5. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Personnel who shall install, maintain or repair this equipment must read the safety

information below before starting work.

Denitions and symbols

minor to moderate injury, or serious damage to the product.

General Safety Precautions

WARNING

This equipment is defined as Class 1 in EN 62368-1:2014 and must be EARTHED.

WARNING

This equipment is intended for continuous operation and as such should be

permanently connected to the mains supply. This unit does not contain an

external mains switch. Each compact unit requires a 3A fused connection unit,

returning to a breaker clearly marked EVCS DO NOT TURN OFF.

WARNING

Voltages in excess of 30V RMS AC or 50V DC are considered Hazardous and

in certain circumstances can be lethal .This product contains wiring and

terminations that are energized to 230V RMS AC mains. Before attempting to

remove this component, ensure the Mains Power Supply and Battery Backup

have been disconnected.

WARNING

No user serviceable parts. Testing, maintenance or repair with Mains Power

(and/or battery) connected should only be undertaken by personnel who are

trained and have taken adequate precautions.

WARNING

If the units are distributed around a site it is essential all units are on the same

mains phase, as they are classified TEN 230V, powering from different phases can

mean a 440V potential can be present in a unit during a major fault incident.

5. Important Safety Information

WARNING

Indoor use only. Do not expose this unit to rain or moisture.

CAUTION

VoCALL 16 must only be installed by certified Eaton personnel i.e. an Eaton

Customer Service Engineer or certiﬁed installer. In case of violating these

requirements the warranty provided will not apply and EATON will not be held

legally accountable.

CAUTION

Before handling PCB, operator should get rid of any electrostatic charge.

Always handle PCBs by their sides and avoid touching any components.

This product must only be disposed of in

accordance with the WEEE directive.

6. Receipt/unpacking

On receiving the unit, verify that the catalog number and unit options stated on

the shipping container match those stated on the order/purchase form. Inspect the

equipment upon delivery. Report any crate or carton damage to the carrier prior to

accepting the delivery, and have this information noted on the freight bill.

Remove all packing material from the unit. Check the unit for any signs of shipping

damage. If damage is found after unpacking, report it to the Freight Company and

EATON. Retain the packaging materials for the carrier to review.

Storage

It is recommended that the unit should be stored in its original shipping box/crate

until it is to be installed. The unit should be stored in a location where:

The ambient temperature is -5ºC to 40ºC

•

The relative humidity is 0% to 95%, non-condensing

•

The environment is dry, clean and non-corrosive

•

The unit will not be subjected to high shock or vibration conditions

7. About this manual

This manual contains important instructions that must be followed during installation,

start-up, configuration and customization, operation and maintenance of the

VoCALL 16 range of products. All instructions must be read before installing and

operating the equipment. This manual should be saved for future reference.

This manual is aimed at specialist personnel, who are responsible for the installation,

commissioning and maintenance of VoCALL 16 emergency voice communication

system (EVCS) and personnel who are responsible for operating the system.

This manual covers operation of VoCALL 16 devices in network mode i.e. more than

one panel connected together are part of installation.

Operation of VoCALL in standalone mode i.e. single panel operation, are covered in

‘EVCS standalone manual’.

9.1 Introduction

VoCALL 16 EVCS is a high specification, digital, loop –wired, fully addressable,

monitored, and secure bi-directional communication system compliant with

BS5839-9:2011 (abb. Pt9).

VoCALL 16 range of products comprises of two types of devices:

9.6 Features

•

Compliant with BS5839-9: 2011 (abb. Pt9): VoCALL 16 supports the features

required to support designing, installing, commissioning and servicing according to

BS 5839-9:2011 Part 9: Code of practice for the design, installation, commissioning

and maintenance of emergency voice communication systems.

•

Loop wired configuration: VoCALL 16 outstations are connected on a loop.

Studies have shown this approach can support up to a 75% reduction in cable

installation costs. i.e. cables, tray, fixings, conduit and most importantly, time.

•

Simple and easy installation: VoCALL 16 Panel can support up to 16 loop

powered Outstations. Outstations can be of variant Type A/B. Pictorial installation

instructions are supplied with all units. No additional accessories are required to

complete the installation.

•

Simple and easy network extension: VoCALL 16 network can be extended

easily by connecting main / network panel in daisy chain fashion on a loop. Up

to 32 panels can be connected on the loop. Each panel can support up to 16

Outstations. This enables installation capacity 512 Outstations on the network.

No additional devices are required to extend the system.

•

Easy and intuitive network configuration: Auto addressing functionality along

with Web based application for configuration of the system provides an easy and

intuitive experience for commissioning the site. This enables reduction in time

taken for system commissioning, reduce probability of mistakes and enables fault

diagnosis from central location.

•

Fault tolerant design and continuous fault monitoring: The system design

enables a fault tolerant loop installation which ensures high availability of

outstations – isolators protect the signal path from loss of operation due to a

single cable fault on the loop. Fault on the network is notified within 100 seconds

of its occurrence.

•

Complex call scenarios: Complex network call scenarios configuration possible to

support different installations - university campus, high rise application.

•

Superior audio quality: VoCALL 16 is a fully digital system. The panel and

outstations communicates using a digital data which provides high immunity to

electrical noise and ensures superior audio quality for

maximum intelligibility.

•

Extensive system operation monitoring and logging: VoCALL 16 provides

extensive and detailed internal logging of all significant events providing a record

for fault finding, tracking and usage compliance.

•

User interface: Large LCD screen, keypad and a simple menu system allows ease

of use during system configuration, monitoring and day to day operation.

•

Easy and secure firmware upgrade: VOCALL 16 facilitates upgrade of all devices

on network from a central location. The firmware is encrypted and digitally signed

ensuring secure upgrade.

9. Overview

•

User configuration: VoCALL 16 facilitates a maximum of 10 user login / profiles

to be created per panel. Each user’s profile can be configured independently

allowing system administrator flexibility to support the needs of most demanding

applications. For details, refer to Section 11.

•

Secure communications: VoCALL 16 has been designed within Eaton’s stringent

cyber security guidelines. The system is designed to protect against unauthorized

and malicious users. For more information refer to Appendix 7.

•

Storage: VoCALL 16 has the capacity to store 2000 transactional records within

each panel history log. These logs are also continually saved onto a 4 GB SD card

provided with panel.

10. Installation

10.1 Placement guidelines

The VoCALL 16 system is intended for indoor usage. Outstations should not be

installed outdoors unless an additional IP65, or better housing, is used and cables are

installed to prevent the ingress of moisture.

General guidelines – Panel

There must be at least one main panel in a building or complex.

Panel(s) should be located:

1. Close to the main fire alarm panel or a repeater fire panel, in an area of low

fire risk.

2. In an area with low background noise, particularly during an emergency.

Fire alarm sounders or Voice Alarm speakers should not be located near

to the panel.

3. Preferably in a manned control or security room. In a control room, the panel

should be within easy reach from the operator’s normal position.

General guidelines – Outstation

Outstation location should be as per application and in accordance with local

regulations guidelines and standards.

1. Fire and rescue service assistance: Outstations should be provided on all

floors of the building served by firefighting stairs, and in the firefighting lobby

to each firefighting stair. An additional outstation should be provided at each

fire and rescue service access point.

2. Evacuation Management: Outstations should be provided on all escape

staircases on every floor of the building.

3. In an emergency, communication with disabled building occupants:

Outstations should be provided in all refuges and, where appropriate, an

outstation should be provided adjacent to the evacuation lift on each floor.

They should be mounted at a height of between 900 mm and 1.2 m above the

floor in an easily accessible, well illuminated and conspicuous position, free

from obstruction.

ote: N Background noise levels in the vicinity of devices should be kept as low as

possible, and in any case less than 40dB.

10.2 Mounting instructions

MX16 and MX16 – SSC

1. Take the unit out of the packing material.

2. Check the content against checklist provided in Appendix 1.

Front display: MX16 panel contains a keypad and a screen user interface. Handset

is secured behind a locked door.

3. To lift top cover, remove the screws as shown in step A. Lift the cover from

bottom and push back to disengage clips. Disconnect ground cable for

easy operation.
