Thismanualcontainstheinformationnecessarytooperateyour3MDetectionSystem,aswellassupplementalinformation
onhandlingalarms,orderingsupplies,andtrainingyourstaff.Italsocontainsimportantinformationaboutsecuritystrips
andcirculationaccessories.
Librarypersonnelshouldbefamiliarwiththemanualandwheretolocateitsotheycanrefertoitwhennecessary.
Hands-onpractice
Afterreviewingthismanual,yourstaffwillbenefitfromactualhands-onexperiencewiththedetectionsystemproductsthey
areexpectedtouse.Wesuggestyoustartbydemonstratingthepropertechniquesforapplyingsecuritystripstoitems.
Youmaywishtoconducttheactualpracticeasfollows:
1.Makesurethatalltheothersecuritysystemaccessoriesareinstalledandfunctional.
2.Leteachstaffmemberpracticeinstallingstripsandmarkersonlibraryitems.

Reviewofyourlibrary’ssecuritypolicies
Beforepracticinghowtorespondtoalarms,staffshouldbefamiliarwiththelibrary’ssecuritypoliciesastheyrelatetotheftof
materials.Tohelpstaffstayinformedofsecuritymeasures,yourpolicyshouldbeinwritingandkeptwithyourtrainingkit
alongwithanyotherproceduresyoufollow.
Itisparticularlyimportantforstaffmemberstoknowwhatproceduresthelibraryfollowswhentheftissuspectedorwhenit
isnecessarytocontactalocallawenforcementagency.
Acriticalphaseofstafftrainingconcernstheproperstepstotakewhenthesecuritysystemalarmsounds.Thevalueoftact
andcourtesywhenhandlingthisdelicatesituationcannotbeoveremphasized.Yourstaffmembersshouldreceiveasmuch
preparationaspossibletomakethemfeelcomfortable.Withthepropertraining,yourstaffwillbemorelikelytoeffectively
dealwithpatronswhoactivatethealarm.

Whattodowhenthealarmsounds
Thefollowingstepsaresuggestedproceduresonly.Werecommendthatallstaffdevelopacompleteunderstandingofthe
library’spoliciesandfollowthemasdirected.Theresponseshouldbeconsistentforallpatronscaughtinanalarm.Itisalso
importantthatstaffbecomefamiliarwithstateandlocallawsgoverningpatrons’rightsandresponsibilities.
RespondingtoAlarms
Respondingtoalarmsisasensitivesituationbutcanbehandledconfidentlyandeffectivelyaslongasyourlibraryhas
establishedproceduresandyourstaffmembersarefullytrainedinfollowingthem.
First,don’tpanic.Remaincalmandcourteous.Youcan’tbepositivethatthepersonwhotriggeredthealarmisstealing.Never
accuseanyoneoftheftbyword,byfacialexpression,orbytoneofvoice.Thealarmmayhavebeentriggeredaccidentally,
soalwaysrespondinapositive,non-threateningmanner.
AlarmScenario1
Thelibrarystaffdoesnotdesensitizeataggeditemwhencheckingoutthepatron’ smaterials,orthepatronaccidentally
removesmarkedmaterialsfromthelibrary.
Afteraskingthepatrontoreturntothecounter,atypicalresponsemightbe,"Excuseme,didIforgettocheckoutoneofyour
items?"or"Didyouperhapspickuponeofthelibrary’sbookswithyourownthings?”Thesearecourteousquestions,and
theydon’taccusethepatronoftheft.Besuretosmileandaskthequestionsinafriendly,non-threateningmanner.
Processanddesensitizeallitemsagain.Ifyoudiscoveranitemthathasn’tbeenproperlycheckedout,neveraccusethepatron
ofstealing.Simplyactasiftheerrorwasanoversight—itmorethanlikelywas.Ifthepatroncausesthealarmtosoundagain,
followthepolicythatyourlibraryhasestablishedforpossibletheftofmaterials.
AlarmScenario2
Apatrondenieshavinganylibrarymaterialsorrunsoutofthelibraryaftersoundingthealarm.
Followyourlibrary’spolicyfortheft.
Unwantedalarms
Yourdetectionsystemisunlikelytoexperiencefalsealarms.Occasionallyyoursystemmayalarmandyourstaffmayfindthat
thepatrondoesnothaveunauthorizedlibrarymaterials.Falsealarmsmaybecausedbyactivestripsonitemscarriedinto
thelibrarysuchasbooksfromanotherlibrary.
Falsealarmsaregenerallyinfrequentandwillvarydependingonthepatronsandtheproximityofyourlibrarytofacilities
thatarereleasingitemscontainingsecuritystrips.Becauseitisnotpossibletodistinguishbetweenfalsealarmsandalarms
withpotentialitemloss,allresponsestoalarmsmustbeconsistentandfollowyourmanagementpolicies.Ifpatronsseeno
responsetoalarms,thesystembecomeslesseffective.Whenyoudecidethatasecuritystriponanitemfromoutsideyour
librarycausedanalarm,followthesesteps:
1.Explaintheproblemtothepatron.
2.Verifythatallofthepatron’slibrarymaterialsareproperlycheckedout.
3.Allowthepatrontoexitthelibrary.
Manypatronswilllearnfromtheexperienceandwillnotcarryitemsthatmaycausealarmsintothelibrary.
Alarmlog
Thealarmlogisusedtokeeparecordofdetailsinvolvingalarmsthatoccur.SeetheDetectionSystemAlarmLog.Foreach
alarm,recordtheinformationonthelog.Keepingthislogup-to-dateprovidesakeytoolformonitoringsystemactivity.An
up-to-datealarmlogprovidesusefulinformationforlibrarymanagementandyour3Mservicerepresentative.

Your3MDetectionSystemconsistsofseveralcomponents,whichincludesecuritystrips,circulationaccessories,and
thedetectionsystem.
Thekeytotheeffectivenessofyoursystemisprotectingyourmaterialswithsecuritystrips.Onlywhenmaterialsareprotected
canyourdetectionsystemdetectsomeonetryingtoleaveyourlibrarywithoutproperlycheckingoutitems.
Theprimaryzoneofdetectionisareaswherepatronstypicallycarryitems.Theelectroniccoverageinthisareaisnot100%,
anditwillvarywiththeoptionsyouhaveandthetypeofsecuritystrips/markersyouuse.However,therateofdetectionis
effectivetodeterthelossofprotectedmaterials.
Checkingoutmaterialsisaccomplishedusingdesensitizersto“turnoff”thestripswhilere-sensitizersareusedto“turnon”the
stripswhenmaterialsarereturnedtothelibrary.Thisallowsforfullcirculationofalllibrarymaterials.
3MDetectionSystemsaredesignedtodetectsensitized3Msecuritystripsandthensoundanalarm,thuspreventing
unauthorizedremovaloflibrarymaterials.
Itisthissimple:
Markthematerials.
Circulatethematerialsusingdesensitizersandre-sensitizers.
Listenforthedetectionsystemalarmtosoundwhenunauthorizedremovalofmaterialsoccurs.Itisalsoimportantto
watchforsuspiciousactionssuchasholdingmaterialsabovetheheadormovingitemsaroundthelatticeswhenpassing
throughthedetectionsystem.

1.Ensurethatthepowercordisconnectedtoapoweroutlet.
2.Allow15secondsforthesystemtowarmup.
TurningtheSystemOff
Removepowerfromthesystembyoneofthefollowingmethods:
DisconnecttheACpowercordfromthepoweroutlet.
SetthefacilitycircuitbreakerforthesystemtotheOffposition.
Verifyingsystemoperation
Inspectyoursystemdailyforproperoperation.Toverifysystemoperation,walkthroughthesystemcorridorwithasecured
libraryitem.Thisshouldresultinanaudiblealarmandaflashingalarmlightatthetopofthelattices.Thereisnoneed
forrepetitivewalk-throughtesting.
Fusereplacement
Thefusesarelocatedonthesideabovethepowercordoftheelectronicsenclosure.
1.Disconnectthepowercordfromthepowersource.
2.Usingasmallflat-bladescrewdriver,removethefuseholder.
3.Replacethefailedfuseswitha5A250V5mmx20mmglassfuse.
4.Reinstallthefuseholder,andconnectthepowercordtothepowersource.
