2 PURPOSE AND CHARACTERISTICS
The Cobra4 Mobile-Link 2 is used for the mobile acquisition
of measurement values that are generated by way of a Co-
bra4 Sensor-Unit.
For this purpose, the unit is equipped with an SD/MMC
memory card. The control menu of the unit enables all rele-
vant adaptations, e.g. the calibration and taring of the unit,
without the need for a PC.
In order to transfer the data to the PC after the completion of
the measurement, the Cobra4 Mobile-Link 2 is equipped with
a USB socket. As an alternative, the memory card can be
removed and the data can be transferred to a PC by way of a
reading device. Ensure that no other Cobra4 device is con-
nected to the PC during the data transfer.
The power supply of the Mobile-Link 2 is ensured by an inte-
grated, rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a charge of
1950mAh. Due to its technology, it exhibits a certain, mini-
mum level of self-discharge. This is why we recommend
checking the charge of the battery prior to using the device,
and to recharge it if necessary.
The battery can be charged via a computer by way of a USB
cable or by way of the supplied power supply unit.
3 FUNCTIONAL AND OPERATING ELEMENTS
3.1 Operating elements on the top
The Cobra4 Mobile-Link 2 is equipped with various elements
for the measurement data display, operation, and status
indication. These elements are explained in detail in the
following sections (Fig. 2).
1. ON/OFF switch
For switching the unit on and off. The process of
switching the unit on or off is confirmed by way of a
sound signal (brief beeping sound). The unit has an
automatic switch-off function in order to prevent the
battery from being discharged: If no measurement is
performed, the unit will be switched off ten minutes af-
ter the last actuation of a button. If the voltage falls be-
low a critical level during the measurement data re-
cording process, an audible alarm will be issued and
the unit will save the measurement values that have
been recorded up to this moment. Then, the unit will
switch off.
2. Display
Colour representation of the measurement values and
selection elements for the menu navigation.
3. LED Battery
For indicating the battery charging process. The LED
lights when a power supply unit or USB cable is con-
nected.
4. Navigation arrows
For selecting a specific measurement
value in the case of multi-channel sen-
sors and for the menu navigation.
5. Confirmation key
For starting and stopping the measurement data re-
cording process and for the menu navigation.
3.2 Sensor interface
The front of the unit is equipped with an interface via which
the connection to a corresponding Cobra4 Sensor-Unit is
realised. This mechanically secure connection is made by
way of lock knobs and holes on/in both units (Fig. 3).
Fig. 3: Cobra4 Mobile-Link 2 front with sensor interface. The
lock knob can be inserted into the hole of the cor-
responding counterpart.

3.3 USB interface for the PC
A USB mini-socket is integrated into the sealing cap at the
front of the device (Fig. 4). It is used for the data transfer to
the PC (after the measurement or simultaneously) and for
charging the integrated battery.
3.3 Recording function of the memory card
The recording of measurement values requires a memory
card (e.g. part no. 12620-01; SD/MMC format). Push the card
into the slot in the housing until it locks into place. On the
display, the symbol will be displayed in the header.
In order to unlock the card, press against it and remove it
(Fig. 5).
If no memory has been inserted, a warning sound will be
issued and a warning symbol will be displayed in the header
of the display: .
4 NOTES ON OPERATION
The device fulfils the technical requirements that are summa-
rised in the current directives of the European Community.
The product characteristics entitle the unit to bear the CE
mark. Compliance with the following instructions must be
ensured:
- The unit must be used under the supervision of an ex-
pert and in an electromagnetically controlled environ-
ment at research, teaching, and training facilities
(schools, universities, institutes, and laboratories).
This means that, in such an environment, radio trans-
mission devices, e.g. mobile phones, should not be used
in the direct vicinity of the unit. The connected cables
must not be longer than 2m.
- The measurement data recording process as well as the
general operation of the device can be influenced by ra-
diofrequency fields.
- Electrostatic charges or similar electromagnetic phe-
nomena (HF, bursts, indirect lightning discharge, etc.)
may affect the unit so that it will not work within the
specified data range.
The following measures reduce or eliminate the poten-
tial interferences: Ensure equipotential bonding and use
shielding when using the device in combination with a
PC (in particular with a laptop computer). Do not use
radiofrequency transmitters (e.g. radio sets or mobile
phones) in the direct vicinity of the unit. After a complete
shut-down of the unit, it must be switched off and on
again by way of the ON/OFF switch (operating ele-
ment ). If the unit does not react, keep the ON/OFF
switch pressed for more than 3 seconds so that the unit
will restart.
5 MOBILE HANDLING
This section describes the start-up of the Cobra4 Mobile-
Link 2 and provides an overview of its handling. Please read
this section thoroughly in order to avoid failures or operating
errors.
5.1 Start-up
If the unit is used for the first time, charge the integrated
battery via the USB interface. This can be realised either with
the supplied power supply unit or with the aid of the USB
cable that must be connected to a computer. The charging
process is indicated by the battery LED on the front of the
unit and, if the unit is switched on, in the header of the dis-
play.
In order to record measurement data, the memory card must
be inserted beforehand as described under 3.3.
If the stored data are to be displayed and evaluated on the
PC by way of the measurement evaluation software "meas-
ure", the necessary drivers and programs must be installed
on the PC beforehand via the supplied CD. To do so, insert
the supplied "measure" CD into the drive of your PC and
follow the instructions.
5.2 Starting the unit
The unit is switched on by way of the ON/OFF switch as
described in 3.1.1.
After the unit has been switched on, the start screen will be
displayed. The header of the display includes various sym-
bols that describe the status of the unit.
If no Cobra4 Sensor-Unit is connected to the device, the
Cobra4 Mobile-Link 2 automatically uses the three measuring
channels of the integrated acceleration sensor. This is con-
firmed in the header of the display by way of the word "Ac-
celeration".
In the upper half of the display, i.e. in the main field, one of
the three channels of the acceleration sensor and the associ-
ated measured values are displayed in a large form. The
other two measuring channels are displayed in smaller form
in the field below.
The footer of the display shows the existing navigation op-
tions of the user (see Fig. 6).

5.4.13 Utilities/Water level (6.2)
Here, you can select a water level that can be used to align
experiments horizontally and vertically on a plane or on a
wall.
Alignment on a plane:
Lay the instrument flat on its back and align the surface until
the bubble is located precisely in the centre of the crosshairs.
Horizontal and vertical alignment:
Set up the instrument on its side and hold it against a rail or
similar that is to be aligned. The rail is aligned when the bub-
ble is located between the lines.
In order to tare the water level to 0, press the right arrow
key ► and confirm with or reject with ◄.
5.4.14 Extras/ GPS (6.3)
Here, the geographical coordinates of the current location are
indicated.
The indication is in degrees, minutes, and seconds.
This menu item can only be used in combination with a Mo-
bile-Link 2 GPS (12620-20) and GPS activated.
See also chapter 5.4.9.
Coordinates will not be displayed unless satellites have been
found. In addition, the successful detection of satellites is
indicated by an icon in the header.

6.2 Starting the unit
Prior to connecting the unit to the PC, attach the desired
Cobra4 Sensor-Unit to it. Following the connection of the
device to the PC via the USB port, the connection is con-
firmed visually on the display of the Cobra4 Mobile-Link 2
(Fig. 29).
The upper area of the display shows the sensor that has
been identified as well as the device number (if several Co-
bra4 devices are connected via the USB interface, they are
numbered). In the upper right-hand corner, a measurement
that is started via the PC is indicated by the recording sym-
bol .
Once the connection has been set up, Cobra4 Mobile-Link 2
and the connected Sensor-Unit are automatically displayed in
the "measure" software together with all of the measuring
channels. All further steps, such as the recording of meas-
urement values or changing of the measurement parameters,
are software-based and, therefore, not described in this
document.
7 CHANGING THE BATTERY
If the capacity of the battery decreases strongly, it is possible
to change the battery. Please note that damage resulting
from a battery change are not covered by the warranty. You
can send the Mobile-Link to the repairs department of
PHYWE in order to have the battery changed.
Step 1: Open the battery cover by pressing a pen or another
object onto the holder of the battery cover.
Attention: Open the left-hand side first, followed by the right-
hand side, in order to ensure that the flat cable connector that
is located on the left of the battery is not damaged.
Step 2: Disconnect the battery connector from the circuit
board. Remove the old battery. Insert the new battery into the
holder.
Step 3: Connect the connector of the new battery.
Attention: Ensure that the cable is located above the USB
connector or, otherwise, the cover cannot be closed.
