Introduction
The Savant® Keypad Link (SKL-1000) Deployment Guide provides the information necessary to install the SKL-1000. Each
SKL-1000 connects up to 12 Savant keypads to any Savant controller with an available RS-232 port. If keypads are double
ganged, they are considered 2 keypads.

Design Considerations
The Savant Keypad link can control up to twelve daisy-chained keypads, and communicates with various audio/video devices
through a Savant controller via an RS-232 connection. If more that 1000 feet is used to connect 12 or fewer keypads, then
another SKL-1000 must be used in the installation. Note that one SKL-1000 allows a maximum of 1000 feet of 16-gauge wire
to connect to the keypads.
Wiring the Savant Keypads to the Savant Keypad Link
To connect the keypads to the SKL-1000, the wires from the 3-pin connectors must be spliced with the 4-wire cable running to
the keypad backboxes. The next figure shows the use of 16-gauge (AWG) wire, but in shorter installations (up to 330 feet) 18-
gauge wire can be used. Crimp connectors or wire nuts can be used to terminate the stranded wire. Crimp connectors are
preferred.
Note: Voltage readings at the end closest to the 3-pin connector should typically read no more than 1 or 2 volts less than at
the Savant Keypad Link end.
Design Considerations
Twelve keypads can be be daisy-chained with 16 gauge wire over a length of 1000 feet and terminated on a Savant
Keypad Link which connects to a Savant controller (via RS-232 port) that communicates with various audio/video
devices. If more than 1000 feet is used to connect 12 or fewer keypads, then another SKL-1000 must be used in the
installation. Note that one SKL-1000 allows the use of a maximum 1000 feet of 16 gauge wire to connect it to the
keypads.

Backbox Size
Keypad backboxes should have a minimum inside dimension of 3 in.
high x 1! in. wide x 1" in deep. Use a square-cornered backbox to
best accommodate these dimensions. Do not use plastic rings with
rounded corners—keypads, especially multiple-gang keypads, will
not fit. Single-gang, metal cut-in boxes, plaster, or tile rings are not
acceptable.
In new construction installations, for example, a single gang
backbox, model P-241 (supplied by Allied Moulded Products) would
accommodate a Savant keypad. An example of a double gang
backbox is model P-442 (supplied by Allied Moulded Products).
Whether installing backboxes in new construction or “old work”
installations, the installer should test fit the keypad to the backbox
before installing the backbox in a wall.

Installation Recommendations
Keypad backboxes should have a minimum inside dimension of 3 in. high x 1 in. wide x 1½ in deep. Use a square-cornered
backbox to best accommodate these dimensions. Do not use plastic rings with rounded corners—keypads, especially multiple-
gang keypads, will not fit. Single-gang, metal cut-in boxes, plaster, or tile rings are not acceptable.
The minimum clearance is 1/8 inch on each side of the keypad and ½ inch from the back of the keypad.
Recommended backbox for single keypad is Carlon B116A or Allied Moulded P-241 or equivalent.
Recommended backbox for ganged keypads is Carlon B232A or Allied Moulded P-441 or equivalent
Whether installing backboxes in new construction or “old work” installations, the installer should test fit the keypad to the
backbox before installing the backbox in a wall.
Note: Keypads may be wired to a homerun device, not to exceed 1000 feet with 16 AWG or 330 feet with 18 AWG.
SKL-1000 Mounting Bracket Installation
Use the supplied screws to install the Side Mounting Brackets (071-0494-xx) to the SKL-1000 as shown.
