2. INSTALLATION
CAUTION
This equipment contains static sensitive
components. Ensure proper ESD procedures
are followed when handling or installing this
equipment.
After unpacking the unit, inspect it for shipping
damage. If damage is noted, file a claim with the
carrier, and then contact ADTRAN Customer Service
(see Warranty and Customer Service).
The ACT LIU, List 1 plugs directly into the ADTRAN
ACT 2300/1900 channel bank. No installatior wiring
is required.
The ACT LIU should be installed in the ACT 2300 or
ACT 1900 channel banks in the slot labeled LIU. To
install the ACT LIU, grasp the unit by the faceplate
and push the unit into the connector until the unit is
fully seated. Lock the unit into position with the two
faceplate screws.
NOTE
The T1 interface (DSX-1) is intended to be
connected to intra-building wiring only.
Provisioning Options
The ACT LIU is provisioned either manually, using
an internal nine-position internal DIP switch (SW2)
and a two-position faceplate-mounted DIP switch, or
electronically using a menu driven program called
EASYMENU
TM
. EASYMENU
TM
is accessed through
either the faceplate administrative port (ADMIN) of
the Bank Controller Unit (BCU) or the remote port
(REMOTE) on the rear of the ACT 2300/1900
chassis. Manual provisioning must be completed
before the LIU is inserted into the bank, while
electronic provisioning is completed following system
turn-up.
Manual Provisioning
DIP switch 2 (SW2) and the two-position faceplate-
mounted switch are used to manually provision the
unit.
Switch Option Settings
Switch 2 (SW2) selects line equalization, Payload or
Line loopback at the remote bank, line code format
[binary 8 zero substitution (B8ZS) or alternate mark
inversion (AMI), framing format [superframe (SF) or
extended superframe (ESF)], and timing source (local,
loop, or external). Figure 2 shows the location of
SW2 and Table 1 provides option settings.
NOTE
Switch setting SW2-3, Payload (PYLD) or
Line (LINE) loopback, works in conjunction
with the front-panel, remote-loopback switch
of the ACT LIU. The loopback selected using
SW2-3 defines the type of loopback the
faceplate switch activates at the remote
channel bank.
Two-position Faceplate Switch
The two-position rocker switch shown in Figure 1
selects either the Operating or Test mode of the LIU.
The top switch enables or disables a local loopback
function. The bottom switch enables or disables a
remote loopback function which loops the signal back
at the remote bank. In both cases, moving the switch
to the left position enables the test function. Putting
both switches in the Off position (default) selects
normal operation.
Electronic Provisioning
ADTRAN EASYMENU
TM
is used to electronically
provision the unit. Connect a VT 100 terminal or a
computer running a terminal emulation program to the
faceplate ADMIN port or REMOTE port using a
standard male-to-male RS-232 cable. Table 2 shows
the settings for the ADMIN and REMOTE ports.

Connections
The ACT LIU occupies the common card position in
the ACT 2300 and ACT 1900 labeled LIU. The
connector pin assignments are detailed in Figure 3.
3. TESTING
Loopback Tests
The ACT LIU has two loopback modes: Local
loopback and Remote loopback. Either of the
loopback modes cause an interruption-of-service
alarm at the far-end terminal. Figure 4 shows
loopback points.
Local Loopback
Local loopback bridges the T1 line across the receiver
pair to the transmit pair, isolating the bank from the
T1 line. This allows internal bank testing, individual
card tests, and provides a baseline for line testing.

Remote Loopback
The Remote loopback feature only operates in ESF
mode framing format. If ESF mode is optioned,
activating the Remote Loopback switch loops the T1
line of the remote bank. See Description Practice,
Section 61150070L1-2, for details of the loopback
sequence.
Faceplate Indicators
The ACT 2300 LIU has 13 faceplate indicators. The
indicators can be grouped into three categories:
Configuration, Status, and Test. Figure 5 shows
faceplate LEDs and Table 3 describes their meaning.
4. MAINTENANCE
The ACT LIU requires no routine maintenance to
operate properly. In case of equipment malfunction,
use the faceplate test connector and indicators to
determine the trouble source. The faceplate of the
ACT LIU contains the Bantam test jacks for a T1
tester such as a Phoenix 5575 test set.
The MON Bantam test jacks allow a test set to
monitor the T1 data stream without disturbing it. The
FAC Bantam test jacks allow a test set to intercept the
T1 data stream. Figure 4 shows the Bantam test jacks
in the ACT LIU Functional Block Diagram.
Repair services may be obtained by returning the
defective unit to the ADTRAN Repair Department
(see subsection ADTRAN Customer Service).
