Installation Instructions
Receivers are designed as the remote control device for operation of a motorized pan/tilt unit and a motorized lens unit. Since
camera sites are often a great distance from the operator’s viewing location, these Receivers provide the operator with positive
control of the camera site. Receivers also provide the operator with control of auxiliary devices such as lights, doors, etc., at the
camera site. Receivers are individually coded for each camera site, so only the camera under observation will be controlled by
the operator.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The 1646 Receiver is a single channel Receiver for control of
motorized pan/tilt and lens units used with Matrix Switching
Systems. The 1646 is used to control a 12VDC pan/ tilt and a
motorized lens (zoom, focus, and iris) of a single camera, and
to control auxiliary functions at a camera site.
The 1646 Receiver has both Preset Scene and Auto Pan
capabilities. The Preset Scene allows for the selection of
predetermined camera scenes while Auto Pan allows for the
selection of an automatic camera panning sequence.
1646 Receivers obtain either control code instructions or RS-
232 commands. Control code instructions originate from
Switching System CPU's, System Input Bays, or intervening
Code Distribution Units, while RS-232 commands originate
from Code Distribution Units or computers.
The 1646 Receiver also provides a Local Test Mode, which is
a test used to confirm correct setup functions, verify preset
feedback, confirm correct wiring, etc. Refer to the Local Test
Mode section, page 7.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
FEATURES
Pan/Tilt and Lens Control
The 1646 Receiver provides drive outputs to control camera
Pan/Tilt and Lens motors. The J6 connector, located on the
side of the unit, contains all the connections required for the
control of the Pan/Tilt and Lens units. (Refer to Figures 4 & 5
for the location of J6.) Table 1 provides the pan/tilt and lens
motor voltage and current ratings for this unit.
Table 1 - Pan/Tilt and Lens Ratings
Function Voltage Current
PAN Motor -12 to +12 VDC 1.5 Amps
TILT Motor -12 to +12 VDC 1.5 Amps
IRIS Motor +/-7 to +/-12 VDC .05 Amps
FOCUS Motor +/-7 to +/-12 VDC .05 Amps
ZOOM Motor +/-7 to +/-12 VDC .05 Amps
Note: Certain Pan/Tilt units may require voltages other than
those noted. If necessary, call our Service Center for
additional information or assistance (1-800-442-2225).
Auxiliary Control
The 1646 Receiver provides two Form "C" relays for auxiliary
operation. The relay outputs have both Normally Open and
Normally Closed contacts for different types of auxiliaries.
These auxiliaries can be either latching or momentary types.
Maximum relay contact ratings are 1 Amp, 24VAC; resistive
load, 2A, 30VDC.
Auto Sense
The 1646 has automatic sensing of pan/tilt and lens servo
voltage direction at initial power up. This feature determines
the polarity of the connected reference voltages in order to
determine proper motor direction control.
Preset Scene
The 1646 Preset Scene feature allows the operator to preselect
a scene and recall that scene via keyboard command(s).
Preselection of a scene is available only on Pan/Tilt and Lens
units with a feedback potentiometer. The Preset Scene, also
known as a Programmed Scene, is stored at the Receiver with
non-volatile memory.
When controlled by a Matrix Switching System, the 1646
Receiver can be programmed for 71 preset scenes for the
camera. (Note: This differs from the AD standard of 72
presets per camera.) Refer to the installation and operation
manuals for the particular Matrix Switching System for
programming procedures. Note that the setting of position 1
and 2 on DIP Switch S3 (see Receiver Configuration Setup,
page 4) determines if "Pan/Tilt Setup" scenes are enabled for
the unit. All units are shipped from the factory with preset
scenes enabled.
Auto Pan
The 1646 Auto Pan feature provides an automatic pan of the
camera using preselected start and stop points. When initiated
by the operator, automatic camera panning operates either
continuously or for a 30 minute period, depending on the Setup
option chosen. (Note that Pan/Tilt must have the preset
capability).
To configure Auto Pan using keyboard commands:
1. Position the camera to the desired Auto Pan start position
(first Auto Pan boundary).
2. Enter 70, then press SET SHOT on the keyboard.
3. Position the camera to the desired Auto Pan stop position
(second Auto Pan boundary).
4. Enter 71, then press SET SHOT on the keyboard.
5. To start the Auto Pan feature, enter 72 SHOT. 72 SHOT
uses the positions stored in Set Shots 70 and 71 to
determine Auto Pan operation.
Note: Preset Shots 70 and 71 can be used both as the end stops
of the Auto Pan, and as normal preset scenes for
individual callup through the keyboard.
Heater
This standard feature allows the unit to operate in low
temperature environments. The heater is located on the PCB
to provide the maximum heating for the minimum power used.
The heater turns on when the temperature inside the housing
drops to 40
0
F.

FEATURES
INSTALLATION
Preparation
Several user configuration switches must be set (see SETUP
instructions, page 4). If the unit is not configured correctly,
damage to the unit, and any other device connected to it, may
result. Check all wiring and cabling before applying power.
Mounting
The 1646 Receiver is an outdoor unit but can be used indoors
also. Mount the unit with the hinges on the left. To minimize
the voltage drop in the wiring, mount the unit near the camera
to be controlled. For maximum heater performance mount the
unit with the hinges on the left.
Different mounting procedures are recommended when
attaching the unit to different surfaces. Mount the unit with
four 1/4-inch bolts appropriate to the type of mounting surface.
See Figure 2 for mounting dimensions.
When mounting to wood studs:
Use lag bolts (with a drilled pilot hole) or wood screws which
will penetrate the wood for a minimum of 1 1/4 inches.
When mounting to concrete:
Use lead or plastic anchors, or expansion bolts, with at least a
10-pound pullout rating. Install according to the
manufacturer's instructions.
When mounting to steel surfaces:
Drill four bolt clearance holes and use bolts with lockwashers
and nuts.
When mounting to drywall (gypsum board):
Material must be at least 1/2 inch thick, and the unit must be
mounted with toggle bolts.
The housing dimensions which include the NEMA-4 box are 5
3/8-inches high x 8 3/4-inches wide x 11 5/16-inches in length.

Lens Voltage
The lens output voltage of the 1646 can be adjusted to
accommodate a range of camera lens servo voltages. The lens
output voltage can be varied from 7 to 12VDC with the
potentiometer labeled "R3". R3 is located on the main PCB
(see Figure 8, page 10).
The easiest way to activate any lens function is to use the
Local Test Mode feature and then verify the output of the 1646
with a voltmeter, see page 7. The factory setting is 10 VDC.
Pan/Tilt Voltage
The 1646 is designed to work with a DC pan/tilt unit which
requires a positive to negative voltage of 12VDC with respect
to ground. The pan/tilt voltage can be varied from +12 to -12
VDC via keyboard commands. The maximum current for a
pan/tilt drive connected to a 1646 is 1.5 amps for each axis.
Each axis has a current protection device which automatically
resets upon removal of an over-current condition.

CONNECTIONS
To connect the 1646M or 1646S Receivers to external devices,
refer to the following text and to the typical connections
illustrated in the Appendix.
Code Line Connections for Control Code (model 1646M)
1646M Receivers connect directly to other control code
devices. When using 1646M Receivers with Control Code, the
Code Line connection to the Receiver is made with user-
supplied, shielded, 2-wire twisted pair, Belden 8760 or
equivalent (for Plenum, use Belden 88760 or equivalent). The
maximum code line length is 5000 feet.
The Code Terminal Connector, J1, is a 3-position terminal
strip located on the side of the unit (see Figure 4, page 8). The
terminal is marked "B (black) "S" (shield), and "W" (white).
Before Starting
1. Check the power line to verify that the power is off.
Wiring:
2. Insert and screw down the White code wire into the
screw terminal marked "White".
3. Insert and screw down the Shield wire into the screw
terminal marked "Shield".
4. Insert and screw down the Black code wire into the
screw terminal marked "Black".
The Receiver is designed for a “Star” or “Home Run”
connection to a Code Distribution Unit (see Figure 6). The
Receiver has an internal 120-ohm terminating resistor.
If the Receiver is used in a “Daisy Chain" configuration (see
Figure 7), the 120-ohm terminating resistor must be removed
from all but the last Receiver. This resistor termination can be
eliminated by removing J6 on the Receiver Module PCB.
Refer to Figure 9, page 10, for the location of J6 on the
Receiver Module PCB. A maximum of three devices may be
daisy-chained on any single output. A 120-ohm termination
must be provided on the last piece of equipment on each line.
The green LED labeled "CODE" on the 1646 Receiver
illuminates when the unit is receiving valid code. The LED
stays illuminated for five seconds after the code is removed. If
this LED does not light, a problem in the transmission of the
code, a poor or loose connection, improper termination, or a
defective Receiver may be indicated.

1646S Receivers typically connect to other RS-232 devices via
a wall-mount, 8-pin Terminal Box, HP0047.
Matrix Switching Systems, 1983 modems, RS-232 keyboards,
and other user-supplied RS-232 compatible devices, are
connected via a JJ0007 modular cable to the Terminal Box.
The Terminal Box connects to the 1646S 6-pin connector with
18 AWG shielded, computer-grade cable. For distances of
1000 ft (330 m) or less, between the Receiver and similar
devices, a direct connection using RS-232 cable with mating
connectors may be used. For distances over 1000 ft., a link
using modems is required (see the Appendix, RS-232 Typical
System Connection drawings). Refer to Figure 10 for typical
Code Line "Star" Connections.
The terminal definitions for the 1646S 6-pin connector are
shown in Table 6.
