Tests and Adjustments
Steering Linkage Adjustments
See Figures 7-2 through 7-5.
IMPORTANT
The following adjustments must be performed in
sequence to ensure correct steering linkage
adjustment.
Tie Rod Adjustment
NOTE
2WD steering assembly is shown; 4WD steering
assembly is similar.
1. Park the mower safely. (See “Park Mower Safely” on
page 1-6.)
2. Turn the wheels to the straight-ahead position.

3. Measure the distance between the center lines of the
tires at the front (1) and rear (3) of the tires. The
measurement (toe-in) at the front of the tires should
be 0.030–0.090 in. (0.8–2.3 mm) less than the
distance at the rear of the tires. If the toe-in does not
meet specifications, adjust as follows:
a. Loosen the tie rod jam nuts (2 and 4) on both
sides of the tie rod (5).
b. Turn the tie rod (5) as needed to obtain proper
toe-in (1).
c. Retighten the tie rod jam nuts (2 and 4).
4. Proceed to “Turn Stop Adjustment” on page 7-4.
Turn Stop Adjustment
IMPORTANT
The steering linkage must be adjusted in proper
sequence. Do not perform this procedure until the tie
rod adjustment has been performed. (See “Tie Rod
Adjustment” on page 7-4.)
NOTE
2WD steering assembly is shown; 4WD steering
assembly is similar.
1. Park the mower safely. (See “Park Mower Safely” on
page 1-6.)
2. Turn steering wheel to the left until the steering
cylinder is completely extended.

3. Measure the gap (3) between the left steering arm
(5) and steering stop on the rear axle (4). The
measurement should be 0.030–0.090 in. (0.8–2.3
mm). If the measurement does not meet
specifications, adjust as follows:
a. Remove cotter pin (8).
b. Remove castle nut (9), and disengage steering
cylinder (1) from the right steering arm (10).
c. Loosen clamp bolt (6) and nut (7) on steering
cylinder (1).
d. Adjust (turn) ball joint (2) in or out as needed to
obtain proper distance. Tighten steering cylinder
clamp bolt (6) and nut (7).
e. Install steering cylinder (1) and castle nut (9).
Tighten castle nut to 80–110 lb-ft (108–149 N·m).
NOTE
Install cotter pin (8) after performing turning radius (equal
angle) adjustment.
4. Proceed to “Turning Radius (Equal Angle)
Adjustment” on page 7-5.
Turning Radius (Equal Angle) Adjustment
IMPORTANT
The steering linkage must be adjusted in proper
sequence. Do not perform this procedure until the tie
rod and turn stop adjustments have been performed.
(See “Tie Rod Adjustment” on page 7-4 and “Turn
Stop Adjustment” on page 7-4.)
NOTE
2WD steering assembly is shown; 4WD steering
assembly is similar.
1. Check the turning radius by driving the mower in a
circle in both a hard right and a hard left turn.
2. Measure the diameters of the tire track circles.
3. Park the mower safely. (See “Park Mower Safely” on
page 1-6.)
4. Turn the wheels to the straight-ahead position.
5. Check that ball joints are threaded equally into both
ends of steering cylinder.

6. Remove cotter pins (1 and 6) and castle nuts (2 and
7), and disengage steering cylinder (8) from the right
steering arm (12) and rear axle (9).
7. Loosen clamp bolts (4 and 10) and nuts (5 and 11)

IMPORTANT
Ensure turn stop gap of 0.030–0.090 in. (0.8–2.3 mm)
is maintained during turning radius (equal angle)
adjustment. Check and adjust turn stop gap as
necessary after performing any ball joint
adjustments. (See “Turn Stop Adjustment” on
page 7-4.)
8. Adjust (turn) ball joints (3 and 13) in or out equally as
needed. Tighten clamp bolts (4 and 10) and nuts (5
and 11).
9. Install steering cylinder (8) and castle nuts (2 and 7).
Tighten castle nuts to 80–110 lb-ft (108–149 N·m).
10. Check the turning radius in both directions.
11. Repeat steps 2 through 10 as needed until the
turning radius is equal in both directions.
12. Install new cotter pins (1 and 6).

(1) and ensure head of carriage bolts (2) just touch
steering tower cover on both sides as shown in
Figure 7-9. Adjust carriage bolts (2) and nuts (3) as

screws (5).

NOTE
If available, use a portable hydraulic filtering unit to
remove the hydraulic oil from the hydraulic tank. Place
the filtering unit suction hose in the tank, and pump the oil
into a clean and sealable container.
5. Using the tilt lever, tilt the steering column rearward.

ensure correct installation.

CAUTION
NOTES
• Before attempting repairs or disassembly of any
hydraulic components, thoroughly clean the
components and work area. A clean work area is
essential to satisfactory operation of repaired
hydraulic components.
• Utilize steering unit service fixture for disassembly.
(See “Steering Unit Service Fixture” on page 7-10.)
1. Scribe a line from port “P” to bottom of steering unit.
This line can be used to determine port “P” with end
cover removed and for proper orientation of sections
for assembly.
2. Remove three special screws (1), two special screws
(2), and five O-rings (3).
3. Remove end cover (4) by sliding it off to the side.
4. Remove cardan shaft spacer (5).
5. Hold a hand under the gearwheel rim (8) and
gearwheel (7) to keep the gearwheel from falling out,
and remove the gearwheel rim (8), gearwheel (7),
and two O-rings (6).
6. Remove cardan shaft (10).
7. Remove distributor plate (9).
8. Remove O-ring (11) from housing (24).
9. Remove spool assembly.
10. Remove thin bearing race (19), bearing (18), and
thick bearing race (17).
11. Remove shaft seal (20).
12. Remove spring retaining ring (15).
13. Carefully press cross pin (13) out of the spool (16)
and sleeve (12), and remove spool from sleeve.
14. Press spring set (14) out of spool (16).
15. Remove fixture from vise and shake out check valve
ball (21), emergency steering ball (23), and ball stop
(22). Re-secure service fixture in vise with input shaft
down.
16. Remove housing (24) from service fixture.
17. Remove steering relief valve (26) and steering relief
valve spring (27).

CAUTION
NOTES
• Inspect all parts for wear or damage and replace as
necessary.
• Lubricate all parts with clean hydraulic oil before
assembly.
• Always install new O-rings for assembly; used parts
may leak.
• Utilize steering unit service fixture for assembly. (See
“Steering Unit Service Fixture” on page 7-10.)
• Letter references (A-C) refer to components of Sauer
Danfoss Shaft Seal Tool.
1. Assemble relief valve (26 and 27) to housing (24).
Use new check valve o-ring included in seal kit.
2. Assemble shaft seal (20) onto guide (A).
3. Insert outer sleeve (B) into housing (24).
4. Place guide (A) on end of guide tool (C). Lubricate
shaft seal and O-ring.
5. Slide guide tool (C) into outer sleeve (B) and press
shaft seal into position. Remove outer sleeve and
guide tool. Guide (A) should remain inside housing
after seal is installed.
6. Install thin bearing race (19), bearing (18), and thick
bearing race (17) into housing (24).
7. Slide spool (16) into sleeve (12) and align so that
cross pin slots are adjacent to each other.
8. Center the spring set (14) in the spool and sleeve
assembly, and install spring retaining ring (15).
NOTES
• When installing spring set, insert the curved springs
between the flat springs and push in place.
• Spring retaining ring (15) must be able to rotate
unimpeded by the springs.
9. Press cross pin (13) in the spool and sleeve
assembly.
10. While holding the cross pin in place, guide the spool
and sleeve assembly into housing (23). When
installed, cross pin (12) must point towards port “P.”
Spool will push seal guide (A) out of housing as it is
installed.

11. Place emergency steering ball (23) in port “P.”
12. Place ball stop (22) in port “P.”
13. Place check valve ball (21) in port “P.”
14. Install O-ring (11) in housing (24).
15. Place distributor plate (9) on housing (24) and align
scribe line and mounting holes.
16. Assemble cardan shaft (10) to spool (16) ensuring
cardan shaft engages with cross pin (13).
17. Place gearwheel (7) over the distributor plate (9).
NOTE
See step 16 in Figure 7-19. When installing the
gearwheel, the gearwheel must be correctly aligned so
that it engages with the cardan shaft. The cross pin (13)
in the spool assembly must line up with the bottom of the
spline in the gearwheel (7).
18. Install O-rings (6) into groove on each side of the
gearwheel rim.
19. Place gearwheel rim (8) over the distributor plate (9)
and gearwheel (7). Align scribe line and mounting
holes.
20. Install spacer (5) over the cardan shaft (10).
NOTE
Place end cover so that the hole marked “P” lines up with
port “P” in the housing.
21. Using scribe line, align end cover (4) to housing (24).
Install special screws (1) with O-rings (3) into ports
“T,” “P,” and “E.” Install special screw (2) with O-ring
(3) into ports “L” and “R.” Tighten screws in an
alternating pattern to 20–24 lb-ft (27–33 N·m).
22. Remove the steering unit from the service fixture.
23. Assemble steering unit into mower.
NOTE
Do not tighten steering column mounting hardware until
steering relief pressure has been set. Column must be
removed when adjusting relief valve.
24. Set steering unit relief pressure. (See “Lift/Steering
Relief Valve Adjustment” on page 6-48.)

WARNING

Keep hands and arms clear of steering wheel on
initial startup of engine. Steering unit can
become a hydraulic motor if step 17 is not
correctly performed.

9. Loosen nut (26) and remove throttle arm (9), conical
spring washers (10), flange bushings (11), and
throttle handle (18) from steering tower (16).
10. Remove two nuts (24), two lock washers (23), two
flat washers (22), two screws (19), and throttle
support bracket (12).
11. Remove two lock nuts (13), two carriage bolts (15),
and throttle stop (14).
Installation Notes
• Install throttle lever assembly by reversing the order
of removal.
• Install throttle cable (29) on throttle support bracket
(12) so that throttle cable aligns with hole in pin (25).
• Tighten nut (5) until sufficient force is required to
move throttle lever and engine speed is maintained
during operation. After tightening nut (5), tighten
screw (8) to 100 lb-in. (11.3 N·m) to eliminate play in
throttle lever assembly.
• Position throttle stop (14) so that it contacts throttle
handle (18) when engine is at high idle. Tighten
carriage bolts (15) to 157 lb-in. (17.7 N·m).

Removal and Installation

1. Park the mower safely. (See “Park Mower Safely” on
page 1-6.)
2. Remove steering column. (See “Steering Column” on
page 7-8.)

3. Using the tilt lever, tilt the steering unit bracket (1)
forward.
4. Support steering unit (6) and steering unit bracket
(1).
5. Remove two nuts (4), spacers (5), flange bearings
(2), and shoulder bolts (3). Move steering unit (6) and
steering unit bracket (1) aside to provide clearance
for steering tower removal.

6. Remove nut (30), flat washer (22), and screw (23).
7. Loosen set screw (29) and disengage throttle cable
(31) from pin (27).
8. Remove nut (7), flat washer (8), and spacer (9).
9. Loosen nut (28) and remove throttle arm (11), conical

throttle handle (20) from steering tower (18).
10. Remove two nuts (26), two lock washers (25), two

4. Disengage tilt cable (4).
5. Remove two screws (5) and tilt cable (4).
6. Remove screw (10) and nut (7).
7. Remove nut (1), three washers (2) (if equipped), bolt
(3), and gas spring (11).
8. Remove four carriage bolts (8) and flange nuts (9),
and remove steering tower (6).
Installation Note
• Install steering tower by reversing the order of
removal.
• Do not overtighten nut (1). Gas spring must pivot
freely.
