instructions and safety rules. Make sure all items on the Dealer’s Pre-Delivery and Delivery Check Lists in
the Operator’s Manual are completed before releasing equipment to the owner.
The dealer must complete the Warranty Registrationincludedinthis manual.Both dealer and customer must
sign the registration which certifies that all Dealer Check List items have been completed. The dealer is to
return the prepaid postage portion to Woods, give one copy to the customer, and retain one copy. Note:

GENERAL INFORMATION
The purpose of this manual is to assist you in
operating and maintaining your mower. Read it
carefully. It furnishes information and instructions that
will help you achieve years of dependable perform-
ance. These instructions have been compiled from
extensive field experience and engineering data.
Some information may be general in nature due to
unknown and varying operating conditions. However,
through experience and these instructions, you
should be able to develop procedures suitable to your
particular situation.
The illustrations and data used in this manual were
current at the time of printing, but due to possible
inline production changes, your machine may vary
slightly in detail. We reserve the right to redesign and
change the machines as may be necessary without
notification.
WARNING
! Some illustrationsin this manual show
the mower with safety shields removed to
provide a better view. The mower should
never be operated with any safety shield-
ing removed.
Throughout this manual, references are made to right
and left direction. These are determined by standing
behind the equipment facing the direction of forward
travel. Blade rotation is clockwise as viewed from the
top of the mower.

BOLT TORQUE CHART
Always tighten hardware to these values unless a different torque value or tightening procedure is listed for a specific
application.
Fasteners must always be replaced with the same grade as specified in the manual parts list.
Always use the proper tool for tightening hardware: SAE for SAE hardware and Metric for metric hardware.
Make sure fastener threads are clean and you start thread engagement properly.
All torque values are given to specifications used on hardware defined by SAE J1701 & J1701M JUL96.

Safety is a primary concern in the design and
manufacture of our products. Unfortunately, our
efforts to provide safe equipment can be wiped
out by an operator’s single careless act.
In addition to the design and configuration of
equipment, hazard control and accident preven-
tion are dependent upon the awareness, con-
cern,judgement,andpropertrainingofpersonnel
involved in the operation, transport, maintenance
and storage of equipment.
It has been said “The best safety device is an
informed,carefuloperator.” Weask youto bethat
kind of operator.
TRAINING
! Safety instructions are important! Read all at-
tachment and power unit manuals; follow all safety
rules and safety decal information. (Replacement
manuals are available from dealer or , in the United
States and Canada, call 1-800-319-6637.) Failure to
follow instructions or safety rules can result in
serious injury or death.
! Know your controls and how to stop engine
and attachment quickly in an emergency.
! If you donot understandanypartof this manu-
al and need assistance, see your dealer.
! Operators must be instructed in and be capa-
ble of t he safe operation of the equipment, its
attachmentsand all controls. Do not allow anyone
to operate this equipment without proper instruc-
tions.
! Never allow children or untrained persons to
operate equipment.
PREPARATION
! Check that all hardware is properly installed.
Always tighten to torque chart specifications
unless instructed otherwise in this manual.
! Always wear relatively tight and belted cloth-
ing to avoid entanglement in moving parts. Wear
sturdy, rough -soled work shoes and protective
equipmentforeyes,hair, hands,hearingandhead.
! Make sure implement is properly attached, ad-
justed and in good operating condition.
! Make sure spring-activated locking pin or
collar slides freely and is seated firmly in tractor
PTO spline groove.
! Make sure driveline shield tether chains are
attached to the tractor and equipment as
instructed. Replace if damaged or broken and
check that driveline guards rotate freely on drive-
line before operating equipment.
! Before starting tractor, check all equipment
driveline guards for damage and make sure they ro-
tate freely on all drivelines. Replace any damaged
guards. If guards do not rotate freely on drivelines,
repair and replace bearings before operating.
! Power unit must be equipped with ROPS or
ROPS CAB and seat belt. Keep seat belt securely
fastened. F alling off power unit can result in death
from being run over or crushed. Keep foldable
ROPSsystems in “lockedup” position at all times.
! Inspect chain, rubber or curtain shielding
before each use. Replace if damaged.
! Remove accumulated debris from this equip-
ment, tractor and engine to avoid fire hazard.
! Make sure all safety decals are installed.
Replaceifdamaged.(SeeSafetyDecalssectionfor
location.)
! Make sure shields and guards are properly
installed and in good condition. Replace if dam-
aged.
! A minimum20% of tractor and equipmentweight
must be on tractor front wheels with attachments in
transportposition.Wi thout this weight, tractorcould
tip over causingpersonalinjuryordeath.Theweight
may be attained with a loader, front wheel weights,
ballast in tires or front tractor weights. Weigh the
tractor and equipment. Do not estimate.
! Inspect and clear area of stones, branches or
other hard objects that might be thrown, causing
injury or damage.
OPERATIONAL SAFETY
! When this equipment is operated in populated
areas or other areas where thrown objects could
injure persons or property, full chain or rubber
shielding (which is designed to reduce the possi-
bility of thrown objects) must be installed. If this
machine is not equipped with full chain or rubber
shielding, operation must be stopped w hen any-
one comes within several hundred feet.
! Never direct discharge toward people, animals
or property.
! Keep bystanders away from equipment.
! Never go underneath equipment lowered to the
ground or raised, unless it is properly blocked and
secured. Never place any part of the body under-
neath equipment or between moveable parts even
when the engine has bee n turned off. Hydraulic
system leak down, hydraulic system failures, me-
chanical failures or movement of control levers can
cause equipment to drop or rotate unexpectedly
and cause severe injuryordeath. FollowOperator’ s

influence of alcohol or drugs.
! Operate only in daylight or good artificial light.
! Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away from
equipmentwhileengineisrunning.Stayclearofall
moving parts.
! Always comply with all state and local lighting
and marking requirements.
! Never allow riders on power unit or attach-
ment.
! Power unit must be equipped with ROPS or
ROPS CAB and seat belt. Keep seat belt securely
fastened. F alling off power unit can result in death
from being run over or crushed. Keep foldable
ROPSsystems in “lockedup” position at all times.
! Always sit in tractor seat when operating con-
trols or starting engine. Securely fasten seat belt,
place transmission in neutral, engage brake and
ensure all other controls are disengaged before
starting tractor engine.
! Operate tractor PTO at RPM speed stated in
“Specifications” section.
! Do not operate tractor PTO during transport.
! Look down and to the rear and make sure area is
clear before operating in reverse.
! Do not operate on steep slopes.
! Do not stop, start or change directions sud-
denly on slopes.
! Use extreme careand reduceground speed on
slopes and rough terrain.
! Watch for hiddenhazards on the terrainduring
operation.
! Stop tractor and implement immediately upon
striking an obstruction. Turn off engine, remove
key, inspect and repair any damage before resum-
ing operation.
! Before dismounting tractor or performing any
servi ce or maintenance, disengage power to imple-
ment, lower the 3-point hitch and all raised
components to the ground, operate valve levers to

blades. Substitute blades may not meet original
equipment specifications and may be dangerous.

! Tighten all bolts, nuts and screws to torque
chart specifications. Check that all cotter pins are
installed securely to ensure equipment is in a safe
condition before operating.

! Wear gloves when installing belt. Be careful to
prevent fingers from being caught between belt
and pulley.

extended and, if released suddenly, can cause
personal injury.

! Block equipment securely for storage.
! Keep children and bystanders away from
storage area.

erators should be familiar with the mower and tractor
and all safety practices before starting operation. Read

This mower is designed for lawn and grass mowing.
It is not designed for rough conditions or heavy weed
mowing. It is equipped with suction type blades for
best results in lawn mowing.
Recommended mowing speed for most conditions is
fromtwotofivemph.

Top Link Attachment (Figure 2)
When the cutting height is adjusted, adjust tractor top
link until mower top link attachment point “A” is
aligned vertically with mower hitch pin “B.”

Attaching Mower to Tractor
The standard 1-3/8” 6B spline driveline with a QD
yoke is used to connect mower to tractor.
Attach the mower hitch pins to lower tractor lift arms
and secure. Attach tractor top link (1), Figure 2, to
mower top link bracket attachment point “A.” Connect
the driveline to the tractor PTO shaft and attach tether
chain to tractor drawbar, Figure 3.
WARNING
! Make sure spring-activated locking
pin or collar slides freely and is seated
firmly in tractor PTO spline groove.
Adjust the tractor lower 3-point arm anti-sway devices
to prevent mower from swinging side to side during
transport.

Cutting Height Adjustment (Figure 4)
IMPORTANT
! Avoid low cutting heights. Striking the
ground with blades produces one of the
most damaging shock loads a mower can
encounter. Allowing blades to contact
ground repeatedly will cause damage to
mower and drive.

Verify that the same amount of spacers are under all
caster arms. Loosen cap screws that attach caster
arm assembly to deck. Set mower on the ground.
Retighten cap screws. This equalizes the clearance in
the bolt holes.
Best mowing results will be obtained with front of
mower level with, or slightly lower than, the rear.
Cutting height is controlled with front and rear caster
wheel adjustment.

To raise rear of mower, move caster adjustment
spacers under caster arms.
To raise front of mower, move spacers under front
caster wheel arms.
Remember, measurement at location “A” Figure 4
should not be less than location “B” and should not be
over 1/2” greater than location “B.”
Tractor Top Link Adjustment (Figure 6)
Adjust tractor top link so mower is level at 16” between
caster wheel and ground (dimension C” Figure 6).
This will allow the mower to follow ground contour.
Front Caster Arm Configuration
for RD6000 & RD7200 Only (Figure 5)
The RD6000 and RD7200 front casters can be set in
two positions. This is accomplished using right and
left offset caster arms. The figure shows a right offset
assembly. The direction of the offset is defined by
looking from the mounting hole “A” towards the pivot
tube “B.” The pivot tube should be higher than the
mounting holes. When viewing the arm in this way, the
direction of the offset can be determined.
Figure 5 shows the two possible configurations for the
RD6000 and RD7200 front caster arms. The inner
position allows the outside edge of the mower to be
used for trimming under items such as shrubs or
fences. The outer position provides the most clear-
ance for rear tractor tire interference. To change
configurations, remove the cap screws and nuts and
move the arms from one side of the machine to the
other. Secure with hardware.
The rear caster arms should be mounted as shown.
The RD8400 front caster arms are fixed and cannot
be changed.
Front Caster Wheel Interference Check
(Figure 6)
IMPORTANT
! Do not operate tractor and moweruntil
this interference check has been per-
formed. If you change tractors, you must
perform the check for that mounting.
Perform this check with all of the spacers and springs
above the caster wheel arm. This will place the caster
wheels in their highest position and provide the lowest
cutting height for the mower.
Raise mower with tractor hydraulics to 16” at
dimension “C” or maximum height of tractor lift,
whichever is less.
Pivot both front caster wheels forward and check that
there is clearance between caster wheels and tractor
tires.

Front Roller (Optional)
The caster wheels and side skids effectively reduce
scalping in most cases. However, you may encounter
areas where the caster wheels and/or side skids drop
into depressions and allow center of mower to contact
ground and scalp. An optional front roller may be
installed to minimize scalping.
Pre -Operation Check List
(OWNER RESPONSIBILITY)
___Review and follow all safety rules and safety
decal instructions on pages 4 through 8.
___Check that all safety decals are installed and in
good condition. Replace if damaged.
___ Check that all shields and guards are properly
installed and in good condition. Replace if damaged.
__ Check that chain shielding is in good condition
and replace any damaged chain links.
___Check that all hardware and cotter pins are
properly installed and secured.
___ Check to ensure blades are sharp, in good condi-
tion, and installed correctly . Replace if damaged.
___Check that equipment is properly and securely
attached to tractor.
___Make sure driveline spring-activated locking pin
or collar slides freely and is seated firmly in tractor
PTO spline groove.
___Make sure the driveline guards and tether chains
are in good condition. Guards must rotate freely
on driveline. Fasten tether chains as instructed to
the tractor and the equipment.
___Inspect area and remove stones, branches or
other hard objects that might be thrown, causing
injury or damage.
___Do not allow riders.
___Check all lubrication points and grease as
instructed in “Service, lubrication information.”
Make sure the PTO slip joint is lubricated and that
the gearbox fluid levels are correct.
___Set tractor PTO at correct rpm for your equip-
ment.
___Make sure tractor ROPS or ROPS CAB and seat
belt are in good condition. Keep seat belt securely
fastened during operation.
___Before starting engine, operator must be in tractor
seat with seat belt fastened. Place transmission
in neutral or park, engage brake and disengage
tractor PTO.
Operating Technique
Power for operating mower is supplied by tractor
PTO. Operate PTO at 540 rpm. Know how to stop
tractor and mower quickly in case of an emergency.
Should mower become plugged, causing belt to slip
for over two seconds, maneuver equipment into a
previously cut area and allow mower to clear
accumulated material. Continue running at least two
minutes, allowing pulleys to cool. Stopping the mower
in contact with a very hot pulley will bake and ruin belt.
CAUTION
! Stoptractorandimplementimmediate-
ly upon striking an obstruction. Turn off
engine, remove key, inspect and repairany
damage before resuming operation.
Proper ground speed will depend upon the terrain, the
height, type and density of material to be cut.
Normally, ground speed will range from two to five
mph. Tall dense material should be cut at a low speed;
thin medium-height material can be cut at a faster
ground speed.
Always operate tractor PTO at 540 rpm. This is
necessary to maintain proper blade speed and
produce a clean cut.
Under certain conditions, tractor tires may roll some
grass down and prevent it from being cut at the same
height as the surrounding area. When this occurs, re-
duce your ground speed, but maintain PTO at 540
rpm. The lower ground speed will permit grass to at
least partially rebound.
In general, lower cutting heights give a more even cut
with less tendency to leave tire tracks. However, it is
better to cut grass frequently rather than too short.
Short grass deteriorates rapidly in hot weather and in-
vites weed growth during growing seasons. Follow
local recommendations for the suitable cutting height
in your area.
Tips
WARNING
! Inspect and clear area of stones,
branches or other hard objects that might
be thrown, causing injury or damage.
Extremely tall material should be cut twice. Set mower
at a higher cutting height for the first pass. Then cut
at desired height, at 90° to the first pass.
Remember, sharp blades produce cleaner cuts and
require less power.
Analyze area to be cut to determine the best
procedure. Consider height and type of grass and
terrain type: hilly, level or rough.
Plan your mowing pattern to travel straight forward
whenever possible. Mow with uncut grass to the right.
This will distribute the clippings over the cut area.

Uneven Terrain
WARNING
! Do not operate on steep slopes.
! Do not stop, start or change directions
suddenly on slopes.
! Use extreme care and reduce ground
speed on slopes and rough terrain.
! Watch for hidden hazards on the ter-
rain during operation.
Pass diagonally through sharp dips and avoid sharp
drops to prevent “hanging up” tractor and mower.
Practice will improve your skills in maneuvering rough
terrain.
Removing Mower from Tractor
(Figure 7)
Disengage tractor PTO, raise mower with 3-point hitch.
Disconnect mower driveshaft from tractor PTO.
Collapse driveshaft as far as possible and store it in
PTO hanger bracket to prevent ground contact. Place
blocks under mower side skids. Lower mower onto
blocks, disconnect mower from tractor 3-point hitch,
and carefully drive tractor away from mower.

The information in this section is written for operators
who possess basic mechanical skills. Should you
need help, your dealer has trained service technicians
available. For your protection, read and follow all
safety information in this manual.

CAUTION
! Always wear relatively tight and belted
clothing to avoid entanglement in moving
parts. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work
shoes and protective equipment for eyes,
hair, hands, hearing and head.
BLOCKING METHOD
(Figure 8)
Do not work underneath mower unless it is properly
attached to the tractor and blocked securely. When
properly attached, the unit will be anchored to
minimize front to rear movement.
Raise mower completely, set tractor brakes, turn
engine off, remove key, block tractor wheels front and
rear, and disconnect mower driveline from tractor.
The only approved blocking device for this mower is
a jackstand with a load ratingof 1000 pounds or more.
One jackstand under each corner of the mower (four
total) must be installed before working underneath
this unit.
Install jackstands under each corner of the mower.
When blocking, you must consider overall stability of
the unit. Just blocking under the unit will not ensure
your safety. The working surface must be level and
solid to support the loaded weight of the jackstands.
Test jackstands stability before working under any
portion of the mower.

LUBRICATION INFORMATION
(Figure 9)
Do not let excess grease collect on or around parts,
particularly when operating in sandy areas.
Figure 9 shows the lubrication points. The accompany-
ing chart gives the frequency of lubrication in operating
hours, based on normal operating conditions. Severe or
unusual conditions may require more frequent lubrica-
tion. Some reference numbers have more than one
location; be sure you lubricate all locations.

Use a lithium grease of #2 consistency with a MOLY
(molybdenum disulfide) additive for all locations. Be
sure to clean fittings thoroughly before attaching
grease gun. When applied according to the lubrication
chart, one good pump of most guns is sufficient.
Use SAE 90W gear lube in the gearbox. Oil level is to
be up to plug on side of gearbox. See Figure 9.
Check gearbox daily for evidence of leakage at both
seals and the gasket between the housing and cover.
If leakage is noted, repair immediately. There may be
a small amount of lube emitted from the vent plug; this
is not considered leakage.
Overfilling the gearbox will cause the excess gear
lube to blow out vent plug. The gear lube could then
ruin the belt.
Driveshaft Lubrication
Lubricate the driveshaft slip joint every 8 operating
hours. Failure to maintain proper lubrication could
result in damage to U-joints, gearbox and driveshaft.
Lower mower to ground.
Apply grease at three locations as shown in Figure 9.
Raise and lower mower several times to distribute
grease.

One of the major causes of belt failure is improper
installation. Before a new belt is installed, check
pulley shafts and bearings for wear. Check pulley
grooves for cleanliness. Make sure spindles turn
freely and without wobble. If grooves require cleaning,
moisten a cloth with a non-flammable, non-toxic
degreasing agent or commercial detergent and water.
Avoid excessive force during installation. Do not use
tools to pry belt into pulley groove. Do not roll belt over
pulleys to install. This can cause hidden damage and
premature belt failure.
IMPORTANT
! Use care when installing or removing
belt from spring-loaded idler at step 5.
Springs store energy when extended and,
if released suddenly, can cause personal
injury.
1. Disconnect idler spring from deck lug “I”.
2. Slide belt underdrive pulley “A”andoveridlerarm.
Position belt around drive pulley “A”.
3. Loosen bolt holding belt guide “G and swing it
awayfrompulley “B”.Routebelt aroundpulley“B”,
idler “C” and pulley “D” as shown.
4. Make sure belt is on drive pulley “A”, route around
idler“F”,andconnectidlerspringtolug“I” ondeck.
5. Grasp belt between spindle pulley E”, spring
loaded idler “F” and spindle pulley D”. Pull spring
loaded idler with belt to obtain enough belt length
torouteitoverpulley“C”.Makesurespring-loaded
idler pivots freely with belt installed.
6. Adjust belt guide “G to provide 1/16” to 1/8”
clearance from belt. Tighten bolt to 85 lbs.-ft.
BLADE SERVICING
Inspect blades for condition and proper installation each
time before operation. Replace any blade that is bent,
excessively nicked, worn or has any other damage.
Small nicks can be ground out when sharpening.

Remove belt shields.
Install spindle lock wrench (1) onto spindle pulley as
shown. Remove cap screw (6) which has RIGHT HAND
THREADS. Remove cup washer (5) and blade (4).
Shoulder washer (3) will not normally come off unless
intentionally removed.

CAUTION

placement blades. Substitute blades may
not meet original equipment specifica-
tions and may be dangerous.
RD6000 Only

Install spindle lock wrench (1) onto spindle pulley as
shown. Install shoulder washer (3) (if removed), small
end up. Make sure blade cutting edge is positioned to
lead in clockwise rotation, as viewed from top of mower .
Excessive blade slipping can cause cup washer to
burn and lose its clamping force. Inspect cup washer
to determine if it is burned or has lost its clamping
force. Replace as necessary.
Install cup washer on cap screw with crown next to
cap screw head, then place blade on cap screw.
Install cap screw and blade assembly into spindle.
Torque cap screw to 125 lbs.-ft. Remove blade
wrench from pulley. Replace belt shields.
RD7200 and RD8400 (Figure 12)
Place cap screws (3) through outer holes in blade and
spindle shaft. Make sure blade cutting edge is
positioned to lead in clockwise rotation, as viewed
from top of mower. Place locknuts (4) on screws and
torque to 85 lbs.-ft.
Blade Sharpening (Figure 13)
Remove blades.
Always sharpen both ends at the same time to
maintain balance. Follow original sharpening pattern.
Do not sharpen blade to a razor edge. Leave from
1/32” to 1/16” blunt edge. Do not sharpen back side.
IMPORTANT
! When sharpening blades, be sure to
balance them. Unbalanced blades will
cause excessive vibration which can dam-
age blade spindle bearings. Vibration may
also cause structural cracks in mower
components.

DANGER
! When this equipment is operated in
populated areas or other areas where
thrown objects could injure persons or
property, full chain or rubber shielding
(which is designed to reduce the possibil-
ity of thrown objects) must be installed. If

chain or rubber shielding, operation must

For reference, the grease fitting is in the top of the
spindle shaft.
Permatex 3D Aviation Form-A-Gasket
or equivalent
is recommended as a sealant.
Spindle Removal
Remove blade from spindle.
Remove belt from pulleys.
Remove jam nut and washers from top of spindle
shaft.
Disassemble split taper bushing (located on top of
pulley) by removing the two bolts and inserting them
into the threaded holes of bushing flange. Tighten
them alternately to remove split taper bushing.
Remove pulley.
Spindle Disassembly (Figure 15)
Remove bolts attaching spindle to mower frame and
remove spindle.
Remove grease fitting.
Place spindle assembly in press and press shaft
down through housing.
Remove seals from housing.
Remove bearing cups from housing by placing a
punch in slots provided and driving out. Alternate
punch positions from side to side. Take care to
prevent housing damage.
