1. Retrofit definition
In a dictionary, “to retrofit” means:
“To provide a machine with a part, or a place with equipment, that it did not originally have when it
was built”
Source: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/fr/dictionnaire/anglais/retrofit
In the Parcel lockers context, this means adding, removing or replacing a column/module of a device
already installed and operated on site.
2. System impacts & prerequisites
Performing a retrofit on a device will impact different components inside the system:
SMA / PMA applications must be reinstalled, and all the columns/modules must be rescanned
to validate the new structure
PMD must switch the device structure and keep the device id. Parcel history will be kept.
N’Iss will automatically create a new device (with same device code) and archive the previous
version. Parcels history will be lost for the device as well as boxes status.
Business Intelligence is based on N’Iss data. Device historical KPIs will be reset.
While N’Iss is still connected to PMD, it’s not possible to perform a retrofit on a device having parcels
inside (due to the way boxes are numbered on the device).
In this release, device must be empty to retrofit it

3. Backend configuration / retrofit
preparation
3.1 Profile privileges
Access to retrofit configuration process on PMD requires to have the privilege Devices. Add and
the Front options below:
o Create retrofit: user can create a retrofit version of a device
o View retrofit barcode: user can display and download the configuration barcode of the
retrofit version
o Delete retrofit: user can delete a retrofit version of a device

3.2 Create a retrofit version
When user clicks on the “Retrofit device” button, he can create a temporary device version with a
new template configured.
Steps are the same as the ones to create a new device, but with some information prefilled or that
cannot be changed
Step 1: all information except the device template are filled. User cannot change the site
associated with the device, nor the generation, type or vendor to select the template.
Step 2: user can activate/deactivate materials, processes or features for the future device
version.
Step 3: all logisticians/subzones associated to the current device version are linked to the
retrofit version. User must select the boxes that belong to logistician/subzone for each one.
He cannot add or delete a logistician or a subzone.
Step 4: all comfort zones associated to the current device version are linked to the retrofit
version. User must select the boxes that belong to each comfort zone. He can add or delete
comfort zones.
Step 5: User can cancel the creation or save to create the retrofit version. He can view and
download the configuration barcode of the retrofit version.
When a retrofit version exists for the device, the button “Retrofit device” is displayed in orange

3.3 View retrofit configuration barcode
A retrofit version of the device must have been created (button is orange)
When user clicks on the “Retrofit device” button, he can, depending on his privileges, view
the configuration barcode of the retrofit version and download it.

3.4 Overwrite retrofit version
A retrofit version of the device must have been created (button is orange)
It’s not possible to modify an existing retrofit version. If user wants to make some changes,
he must create a new retrofit version to overwrite the previous one.
When user clicks on the “Retrofit device” button, he can, depending on his privileges,
overwrite the retrofit version with a new one.
Steps are the same as the one to create a retrofit version.

3.5 Delete retrofit version
A retrofit version of the device must have been created (button is orange)
When user clicks on the “Retrofit device” button, he can, depending on his privileges,
overwrite the retrofit version with a new one.
Once the retrofit version is deleted, the button “Retrofit device” is green again.
Note: when the physical retrofit is done, the retrofit version is deleted automatically.

4. SMA & PMA process / retrofit application
4.1 Retrofit process
You must schedule the retrofit process 24 hours in advance
On PMD, the device status must be changed to MAINTENANCE.
The device must be emptied, all the parcels must have bee unloaded.
On SMA/PMA, there’s no specific process. The application just has to be reinstalled from scratch
using the new configuration barcode corresponding to the retrofit version.
When installation is finished, SMA/PMA sends a “register” to PMD with the retrofit version
structure of the device (see next slide for PMD process)
4.2 PMD Actions triggered
When PMD receives a “register” event:
PMD ensures that the status of the device is MAINTENANCE (or PLAN). If not, the register is
refused.
PMD checks the configuration received and compare it with the current configuration of the device:
If they are similar, PMD updates the ciphers (case GEN4), the password (GEN2) and changes
the status of the device to ACTIVE (existing process to reinstall a device)
If they are different, PMD first ensures that the device is empty. If not, the register is
refused.
If they are different and the device is empty, PMD checks if a “retrofit” version exists for the
device. If not, the register is refused.
If the retrofit version exists, PMD checks the configuration received and compare it with the
retrofit configuration of the device. If they are different, the register is refused else the
register is accepted.
If the register is accepted for a retrofit, the retrofit version is moved to the device structure. The
previous warehouse, installation, … dates are kept. The retrofit version is deleted automatically.
On the synchronize, PMD sends back the device structure and the announces already saved for the
device

N’Iss must then be synchronized to retrieve the new device configuration template. The device is
then archived and the new version is created.
