Revision 1.0 Feb 8, 2021
SECTION 1: Introduction and General Information
1-1 Equipment Description
1-1.1 Purpose
The PBS-4100R+ Test Cell Vibration and Balancing System, illustrated in Figure 1-1, is used to
perform trim balance and vibration diagnostics on all types of gas turbine engines and other
rotating machinery. It has been designed as a rugged, rack-mountable instrument for use in
test cell control rooms and can be easily integrated with test cell host computers for seamless
control of the collection and retrieval of engine vibration and speed data.
A key reason for using the PBS-4100R+
system is to reduce the amount of time required to
perform vibration analysis and trim balancing of gas turbine engines. This, in turn improves
engine quality, saves engine running time, fuel, reduces test time, and improves overall engine
availability rates.
The PBS-4100R+ saves time by incorporating features such as automatic data collection, stored
engine parameters, and balancing from vibration survey files. The PBS
Balancing Wizard
guides users through the balancing process. Balancing data can be acquired at individual speed
points, or from a previously collected vibration survey. Correction weight calculations can be
quickly calculated by using stored influence coefficients for "one-shot" balancing. This
technique automatically calculates specific balance solutions, complete with manufacturer’s part
numbers for balance weights and specific instructions about balance weight mounting locations.

Revision 1.0 Feb 8, 2021
Another advantage of the PBS-4100R+ is that it gives the user a set of “tools” to perform
vibration diagnostics. These tools can be used to determine whether trim balancing is
appropriate and to identify potential engine mechanical problems.
The printing and data reporting features of the PBS-4100R+ can also be used to improve record
keeping and tracking of the health of an engine.
1-1.2 Basic Functional Description.
The PBS-4100R+ is a complete engine vibration analysis and balancing system designed to be
used in conjunction with a test cell host computer. Special features have been incorporated
into the PBS-4100R+ to allow a test cell host computer to be able to:
Continuously collect vibration data of engines being run in the test cell. All vibration
and speed data from all channels are continuously acquired and made available to the
host computer.
Perform vibration surveys of engine accelerations and decelerations. During each
run, vibration data from all channels is acquired and made available to the host
computer.
Monitor overall and synchronous components. During all engine runs, users can
easily monitor total vibration levels, and important vibration components to aid in
diagnosing vibration-related problems.
Acquire vibration signal spectrum data. Using these data, users can pinpoint the
sources of vibrations within the engine for a fast and accurate diagnosis.
Trim balance engines. The PBS-4100R+
Balancing Wizard
guides users through
the process of balancing engines using trial weight or stored influence coefficient
methods.
Trim Balance using vibration surveys. The PBS-4100R+ Balancing Wizard features
the ability to balance engines using saved vibration survey files. This new feature saves
time and engine runs and applies to both the trial weight and influence coefficient
methods.
Digital Data Interface. The Digital Data Interface (DDI) option is ideal for integrating
the operation of the PBS-4100R+ with your test cell host computer. High speed
Ethernet commands from your host computer can control the operation of the PBS-
4100R+ system, and send vibration data back to the host for display.
Output DC signals. Using optional hardware, the PBS-4100R+ can be programmed to
output DC signals that are proportional to acquired and derived vibration signals. These
DC signals can be used to drive other test cell instrumentation.
To start testing an engine, the operator must first select the specific engine type from a list
of pre-loaded engine parameters. The operator's selection directs the PBS-4100R+
system to
take engine specific data from the "parameters file" to control how the PBS-4100R+
acquires
PBS-4100R+ MTI Instruments 7001-0197
1-3
Revision 1.0 Feb 8, 2021
engine data and displays it for the user. The parameter files and the PBS-4100R+ software are
stored on the hard disk of the PBS-4100R+ system.
After the engine has been selected, and the monitoring software has started, the PBS-4100R+
continually collects speed and vibration data from the engine under test. This data can be
displayed in graphical or tabular form. When vibration levels demand balancing, the PBS-
4100R+
Balancing Wizard
guides the collection of engine data, and calculates a balance
solution. Balancing solutions are graphically displayed to show the specific balance plane holes
in which weights should be installed to reduce engine vibrations. Balance solutions also include
the size and part number of weights to be installed. A record of each balance run is
automatically stored and may be printed to provide a historical record when desired.
1-1.3 Hardware Description
The PBS-4100R+ system is an integrated Data Acquisition System containing two advanced
computers, Windows software, and the
WinPBS

1-1.3.2 Power requirements
The PBS-4100R+ is designed to operate using standard test cell power sources. Input power
control circuits feature an autosensing/autoswitching function, which avoids the risk of
equipment damage due to improper power selection. Input power can be either 115 or 230
VAC (± 10%) and 50, 60, or 400 Hz (± 10%).
1-1.3.3 Input Data Signals
The PBS-4100R+ uses input data signals that are generated by one or more vibration pickups
mounted on the engine. Some engines have built-in vibration pickups, whereas other engines
require the installation of temporary pickups for ground test. The PBS-4100R+ also requires an
engine speed signal, and this can come from a built-in speed pickup (when present) or from a
ground test tachometer.
The PBS-4100R+ has been designed to interface directly with test cell wiring. However,
specially designed optional cable sets are available to connect the PBS-4100R+ to the
appropriate vibration and speed pickups on a particular engine type.

1-1.4.3 Interface Cables.
Although engine test cells frequently are wired for all engine signals, customers often request
special cabling to help in the operation of the PBS-4100R+. Figure 1-4 illustrates two engine
interface cables manufactured by MTI Instruments.
The engine interface cable (EIC), with appropriate jumpers at each end, carries signals from the
engine directly to the PBS-4100R+. It contains four pairs of twisted-pair conductors, with
shielding on each pair. One of these pairs is normally reserved to provide 12V DC power to
optional charge amplifiers leaving three pairs available for data channels (for example, two
vibration channels and one tachometer channel).
Normally the EIC is used with PBS-4100+ systems for on-wing applications where aircraft wiring
does not carry the signals required by the PBS-4100+. However, the EIC can also be used to
supplement test cell wiring. The EIC is supplied on a reel and is available in varying lengths,
with lengths of 90 feet (27 meters) and 190 feet (58 meters) being standard.
The PBS jumper cable connects the PBS-4100R+ to the EIC. There is a family of these cables
that are used to provide power (from the PBS-4100R+ unit) to the optional charge amplifier
boxes, and to deliver engine tachometer and vibration signals to proper PBS-4100R+ rear panel
connectors. Other cables are offered to complete connections between the EIC cable and
engine specific instrumentation such as vibration sensors and tachometers. Consult the factory
for engine and application specific part numbers.

Revision 1.0 Feb 8, 2021
The PBS-4100R+ has been developed specifically for test cell integrators who desire a state-of-
the-art vibration data collection system that can be easily integrated into their systems. The
PBS-4100R+ can be used on virtually any gas turbine engine. Under normal operation, the
PBS-4100R+ will be controlled by the test cell host computer. However, the PBS-4100R+ can
always be used in a “manual” mode of operation. To set up the PBS-4100R+ for use on a
particular engine, the operator must select the appropriate engine type from a menu. By
making a selection from the menu, the user directs the PBS-4100R+ to retrieve data from an
engine parameters file, which contains data specific to the selected engine type. The engine
parameter data includes technical specifications such as idle and 100% speed values, vibration
sensor sensitivities, balance weight classes, number and spacing of balance weight mounting
holes, etc.
The basic PBS-4100R+ system comes equipped with several engine parameter files installed at
the factory. Additional engine type files are available from MTI as options, and virtually an
unlimited number of engine types can be stored in the PBS-4100R+ system. New engine types
can be permanently added to the system by installing the appropriate parameters file in a one-
time installation procedure.
Table 1-2 provides a tabular listing of engine types and their respective part numbers. New
engines are frequently added to the list. For engines not listed, consult MTI.
