 13.00" x 19.00" (330 mm x 483 mm) and
paper weights from 16 - 43 lb bond (60 - 163 g/m
2
). For 20 lb bond
(75 g/m
2
) paper, you can load 250 sheets of paper in the cassette that
ships with the printer or to a stack height of 1.06 inches (27 mm).
You can load 500 sheets of 20 lb bond (75 g/m
2
) paper or to a stack
height of 2.30" (58 mm) in an optional paper cassette.
The envelope adapter handles Com 10 and DL sized envelopes with
the same paper weight range as the universal cassette. You can load
approximately 15 envelopes in the envelope adapter.

Use the cassettes arrow tabs on the media length and width guides
to select the paper size in the cassette. Select the paper cassette or
tray chaining from your applications Print dialog box or the
printers front panel.
Loading Media
Select the appropriate cassette as the media source using the Print
dialog box in your application. Use tray chaining to pull paper from
all cassettes as long as all sources are loaded with and configured for
the same paper size.
Load envelopes short edge first in the envelope adapter. Load
envelopes flap closed to provide a flatter address area print surface.
Load media in the cassettes print side up, leading edge to the back of
the printer. Most media packages indicate the print side. When using
the duplexer, load media print side down with the top to the right
side of the cassette. Use the chart to determine alignment for
standard paper sizes in the universal cassette.

* The standard cassette feeds up to 250 sheets and handles plain paper,
coverstock, transparencies, envelopes, and labels. The upper and lower
feeders only handle paper and feed up to 500 sheets.
Tray Chaining
Tray chaining directs the printer to switch automatically to another
source for media when the current source is empty. You can chain to
all paper cassettes.
Use the following guidelines and the procedure in Tray Selection
Options in chapter 6 to use the tray chaining feature.
All selected media sources must contain the same size media. If
the printer detects a different size media when it switches to a
new tray, a PAPER OUT message appears.
All trays must be properly inserted. When tray chaining is
enabled, an incorrectly positioned tray will prevent the printer
from printing.
Duplex Printing
You can print double-sided copy manually by feeding paper through
the printer twice or automatically with the optional duplexer.

Manual Duplexing
You can print double-sided copy manually by feeding paper through
the printer twice.
1. Print the first side of the paper.
2. Remove the paper from the output tray, straighten any curling
edges, and allow it to cool thoroughly.
3. Load the paper using the following guidelines:
a. Determine whether to load the media with the short or long
edge first. See Loading Media earlier in this chapter.
b. Print a test page or check your software documentation
to determine the orientation of the medias top edge.
c. Load media into the universal cassette blank side up.
4. Print the second side.
Optional Duplexer
The optional duplexer allows you to print double-sided copy
automatically, rather than by feeding pages manually.
Guidelines for Using the Duplexer
Follow these guidelines when using the duplexer to prevent paper
jams and ensure the highest quality output.
Use the duplexer for A3, A4, B4, letter, legal, and tabloid size
16-28 lb bond (60-105 g/m
2
) paper.
Do not use the duplexer for media other than paper
Do not use the duplexer for A5, B5, executive, or oversized
(larger than 11.00" x 17" [279 mm x 432 mm]) paper.
Load media print side down with the top to the right side of the
cassette.

Avoid using recycled paper in the duplexer. Recycled paper may
absorb moisture which can cause the paper to wrinkle or fold.
This can result in paper jams.
Verify that your printer has the necessary RAM for duplexing.
RAM requirements depend on the paper size and printing
resolution. See Printer Memory Requirements in chapter 9.
Duplexer in chapter 10 covers installing the duplexer.
Envelope Printing
The XANTÉ ColourLaser ships with an envelope adapter which can
be inserted in the universal cassette for printing envelopes.
Installing and Removing the Envelope
Adapter
Use the envelope adapter to print envelopes. Install and remove the
adapter using the following procedures.
Installing the Envelope Adapter
1. Remove the paper cassette from the printer.
Note: Only the standard cassette can be used when printing
envelopes.
2. Remove any paper in the cassette.

3. Center the adapter (left and right) over the cassette base with
the back of the adapter perpendicular to the back edge of the
cassette (fig. 7.2 ). The tabs on the right and left side of the
leading edge of the adapter should be behind the edge of the
cassette base (fig. 7.2). Lower the adapter straight down onto
the cassette.

4. Move the cassette's width guides in to secure the adapter in
place (fig. 7.3).

5. Move the cassette's length guide to the appropriate location for
the desired envelope size (fig. 7.4).

6. Adjust the adapter's media guides for the desired envelope size
by holding the adapter in place with one hand and sliding the
adapter's media guides forward or backward (fig. 7.4).
7. Load the envelopes in the adapter print side up, short edge
first. See Guidelines for Printing Envelopes later in the
chapter for details.
8. Insert the paper cassette in the printer.
Removing the Envelope Adapter
1. Remove the paper cassette from the printer.
2. Move the cassette's media guides away from the adapter's base
in order to release it.
3. Lift the adapter straight up and out to remove it (fig. 7.5).

4. Reinstall the paper cassette in the printer.
Guidelines for Printing Envelopes
Use the envelope adapter with the standard cassette and follow
procedures in Paper Cassette in chapter 2 and these guidelines
when printing envelopes.
Make sure envelopes meet the requirements in Guidelines for
Selecting and Storing Media earlier in this chapter.
Format envelopes in your application and run a plain paper test
print to check layout and alignment before running on more
expensive envelopes.
Do not use gummed envelopes or envelopes with adhesive tape.
Before loading the envelope, place it on a flat surface and press it
smooth to make the corners and folds as flat as possible.
Feed envelopes print side up, short edge first.

Do not overload the envelope adapter. The adapter holds up to
15 envelopes, depending on media weight, size, and type.
Overloaded envelopes can expand as they feed into the printer,
causing jams.
Load envelopes flap closed in the envelope adapter.
Open the flap of each envelope as soon as it is printed to prevent
it from sealing due to the heat of the rollers.
Coated Stock Printing
Always use the standard upper cassette and follow these guidelines
when printing coated stock.
Make sure coated stock meets the requirements in Guidelines
for Selecting and Storing Media earlier in this chapter.
Format coated stock in your application and run a plain paper
test print to check layout and alignment before running on more
expensive coated stock.
Avoid handling coated stock excessively to prevent fingerprints
and scratches.
Keep the paper path clean (see chapter 9); dust or dirt can scratch
coated stock and reduce print quality.
Load fewer sheets of coated stock if jams occur. The weight of a
stack of coated stock could cause the sheets to stick together.
Remove each sheet as it is printed to help prevent static buildup.
Do not fan coated stock. This causes static buildup which can
cause jams.
Label Printing
Always use the standard upper cassette and follow these guidelines
when printing labels.

Make sure label stock meets the requirements in Guidelines for
Selecting and Storing Media earlier in this chapter.
Load up to 50 sheets of labels or to a stack height of 5/8" (16
mm) in the standard paper cassette.
Format labels in your application and run a plain paper test print
to check layout and alignment before running on more expensive
label stock.
Do not overload the label stock. Label sheets compressed by the
weight of the stack will expand as they feed into the printer
which can cause a jam.
Make sure labels are not curled on the corners or coming loose
from the backing sheet.
Use only labels that are rated as laser safe. Do not use label
sheets with exposed adhesives (such as partially used sheets or
sheets on which adhesive has seeped through to the surface).
Coverstock Printing
Always use the standard upper cassette and follow these guidelines
when printing labels.
Make sure coverstock meets the requirements in Guidelines for
Selecting and Storing Media earlier in this chapter.
Load up to 50 sheets of coverstock (depending on the stock's
thickness) in the standard paper cassette.
Format coverstock in your application and run a plain paper test
print to check layout and alignment before running on more
expensive coverstock.
Do not overfill the paper cassette. Use the guide on the inside
left of the cassette to determine the appropriate stack height.

Transfer Media Printing
Always use the standard upper cassette and follow these guidelines
when printing transfer media.
Make sure transfer media meets the requirements in Guidelines
for Selecting and Storing Media earlier in this chapter.
Load up to 50 sheets of transfer media (depending on the media's
thickness) in the standard paper cassette.
Format transfer media in your application and run a plain paper
test print to check layout and alignment before running on more
expensive transfer media.
Do not overfill the paper cassette. Use the guide on the inside
left of the cassette to determine the appropriate stack height.
Transparency Printing
Always use the standard upper cassette and follow these guidelines
when printing transparencies.
Make sure transparencies meet the requirements in Guidelines
for Selecting and Storing Media earlier in this chapter.
You can load up to 50 transparencies or to a stack height of 1/4"
(6 mm) in the standard paper cassette.
Format transparencies in your application and run a plain paper
test print to check layout and alignment before running on more
expensive transparencies.
Avoid handling transparencies excessively to prevent
fingerprints and scratches.
Keep the paper path clean (see chapter 9); dust or dirt can scratch
transparencies and reduce print quality.
Load no more than 50 transparencies in the paper cassette. The
weight of a stack of transparencies could cause the sheets to stick
together.

Remove each transparency as it is printed to help prevent static
