DESCRIPTION
The Quad Line Interface Unit (Quad LIU)
is a common module for the ADTRAN
standard Total Access 1500 chassis (P/N
1180001L1) or the Total Access 1500 19-
inch chassis (P/N 1180019L1). The Quad
LIU connects the chassis to a T1 line at
the DSX-1 or DS1 level. All data
formatting and line encoding as well as
backplane timing and control are
performed by the Quad LIU.
The Quad LIU incorporates SLC Mode II
operation, fast failover to the optional
redundant offline LIU, and works in
conjunction with the System Controller
Unit (SCU) to provide for Voice
Frequency (VF) Test Access.
There are two versions of the SCU:
Central Office Terminal (P/N
1180008L22)
Remote Terminal (P/N 1180008L23)
The Quad LIU is designed to interface with a T1 metallic Span
(DS1) providing span termination, line build-out, as well as
second-level lightning and surge protection of the Total Access
1500 system from the metallic T1 pairs. The Quad LIU can also be
deployed behind a T1 Network Interface Unit/Smartjack (NIU) or
T1 Office Repeater (T1-OR), including HDSL, HDSL2, and HDSL4
Central and Remote Terminating Units (DSX-1). When deployed
in a redundant Quad LIU configuration, another Quad LIU must
be used to insure proper operation of the additional features.
NOTE
This release of the Quad LIU software is designed to operate with
SCU software release V15 or later to support these feature
enhancements.

To install the Quad LIU, complete the following steps:
1. If present, remove the LIU Blank (P/N 1180010L1) from the
appropriate LIU common module slot of the Total Access
1500 chassis.
2. Hold the Quad LIU by the front panel while supporting the
bottom edge.
3. Align the Quad LIU card edges to the guide grooves for the
slot designated LIU-A.
4. Insert the Quad LIU until the edge connector seats firmly
into the backplane.
5. Push the ejector latch in place to ensure the Quad LIU is
fully seated.
NOTE
An additional LIU-B slot is also provided for optional
redundancy.
When the Quad LIU first powers up, it performs the power up
self-tests which check the DRAM and checksum. Once the power
up self-test is complete, the LEDs reflect the true state of the
hardware.
Front Panel Push Button
A push button labeled STATUS is accessible from the front panel
to aid in test and troubleshooting. Momentary activation cycles
through the T1s for monitoring purposes. Activating the switch
for two or more seconds causes the Quad LIU to toggle between
local and remote provisioning.
Bantam Access Jacks
The front panel of the Quad LIU contains metallic splitting jacks.
The MONITOR TX and RX
bantam jacks are provided for nonin-
trusive T1 test access.
NOTE
TX = Transmit (Out) and RX = Receive (In)

PROVISIONING
All options on the Quad LIU are provisionable either manually,
using onboard DIP switches, or electronically using the SCU
ADMIN port.
Manual Provisioning
The DIP switches SW1 and SW2 provide the Quad LIU with the
necessary option settings for DSX/DS1 modes of operation. The
figure below shows the orientation of the DIP switches. The
following settings can be configured with the SW1 and SW2 DIP
switches:
SW1
o Line Build Out and DS1 Attenuation
SW2
o Line Code Format
o Framing Format
o Timing Mode
o Terminal Mode
NOTE
DIP switch settings can be used for the initial turn up of the
system, and can automatically assign time slots to physical slots,
depending on the setting selected. If any setting is changed via
the VT100 interface, the REM LED on the front panel illuminates
indicating that the settings have changed.
Line Build Out and DS1 Attenuation
The SW1 switch is used to configure the Line Build Out (LBO)
and DS1 attenuation. The table below shows the DIP switch
settings for SW1.

Substitution (B8ZS), which allows for Clear Channel operation
for the T1 carrier system. This option must be configured
identically with all other T1 network equipment on this circuit.
AMI: This setting is used to enable Alternate Mark Inversion
(AMI). This option must be configured identically with all
other T1 network equipment on this circuit.
The table on the next page shows the DIP switch settings for SW2.
Framing Format
The SW2-2 switch is used to select the framing format for the
Quad LIU. This setting must be configured identically with all
other T1 network equipment on this circuit. The Framing Format
settings are as follows:
ESF: This setting is used to enable Extended Superframe
Format.
SF: This setting is used to enable Superframe Format.
The table on the next page shows the DIP switch settings for SW2.
Timing Mode
The SW2-3 and SW2-4 switches are used to determine a clock
source for the Total Access 1500 channel bank. The timing mode
settings are as follows:
Local Clock: This setting is used to derive the timing from the
local Quad LIU.
Loop A Clock: This setting is used to derive the timing from
the T1 bit stream.
External Clock input: This setting is used to derive the timing
from an external source.
The table on the next page shows the DIP switch settings for SW2.
Terminal Mode
The SW2-5, SW2-6, and SW2-7 switches select the appropriate
Terminal Type and counting mode for the Total Access 1500
system. The Terminal Mode settings are as follows:
D4; D4 or D1D counting
DLC (Quad D4); D4 counting
SLC Mode 1; D1D counting
SLC Mode 3; D4 or D1D counting
SLC Mode 2
The table on the next page shows the DIP switch settings for SW2.

Electronic Provisioning
The craft ports on the Total Access 1500 SCU are used to change
default options and obtain access module status through menu
screens. The SCU has a front panel-mounted DB-9 connector,
labeled ADMIN, that supplies an RS-232 interface for connection
to a controlling terminal. The supported terminal type is VT100 or
compatible and is set for 9600 bps, 8-data bits, no parity, no flow
control, and 1-stop bit.
Password and User ID
Password protection is a function of the SCU and is factory
disabled. If password authentication is enabled, the SCU displays
the Logon screen. A valid User Name and Password are required
to access menus.
NOTE
The factory default User Name is “user”, and the default
Password is “password”. The User Name and Password are not
case sensitive.
Refer to the Total Access 1500 Quad Line Interface Unit Installation
