This section contains necessary information to operate your equipment safely. Before you

put the telephone into operation, it is absolutely necessary for you to read the safety informa-

tion described here and to make yourself familiar with the intended use of the device as well

as the technical data.

Safety Information

Warning: Inappropriate use or incorrect replacement of the power plug

can

씮 For this reason, only use a wall-mounted power supply type no.

FW7577/EU/40.

씮 Make sure it is inserted firmly and securely into the power socket.

Wobbly connectors or mains outlets pose a fire risk.

씮 Do not remove the power plug by pulling on the cable. If you would like

to disconnect the power supply, pull the power plug itself.

씮 If the power plug is damaged, first unscrew the fuse for the power supply

before pulling out the power plug.

씮 When handling 230 V system voltage and devices attached to the mains

supply, be sure to adhere to the applicable regulations.

Warning: Liquid entering the casing can cause life-threatening electric

shocks and damage or destroy the telephone.

씮 Only operate the telephone in closed, dry rooms.

씮 Only clean the casing of the device with a slightly moist cloth or an anti-

static cloth.

Warning: Damaged connection lines as well as damage to the casing and

to the device can cause life-threatening electrical shocks.

씮 Only connect the device connection cable with sockets that are

designed for that purpose.

씮 Have damaged connection lines replaced immediately.

씮 Use only original accessories and original replacements.

씮 Always have a professional carry out repairs immediately. Please

contact your electrician or the manufacturer directly.

씮 Do not touch the contact points with pointed, metallic or moist objects.

씮 Do not carry the device by the connection cables.

씮 Use the cable channels at the bottom of the telephone for strain relief.

Warning: Power surges, which can occur during electrical storms, can

cause life-threatening electric shocks or damage or destroy the devices.

씮 Have the cables installed within the building by a certified electrician.

씮 Protect the devices by installing overvoltage protection.

Warning: When using Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) electrical circuits, there

may be a hazard of electric shocks when setting up connections with non-

insulated, openly assembled metal contacts, conductors, or terminal

clamps.

씮 Avoid setting up such connections, except if the openly assembled

metal contacts are installed in areas with restricted access. A restricted

access area can be accessed only through the use of a special tool, lock

and key, or other means of security. Moreover, persons who have been

granted access to these areas have been explicitly informed on these

hazards.

Warning: Headsets, external speakers, or receivers which are not admit-

ted may cause hearing damage or interfere with the voice connection.

씮 Only used admitted accessories with the CE symbol in combination with

this telephone.

Warning: The telephone receiver creates a weak magnetic field, which

may attract small magnetic objects, such as needles and paper clips.

씮 Do not put down the receiver close to such objects in order to avoid inju-

ries.

Attention: Inappropriate cleaning or operation can damage or destroy the

touchscreen.

씮 Keep the touchscreen clean. To do this, use the cloth included in the

product package.

씮 To operate the telephone, use your fingers or fingernails. Under no cir-

cumstance use ball-point pens, pencils, or other pointed objects on the

touchscreen.

씮 Never apply force or excessive pressure when touching the touch-

screen.

Important: In France telephones are only permitted to establish Bluetooth

wireless connections within internal spaces. In some départements there

are regional restrictions on Bluetooth operation which must be complied

with.

Note: In sensitive areas, in which Bluetooth wireless operation is never

permitted, you can also remove the Bluetooth dongle from the telephone,

in addition to switching Bluetooth off.

The COMfortel 3500 is a VoIP telephone which can be operated in a Local Area

Network (LAN) as an Auerswald VoIP system telephone and/or standard VoIP

telephone. The telephone can administrate up to 100 VoIP accounts. One of

these accounts can be used as the system telephone account.

For the operation as an Auerswald system telephone, one of the following

Important: To support the COMfortel 3500, the COMmander 6000/R/RX

PBX requires firmware version 5.4A or higher. The PBXs

COMmander Basic.2 (19"), COMmander Business (19"), COMpact 5010

VoIP and COMpact 5020 VoIP require firmware version 4.2A or higher. The

firmware version 4.2A will be available at a later time.

The telephone is corded and is intended for use in closed, dry rooms.

The telephone is equipped with a touchscreen. It is operated on the basis of the

operating system Android 2.3. Alternatively, the telephone can be operated by

means of keys.

The telephone allows you to make calls by using both the connected receiver

and the integrated loudspeakers (hands-free calling). Another option is to con-

nect a headset (not included in the package).

The telephone supports the operation of cable-connected headsets as well as

cordless headsets (headsets with a DHSG interface, for example, from

Auerswald, Jabra, or Plantronics, as well as Bluetooth headsets).

The telephone permits the operation of numerous functions. This cannot only

be controlled via the display, but also via 20 freely programmable function keys

(5 of them touch function keys at the display). These can be used to execute

functions by simply pressing the corresponding function key.

Up to three COMfortel Xtension300 key extension modules (not included in the

delivery) can be attached to the telephone in order to add freely programmable

function keys. The modules are assembled at the right side of the telephone. A

completely extended system provides 110 freely programmable function keys

(including touch function keys).

The telephone can be configured in three different ways: in display-controlled

mode at the telephone itself, via the configuration manager, or in automated

mode from a provisioning server. The configuration manager is accessible via

the integrated Web server in the telephone. The required PC is connected either

directly to an network port on the telephone or must be located in the same net-

work. When configuring the telephone from a provisioning server, the telephone

directly takes over the configuration data from a file, which is previously created

and distributed over the network.

Information on the Power Supply for the Telephone

A wall-mounted power supply type no. FW7577/EU/40 with 40 V and 350 mA is

contained in the scope of delivery. Please note the following special features

with regard to the power supply of the telephone:

The power supply for the telephone can either be provided via the deliv-

ered wall-mounted power supply or – if your active network component

(switch or router) supports this – via Power over Ethernet (PoE).

The power supply for telephones with a single key extension module can

be provided via the delivered wall-mounted power supply.

For telephones with two or more key extension modules, either two

power supply units or Power over Ethernet and one power supply are

required.

Definition of Terms/Glossary

Firmware

Operating software on the telephone or PBX that is stored in the device itself.

The device cannot function without firmware.

Firmware Update

The process of updating the firmware to resolve problems and integrate new

features. To do this, the device establishes a connection to a server in order to

download the most current firmware (the device settings remain intact). Except

for the charges for the required Internet connection, the update is free of charge.

This section describes the preparations required before commissioning the device. This

includes the setting of the height and the connecting of the key extension modules (not

included in the package) as well as the receiver and/or headset (not included in the package).

Furthermore, this includes installing the telephone in a suitable location.

Assembling the Feet of the Casing and Adjusting the Height of

the Telephone

Requirements

– Telephone and key extension modules separated from each other

– The feet of the casing delivered with the telephone and the key extension

modules

Steps to Take

1. If required, remove the feet of the casing from the telephone and key exten-

sion modules.

2. Reassemble the feet of the casing in the required position.

Note: The feet can be assembled in three different positions within the

marked area.

Assembling and Connecting the Key Extension Modules

Requirements

– Up to three key extension modules COMfortel Xtension300

– The mounting hardware accompanying the key extension modules (special

fasteners, screws, and connection cable)

– A screw driver (cross slot)

– Telephone, switched off (disconnected from the 230 V power supply – if

available – and disconnected from the network)

– Telephone and key extension modules, adjusted to the required height

Steps to Take

1. Place the telephone and the key extension modules on the table in the po-

sition in which they are to be assembled.

Note: The key extension modules (up to three are possible) are assembled

at the right side of the telephone.

2. Rotate the telephone and key extension modules so that the lower side is

in front of you.

3. Insert the narrower connector (RJ-10) of the connection cable into the jack

labelled with on the lower side of the telephone.

4. Insert the wider connector (RJ-11) of the connection cable into the jack la-

belled with on the lower side of the first key extension module.

5. Install the connection cables in the neighboring cable channels in such a

way that you can assemble the special connector without obstructions.

6. Combine the components with the help of the special connector and fasten

the special connector with two screws.

Note: Only hand-tighten the screws. The key extension modules will be

slightly loose after mounting, to compensate for any unevenness in the

surface on which they are being installed.

7. Additional key extension modules: Insert the narrower connector (RJ-10) of

the connection cable into the jack labelled with on the lower side of the

key extension module connected previously.

8. Insert the wider connector (RJ-11) of the connection cable into the jack la-

belled with on the lower side of the next key extension module.

9. Repeat steps 5. and 6. for the connected key extension modules.

Further Steps

쑱 Depending on the number of connected key extension modules, you have

to connect one or two power supply plug(s).

Notes on the power supply: The power supply for the telephone can

either be provided via the delivered power supply or – if your active network

Steps to Take

1. Only for the operation without Power over Ethernet: Remove the bridge

plug from the corresponding jack marked with on the lower side of the

telephone.

2. Only for the operation without Power over Ethernet: Insert the RJ-45 con-

nector of the power supply into the jack labelled with on the lower side

of the telephone.

Do not set up the connection to the 230 V mains supply before the tele-

phone is actually commissioned.

3. If operated with two or three key extension modules: Insert the RJ-45 con-

nector of the power supply into the jack labelled with on the lower side

of the key extension module.

Connecting the Receiver

Steps to Take

1. Insert the RJ-10 connector at the longer, plane end of the spiral cord into

the jack labelled with on the lower side of the telephone.

2. Guide the cable to the outside using the corresponding cable channel (see

Fig. 9).

3. Insert the other RJ-10 connector of the spiral cord into the jack on the re-

ceiver.

Connecting the Headset

Requirements

– A headset corresponding to technical data listed on Page 11.

Note: The telephone supports the operation of cable-connected headsets

as well as cordless headsets (headsets with a DHSG interface, for exam-

ple, from Auerswald, Jabra, or Plantronics).

– To connect a COMfortel headset from Auerswald or another cable-con-

nected headset, you require: an adapter.

Note: The adapter is available at specialized stores as an Auerswald

accessory.

Steps to Take

1. Insert the headset connector into the jack labelled with on the lower

side of the telephone.

2. Guide the cable to the outside using the corresponding cable channel.

Further Steps

쑱 In order to use the headset for calls, headset operation must be enabled at

the end of commissioning (under Functions > Headset).

Assembling the Telephone

Requirements

– Existing connections in the immediate vicinity of where the telephone is

placed:

damage or destruction of the device or impairment of its functions.

씮 Avoid mechanical loads (e.g. vibrations).

씮 Avoid the proximity of devices which radiate electro-magnetic fields (for

example, radio sets, professional radio equipment, amateur radio

equipment, mobile phones, DECT systems, WLAN routers, etc.).

씮 Do not expose the device to direct sunlight.

씮 Protect the device from dirt, excessive dust, condensation, caustic liq-

uids, and steam.

씮 Note the values for ambient temperature and humidity given in the tech-

nical data.

Steps to Take

1. Place the telephone on a clean, flat surface.

Attention: Some paints or plastics used on furniture may react chemically

with the plastic feet on the device and cause them to soften. Plastic chem-

ically changed in this way on the feet of the device may cause damage to

the surface of your furniture.

씮 Place the telephone on a non-slip pad.

This section describes how to commission the telephone for the first time in a stepwise pro-

cedure. After a successful initial commissioning, you will be able to make internal calls. You

can customize your telephone using the computer configuration described at the end of this

section.

Commissioning the Telephone

Note: If you would like to integrate the telephone into an existing network,

please contact the system administrator responsible for this. Making

changes to an existing network may cause considerable malfunctions.

Requirements

– The patch cable delivered with the telephone

Note: If you require a longer or shorter patch cable, use one without snap

tab protection, because you may not be able to insert it far enough other-

wise.

– For the operation with Power over Ethernet: Bridge plug which is inserted

into the jack labelled with at the lower side of the telephone

– For the operation with power supply plug(s): Power supply plug(s) con-

nected to the telephone

– For the operation as system telephone: PBX with the following features:

Switched on (connected to the 230 V mains supply)

쐽

COMmander 6000/R/RX: firmware version 5.4A or higher

쐽

COMpact 5010 VoIP, COMpact 5020 VoIP, COMmander Basic.2 and

Note: If required, make an update of the PBX (see the instructions for the

PBX). The firmware version 4.2A will be available at a later time.

– For the automated configuration from a provisioning server: provisioning file

which is stored on the provisioning server and is known on the DHCP server

Steps to Take

1. Insert a plug of the patch cable into the jack labelled with on the lower

side of the telephone.

2. Insert the other plug of the patch cable into the outgoing jack on the DSL

router/switch or into an existing network mains outlet.

3. If required, insert the power supply plug(s) into a freely accessible 230 V

network mains outlet.

The telephone starts up. In the meantime, the LED above the display

turns red and the Auerswald company icon is shown on the display.

If a DHCP server has been configured in the local network, the tele-

phone automatically receives its IP address, subnet mask, as well as

the gateway and DNS server addresses from this DHCP server during

a DHCP request.

The telephone searches for an Auerswald PBX in the network.

The setup assistant is automatically started.

The dialogue box to select the language is opened (only during the in-

itial start-up of the telephone).

4. Tap on the required language.

If the telephone has found an appropriate PBX, an account (e. g.

Account 001) will automatically be created for this PBX and will be dis-

played in the setup assistant under Inactive or unregistered ac-

counts.

Note: Please observe the following notes if your telephone shows a differ-

ing or unexpected behaviour.

If the message Faulty network setup is shown on the display, this indi-

cates that the DHCP server is missing. You can also operate the telephone

with a permanent IP address. To do this, proceed as described in

Fig. 10: Connecting the patch cable (here for the operation with Power over

Ethernet)

Configuring Network Settings Manually on page 52 and subsequently go

back to this point.

If the setup assistant is started, but no account is displayed, the telephone

has not found any Auerswald PBX. If an Auerswald PBX is available, check

whether the corresponding PBX is switched on and start the search again.

To do this, tap on Search for private exchange systems. If the search is

not successful or if no PBX is available, you can also create an account and

the corresponding VoIP provider with the help of profiles. To do this, pro-

ceed as described in Manually Creating and Configuring a Standard VoIP

Account for an Auerswald PBX on page 55 or Creating and Configuring

Accounts for VoIP Providers on page 57. If you do not want to use the pro-

files which are preconfigured by the telephone, you can also configure VoIP

providers and accounts independently in the telephone. To do this, tap on

Manual setup.

During the automated configuration from a provisioning server, the tele-

phone requests the address of the provisioning server and the name of the

provisioning file from the DHCP server. Subsequently, the telephone starts

up, displays the start page, and is ready for operation. If the telephone

starts up with the setup assistant instead, you can enter the address of the

provisioning server into the telephone. To do this, tap on Specify provisio-

ning server and subsequently enter the URL.

5. Tap on the automatically created account (e.g. Account 001).

6. Tap on System telephony account.

Note: If you wish to configure this account as a standard VoIP account

instead, for instance because the telephone has to be operated at several

Auerswald PBXs, proceed as described in Configuring an Automatically

Created Account as the Standard VoIP Account for an Auerswald PBX on

page 53.

Tip: Tap on the buttons to the left on the display to go back to one of the

previous configuration steps, if required.

7. In the User name entry field, enter the internal telephone number previ-

ously configured in the PBX.

Tip: To correct wrong entries, you can tap on the entry field and, thus, fade

in the Android keyboard with a delete button on the display. If you press the

Back key, the Android keyboard will be faded out, once more.

8. Tap on OK.

9. Enter the password corresponding to the internal telephone number in the

Password entry field.
