1. Replacement of the Centrifuge Model
The former Hettich laboratory centrifuge ROTANTA 46 RSC and the current ROTANTA 460 R differ in,
among other things, the way of data transfer. ROTANTA 46 RSC is equipped with an opto data
connector box, which converts data from the centrifuge into serial transmission, whereas the
ROTANTA 460 R includes a RS232 interface.
The following describes how to modify an cobas p 471/ 671 centrifuge system to deploy both
centrifuge variants.
NOTICE
For cobas p 471/ 671 systems, the new ROTANTA 460 R centrifuge and the previous
ROTANTA 46 RSC can be used in mixed mode operation.
1.1 Physical installation of the new Hettich ROTANTA 460 Robotic
CAUTION
Before installing a centrifuge, make sure that the voltage indicated on the
rating plate is the same as the mains voltage.
1.1.1 Centrifuge replacement

Open the maintenance door(s) on the rear of the system and disconnect the cables from the
centrifuges.
Detach the cables from the cable holders.
Remove the centrifuge(s).
WARNING
Crushing hazard: A centrifuge is very heavy. Installation must be carried
out by qualified personnel! Improper handling may cause serious injury.
Do not step under the load and keep fingers and hands away from the
bottom when the centrifuge is lifted and moved.
NOTICE
It is strongly recommended to use the special lifting/ moving hoist which can be ordered from
Roche PVT GmbH quoting the order number 52560000002.
The lifting/ moving hoist enables a single person to safely remove and install a centrifuge. Furthermore,
it serves to transport a centrifuge over even surfaces.

1.1.2 Cable laying and connections
• On the rear of the system, unwrap the spiral guard from the cables and discard the data cable to
the opto coupler.
NOTICE
The opto coppler box, which is no longer used, can be left in the system.

Connect the power supply cable(s) to the left and the RS232 cable(s) to the right.
Feed the cable(s) through the cutout and guide it/ them to the computer.
Connect the serial cable(s) with the RS232 ports on the rear of the computer.

• Wrap the spiral guards around the cables and fix them in place with the cable holders provided.

• Check that the pullout can move freely.
CAUTION
Make sure that the pullout is not obstructed and
the cables are not pinched.
1.2 Centrifuge addressing
• After installation, check the centrifuge(s) for correct addressing.
cobas p 471: Centrifuge = Addr. A
cobas p 671: Left centrifuge 1 = Addr. A, right centrifuge 2 = Addr. B
Please refer to the appropriate Hettich manual; section 'Set the address at the centrifuge'.

1.3 Software installation
Please follow these steps for software installation:

Power the system and the centrifuge(s) on.
Save the User System ('Administration Æ User Backup').
Insert the 'Modification Centrifuge' CD.
Go to menu item 'Administration Æ Data Installation'.
Press/ click the [OK] button.

Select 'Centrifuge is ROTANTA 460 R ' by pressing [1].

• Using the numeric keys, select Centrifuge 1 with [1] and/ or Centrifuge 2 with [2],
depending on which of the centrifuges is/ are to be configured.

NOTICE
Seen from in front, centrifuge 1 is located to the left, centrifuge 2 to the right.
To abort the installation process, select 'Cancel' by pressing the respective numeric key
and press [ENTER].

Select the item 'Proceed' by pressing the respective numeric key and press [ENTER].
A message of successful configuration will be displayed, prompting you to finish configuration.
Once centrifugation configuration is concluded, remove the CD from the drive and restart the
system.
After changing the centrifuge configuration, the new centrifuge(s) will be displayed on screen during
boot up.
1.3.1 Troubleshooting
If any problems occur during or after the configuration procedure please refer to the below
troubleshooting:
Upgrade aborted
If during the upgrade a message appears, informing you that upgrading has been aborted, check the
following and repeat the installation:
− Has the appropriate centrifuge been correctly assigned
(Centrifuge is ROTANTA 46 RSC or 460 R)?
− Is the respective centrifuge switched on?
− Are all cables properly connected?
NOTICE
If other problems occur during configuration, make a note of the message displayed before you
terminate the installation and consult Roche PVT Software Support.
1.4 Inspection log book for Hettich laboratory centrifuges

Please work through the original Hettich inspection log book for the appropriate centrifuge.
1.5 Test run
Perform a test run according to the cobas p 471/ 671 Service Manual/ Checklist.
CAUTION
The system must not be put into routine operation without
successful test run.
