Oppo Sonica DAC is a high-resolution digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and high-resolution audio player that can also be used as a music streamer. It has a variety of inputs and outputs, including USB, optical, coaxial, and analog, making it compatible with a wide range of audio sources. The Sonica DAC can play music files from USB drives, computers, and servers, and can also stream music from online services such as TIDAL. Introduction
In pursuit of outstanding digital to analog audio playback, OPPO Sonica DAC is equipped with an
ES9038PRO32bitHyperStreamDACchip.AstheflagshipoftheESSSABREPROseries,theES9038PRO
sets new benchmarks for audio performance. Sonica DAC’ s power circuitry includes a linear power
regulatordrawingfrom a
massivetoroidal powertransformer, which providesa very clean androbust
powersupplytotheaudiocomponents.
Sonica DAC can be used as a standalone highperformance DAC, providing digital inputs like Optical,
CoaxialandasynchronousUSBDACthatsupportPCMupto768kHz32bitandDSDup
to22.5792MHz
(DSD512).
Sonica DAC is also a high resolution audio player that is capable of decoding up to 24bit / 192 kHz
resolution FLAC, WAV andApple Lossless files, as well asDSD64files at 64x sample rate. You canalso
playmusicfilesfromUSBdrivesattached
totheSonicaDAC,fromcomputersandserversconnectedvia
EthernetorWiFi,orfromamobiledevicerunningtheSonicaapp.
As amember ofthe Sonica WiFi speaker family,Sonica DAC is alsoa music streamer, allowingyou to
stream music from your smartphone and tablet
using the Sonica app, AirPlay, or Bluetooth. When
groupedwithSonicaWiFispeak ers,SonicaDACcanplaymusicstreamedtothespeakergroup,andyou
can also connect an existing analog audio sourceto the multiroom speaker groupusing Sonica DAC’ s
AUXinput.
SonicaDACprovidesXLRbalancedand
RCAstereooutputs.Theaudiooutputpathisfullybalancedfrom
the DAC chip all the way to the XLR jacks. Even the RCA output signal is derived from the balanced
output.Thebalanceddesignprovidesbettercommonmodenoiserejectionandimprovessignalquality.
Italsoprovidesbetterchannel
separationbyeliminatingthecommon groundreturnpath.You canset
either output to volumecontrolled or bypass, allowing Sonica DAC to be connected to preamps or
directly to power amplifiers. A 12V trigger input and output allows you to turn on and off the entire
audiosystemwithoneclick.
SonicaDACsportsanaluminumchassiswithclassicvolumeandsourceselectionknobs.A2.8inchOLED
display complements the brushed metal front panel, showing the current volume and detailed audio
information.

SonicaApp
TheSonicaappisafreesmartphoneandtabletappcontrollerfortheOPPOSonicafamilyofproducts.It
enablesyoutoplaymusicstoredonyourmobiledevice,fromasupportedmusicstreamingservice(e.g.,
TIDAL),froma mediaserveronyourhomenetwork,orfromaUSBdriveplugged
intotheUSBportof
theSonica DAC. WiththeSonicaapp,youareincompletecontrol,andcanchoosewhatmusictoplay
andwhatdevicetoplayfrom.
The Minimum OS requirements for the Sonica app are Android 4.0 or iOS 8.0. The minimum OS
requirements for the
USB DAC are Windows 7 or Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. Availability and
performanceofcertainfeatures,servicesandapplicationsaredevice‐andnetworkdependentandmay
notbeavailableinallareas.AirPlayworkswithiPhone,iPad,andiPodtouchwithiOS4.3.3orlater,Mac

OutputConnections
Sonica DAC offers both RCA and XLR Balanced outputs. The output level is controlled by the Volume
Knob.Youcanbypassthevolumecontrolifyoursetuprequiresafixedleveloutput.SeeBypassModein
theSettingsandAdvancedOperationssectiononpage10fordetailedinstructions.
RCAStereoAudioOutput
RCA is the most common analog audio connection. If your preamplifier, power amplifier, or active
speakersoffer RCA analoginputs, you mayuseapair ofRCAaudiointerconnectcables toconnectthe
SonicaDAC’ sRCAStereoAudioOutputtotheRCAinputofyourdevice.

XLRBalancedAudioOutput
XLRbalancedconnectionoffersbettercommonmodenoiserejectionandimprovedsignalqualityover
theRCAconnection.Ifyourpreamplifier,poweramplifier,oractivespeakersofferXLRbalancedinputs,
youmayuseapairofXLRaudiocablestoconnecttheSonicaDAC’ sXLRBalancedAudioOutputtothe
XLRinput
ofyourdevice.
TriggerInput&Output
You can connect the Trigger Output of Sonica DAC to the trigger input of a preamplifier or power
amplifier using a 3.5 mm monotomono minijack cable. When Sonica DAC is turned on, the Trigger
Outputwillsupplya+12Vvoltagesignaltoautomaticallyturnontheconnected
preamplifierorpower
amplifier.TheTriggerOutputcansupplyupto100mAcurrent.
The Trigger Input of Sonica DAC can be connected to the triggeroutput of another deviceand Sonica
DACwillturnonandofftogetherwiththeconnecteddevice.
Theuseof TriggerInput&
Outputisnotrequired.Youcan alwaysmanuallyturnon oroffSonicaDAC
usingthePowerButtononthefrontpanel.

BasicOperations
PowerON/OFF
WhenSonicaDACisinitiallyconnectedtoACpower,itremainsinstandbymodeandthePowerStatus
Indicatorwillstayred.PressthePowerButtontoturniton.ThePowerStatusIndicatorwillturnblue
andtheOPPOlogowillappearonthescreen.
Once the Sonica DAC is
on, pressing the Power Button again will turn it off. Sonica DAC does not
respondtonetworkstreamingrequestswhenitisoff.
SourceSelection
The active input source can be selected by rotating the Source Selector / Function Knob. The Front
PanelDisplaywillshowaSourceSelectionscreenwithfourinputsources:USBDAC,OPTICAL,COAXIAL,
and AUX IN. The currently selected input source is indicated by a check mark ().
Rotate the Source
Selector/FunctionKnobineitherdirectiontoselectanewinputsourceandpresstheSourceSelector
/FunctionKnobtoswitchtoyourselection.
In addition to the above input sources that are selectable using the Source Selector and Front Panel
Display, Sonica DAC
also supports additional music sources such as network streaming, Bluetooth,
AirPlay, and USB disk drives. These additional sources are selected through the Sonica app or
automatically by connecting the devices. While the Sonica DAC is playing from any of the additional
musicsources,selectinganinput sourceby rotatingtheSource
Selector/FunctionKnobwilloverride
theexistingsource.

VolumeControl
Rotating the Volume Knob clockwise or counterclockwise will increase or decrease the volume level.
Whenthevolumelevelisreducedtotheminimum,aMuteiconwillappearonthescreen.
Note:WhentheactiveinputsourceisinBypassmode,volumecontrolisdisabledandtheoutputwill
be
atthefullvolumelevel.SeeBypassModeintheSettingsandAdvancedOperationssection onpage10
fordetailedinformation.
UsingSonicaDACasaTraditionalDAC
SonicaDACcanbeusedasastandalonehighperformanceDAC.TheUSBAudioinputsupportsPCMup
to 32bit/ 768 kHzand upto DSD512. The coaxialand opticaldigital audio inputssupport PCM up to
192kHzandDSDoverPCMuptoDSD64.Inorderto
maintainthehighestpossibleaudioquality,audio
from the USB, coaxial, and optical inputs is routed directly into the ES9038PRO Sabre DAC chip. It is
thereforenotpossibletostreamaudiofromtheseinputstootherSonicaspeakersonthenetwork.
USBAudioInput(TypeB)
You can connect your computer directly to Sonica DAC using a USB Type A to USB Type B cable. This
allows your computer to function as the digital playback source with any music library management
softwareyouprefer,whileusingtheSonicaDACtoachieveoptimaldigitaltoanalogaudioperformance.
ThedigitalsignalwillbeconvertedbytheES9038PRODACandsenttothelineleveloutputs.Theinput
sourceislabeledUSBDAContheSourceSelectionscreen.

Note: Depending on the operating system and playback software used, driver software and specific

OpticalDigitalAudioInput
You can connect a device with an optical digital output intothe Optical Digital Audio Input of Sonica
DACusinganopticaldigital(alsoknownasaTOSLINKcable).Thedigitalsignalwillbeconvertedbythe
ES9038PRODACandsentto theanaloglineleveloutputs.Thisinput sourceis
labeledOPTICALonthe
SourceSelectionscreen.
CoaxialDigitalAudioInput
YoucanconnectadevicewithacoaxialdigitaloutputintotheCoaxialDigitalAudioInputofSonicaDAC
using a coaxial digital (75 ohm) cable. The digitalsignal will be converted by the ES9038PRO DAC and
sent to the analog line level outputs. This input source is labeled COAXIAL on
the Source Selection
screen.
SettingsandAdvancedOperations
Settings and advanced operations of the Sonica DAC can be accessed by pressing and rotating the

SourceSelector/FunctionKnob.Thebasicoperationsare:
Press the Source Selector / Function Knob to show the first settings and advanced operations
screen.
IftheSourceSelector/FunctionKnobispressedagainimmediatelywithout anyotheroperations
occurring on the current screen, the next settings
and advanced operations screen is shown. You
willneedtopresstheSourceSelector/FunctionKnobmultipletimeswithoutturningitinorderto
accessadditionalsettingsandadvancedoperationsscreens.
On any setting screen, the current setting is indicated by a check mark (). Rotate the Source
Selector/FunctionKnobtomovetheselectioncursor.Thehighlightedselectionbecomesactiveif
youpresstheSourceSelector/FunctionKnob.SonicaDACreturnstoitsnormalstatusscreenafter
aselectionismade.
Onanyadvancedoperationsscreen,thecurrentstatusortitleisshown.Rotate
theSourceSelector
/ Function Knob to move the selection cursor to any available action. The highlighted action is
executedifyoupresstheSourceSelector/FunctionKnob.Dependingontheactionyouselect,you
maybepromotedforadditional operations.
Theavailablesettingsandadvancedoperationsscreens

BypassMode
BypassmodesetsSonicaDAC’soutputleveltofullanddisablesthevolumecontrol.Thisisusefulifyou
areconnectingSonicaDACtoadevicethathasitsownvolumecontrol,suchasapreamplifieroranA/V
receiver.TheavailableBypassoptionsare:
VariableVolume(default)The
outputlevelisvariableandcontrolledbytheVolumeKnob.
Bypass AUX Input‐The AUX Audio Input will be in the Bypass mode while all other sources are
controlled by the Volume Knob. This option is useful if the source that is connected to the AUX
AudioInputalready
hasavolumecontrol.
BypassAllInputs‐AllinputsourceswillbeinBypassmode.

ScreenDimmerSetting
YoucanadjustthebrightnessoftheFrontPanelDisplay.Theavailableselectionsare:
High‐The Front Panel Display will operate at highbrightness. Pleasenote thatrunningtheFront
Panel Display in high brightness mode may reduce its life and cause image retention issues
(burnin).
Dim
(default)‐TheFrontPanelDisplaywilloperateatadimmedbrightnesslevel.
Off‐The Front Panel Display will be turned off. Any user interaction will turn on the display
temporarily.Thedisplaywillautomaticallyturnoffagainafterafewseconds.
BluetoothConnection
Topair SonicaDACtoa devicevia Bluetooth,you canactivateSonica DACspairing modebyselecting
Enter Pairing Mode from the Bluetooth Connection screen. (If you use the Sonica app, you can also
activate Bluetooth pairing mode by setting Pairing Mode to ON under Settings in the app). When
Pairing Mode is ON, enable Bluetooth on your device and pair it with Sonica DAC according to your
device’s instructions. The Front Panel Display will show the device name when pairing is successful.
SonicaDACwillexitPairingModeaftertwominutesifpairingisunsuccessful.
Fordevices thathave
alreadypairedwith Sonica DAC,enable Bluetoothon bothSonicaDAC andyour
portabledevice,chooseSonicaDACunderpaireddevicestoconnect,andstartstreaming.
ThefollowingBluetoothoperationsarepossibledependingonthecurrentconnectionstatus:
Enter Pairing Mode‐Sonica DAC will turn on Bluetooth and will be
ready to pair. Any existing
Bluetoothconnectionandpairingwillbedisconnected.
DisconnectIfadeviceisalreadyconnected,selectingthisoperationwilldisconnectthedevice.
DisableBluetoothThisoperationwillturnofftheBluetoothradio.Selectthisoperationifyoudo
notplantouse
Bluetooth.
EnableBluetooth‐IfBluetoothisdisabled,selectingthisoperationwillenableBluetoothagain.


NetworkConnection
BeforeyoucanusestreammusictoSonicaDACviaWiFiorEthernet,youneedtoconnectSonicaDAC
toyournetwork.ThisisdonebyusingtheSonicaapp.Pleasefollowthesesteps:
Step 1: Connect Sonica DAC to power and turn it on. If you plan to
use a wired networkconnection,
connectSonicaDACtoyournetworkusinganEthernetcable.
Step2:Connectasmartphoneortablettoyournetwork.

DisableNetworkIfyoudonotplantouseanynetworkstreamingfeaturesofyourSonicaDAC,you

disableitsnetworkfunctions.
Enable Network‐If Sonica DAC’ s network is turned off, selecting this operation will turn on the
networkagain.Sonica DAC willtry to reconnectto thepreviously configurednetworkviaWiFior
Ethernet.
The network connection status is indicated by an icon near the top
right corner of the Front Panel

DACwillautomaticallyturnoffandonafterresettingtofactorydefaultsettings.

FirmwareVersionDisplay
Firmware is the system software that controls the features and functions of your Sonica DAC. The
FirmwareVersion screendisplaysthe currentfirmware versions installed inthe Sonica DAC. Thereare
three parts of the firmware, each with its own version number: the main firmware, the MCU
(MicroControllerUnit)firmware,
andtheUSBDACfirmware.
UpgradingtheFirmware
FromtimetotimeOPPOwillreleasefirmwareupdatestoimproveproductfeaturesandfunctions,orto
fix issues reported by customers. For the best user experience, we strongly suggest upgrading the
firmwaretothelatestrelease.
Therearetwowaystoupgradethefirmware:
ViaNetwork‐SonicaDACwill
automaticallydownloadandinstalltheupgradethroughtheInternet.
YouwillbepromptedviatheSonicaappwhenanewfirmwar eversionisavailableforinstallation.
Via USB‐Sonica DAC will install the upgr ade from a connected USB drive which contains the
firmwarefile.Thefirmwarefileandinstructions
canbefoundonOPPODigital’swebsite.
TheUSBDACfirmwaredoesnotchangeoften.Ifanewversionbecomesavailable,thefirmwarefileand
instructionswillbemadeavailableonOPPODigital’swebsiteunderthe“SupportsectionfortheSonica
DACproduct.
UsingSonicaDACasaHighResolutionDigitalPlayer
The Sonica app allows you to navigate through your music files and use the Sonica DAC as a high

resolutiondigitalplayer.YouwillbeabletoplaymusicfilesstoredonaUSBdriveattachedtotheSonica
DAC, on your mobile device, or from a DLNA server on your home network. Sonica DAC must be
connectedtothesameWiFiorwirednetworkasyourmobiledevice
thatrunstheSonicaapp.
PlaybackfromaUSBDrive
You can transfer music files from your computer to a USB drive and play them through Sonica DAC.
TherearetwoUSB Type A portson Sonica DAC.Plug theUSB drivetoeither port, anduse theSonica
apptobrowseandplaythesefiles.
 
PlaybackfromaDLNAServer
If you store your music files on a home network server or NAS device, and the server or NAS device
supportsDLNA,youcanplayyourmusicbyhavingSonicaDACdirectlyaccessthefilesoverthenetwork.
Make sure that your DLNA server or NAS device is on the same
network as Sonica DAC, and use the
Sonicaapptobrowseandplaythemusicfiles.

Note:ForplaybackfromaUSBdriveoraDLNAserver,musicfileswithPCMsampleratesupto24bit/
192kHzandDSD64inDSForDFFformatsaresupported.NotallfileformatsaresupportedbyallDLNA
servers,soexperiencemayvarybasedonthe
hardwareandsoftwareinuse.Thefulloriginalresolution
is retained during playback if Sonica DAC is not grouped together with any other Sonica products for
multiroomstreaming. IfSonica DAC is grouped with other Sonica speakers for multiroom streaming,
music will be downsampled to 44.1 kHz or
48 kHz in order to meet the bandwidthlimitations of the
network.
UsingSonicaDACforMusicStreaming
MusicStreamingviaNetwork,AirPlay,andDLNA
OnceSonicaDACisconnectedtothenetwork,youcanusetheSonicaapptoplaymusicstoredonyour
mobile device, from a supported music streaming service, or from a media server on your home
network.SonicaDACalsosupportsAirPlayandDLNAstreamingwhenyourmobiledeviceison
thesame
network.
To use AirPlay, start playing a song from your local music library or music streaming app on your iOS
device,taptheAirPlaybuttonintheiOSControlCenter,andselecttheSonicaDACtobeginstreaming.
TouseDLNA,openanappthatisDLNAcompliant,
startplayingasongintheappandselectSonicaDAC
tobegincasting.DLNAcastingsupportwillvaryfordifferentdevicesandapps.

MusicStreamingviaBluetooth
Connect a Bluetoothcapable device such as a smartphone or tablet by enabling Bluetooth on your
deviceandthenpairingitwithSonicaDAC.RefertoBluetoothConnectionintheSettingsandAdvanced
Operations section on pages 11 for pairing instructions. You can play music from your device either
throughits
locallibraryorothermusicapps.
AUXAudioInput
YoucanconnectanaudiodevicewithastereoanalogoutputintotheAUXINofSonicaDACusingapair
ofaudiointerconnectcables.Theinputsignalwillbedigitizedandmadeavailableforstreamingtoother
Sonica speakers on your network, and at the same time will beconverted
back to analog via theRCA
andXLRoutputs.ToselectthissourceasthestreamingaudioinputforyourSonicaspeakers,selectAUX
INasthesourcefromtheSonicaapporusingtheSourceSelectionscreenontheFrontPanelDisplay.
Certainanalogaudiodevices,suchasphono
preamplifiersandturntables,mighthaveaseparateground
wire.Connecting the ground wire to the groundterminal on Sonica DAC isoptional. Ifconnecting the
groundwiretoSonicaDACdoesnotresultinlowernoise,itisnotnecessaryforyoutodoso.
Note: Input signal from
AUX IN passes through analogtodigital and digitaltoanalog conver sions
before it reaches the XLR or RCA outputs. Although the signal quality is still excellent, this is quite

into different groups, you are able to play the same music on multiple
speakers simultaneously or
differentmusicondifferentspeakers.UsetheSonicaapptoaddandremoveSonicaDACtoagroup.
Note: If Sonica DAC is grouped with other Sonica speakers for multiroom streaming, music will be
downsampledto44.1kHzor48kHzinorderto
meetthebandwidthlimitationsofthenetwork.Forthe
best audio quality, it is recommended that you remove Sonica DAC from a speaker group when not
