Introduction
General
This document describes the configuration procedure of the
Varian ProStar 220, 230, and 240 pump driver. It also explains
how to build a control method for this driver, how to start and
view a running acquisition and what actions are available during
an analysis.
The ProStar 220, 230 and 240 Solvent Delivery modules are
single piston pumps which deliver flow in a linear dynamic range.
The 220 is designed for isocratic (single solvent) applications
only.
Proportioned delivery of multiple solvents can be achieved by the
230 and 240 pumps. Up to 3 solvents may be run isocratically or
in gradients with the ProStar 230 SDM. The 240 SDM is a
quaternary HPLC system which allows the user to run any of four
solvents isocratically or to proportion, and run a gradient with
three solvents.

Building a Method
Creating a New Method
The method contains parameters for instrument control, data
acquisition, chromatogram processing, and editing of final
results. To initially set up a method, it is not necessary to define
all of the sub-method sections; however, the instrument control
section must be filled in prior to starting an acquisition.
1. To create a new method, select the FILE / NEW METHOD
option from the Galaxie Chromatography Data System main
menu.
A wizard guide will appear and provide assistance during the
first steps of method creation:
2. Choose the system (chromatograph) associated with the
method. A method is created for a particular system. When
starting an acquisition, the name of the system that performs
ProStar 220/230/240 SDM Control Manual - 12 - 03-914947-21:4
the acquisition must be correct, since method access is
limited only to those methods associated with this system.
3. Once this field is completed, click on the Next button to
move to the next step of the method creation:
4. Enter the New Method Name in the first field. In the
Description field, enter information concerning the method
(optional).
5. Once these two fields have been completed, click on the OK
button. The new method is created and is opened with
default parameters in the Galaxie Chromatography Data
System.
The next step is the definition of each of the method
sections.
The instrument control method section must be defined in
order to start an acquisition. In the following part of this
guide, only the control section of the method for the ProStar
220, 230, and 240 pumps is detailed. Other parameters such
as Injection Volume, Vial and Rack number could be
necessary. They are defined in the acquisition sub-method
part.

all the available solvents:
Water Acetone
Acetonitrile Benzene
Carbon tetrafluoride Chloroform
Cyclohexane Dichloroethane
Diethyl Ether Dimethylformamide
Dioxane Ethanol
Ethyl Acetate Methylene Chloride
Methanol n-heptane
n-hexane o-dichlorobenzene
Propanol Tetrahydrofuran
Toluene 2-Methylformamide
The activation of the scrolling lists A, B, C depends on the model
of the pump previously configured in the Galaxie Configuration
Manager (isocratic, ternary or quaternary pump).
Enter the Equilibration time in the corresponding field.
A programmed equilibration is intended to cause a smooth
changeover in solvent composition in automated applications,
and is executed at the end of the run or when a new method with
a different flow rate or composition than the last conditions is
activated. Equilibration is not done if the current conditions are
the same as the T=0 conditions or the Equilibration value is set
to 0.
During this equilibration period a gradient change from the
current solvent composition and flow rate to the Time=0
composition and flow rate occurs. The gradient composition
change takes 10% of the equilibration time, with the new
conditions being held for the remaining 90% of the time.
Enter the Run time of the pump in the corresponding field. This
parameter allows the gradient to continue after the acquisition is
finished.
Program a flow and/or a composition gradient. Each step of the
program includes time, flow and/or composition new values. The
Pumps Gradient Chart represents the progression of these
parameters.

End of analysis behavior:
In the scrolling list, select either to stop the pump or leave the
pump on at the end of the analysis (Quick Start or sequence).
If Hold is selected, the pump will continue to work at the last
time-table flow and composition.
If Equilibrate is selected, the pump will perform an equilibration
step to return to the initial conditions and will continue to work at
the initial conditions.
If Stop Pump (end of analysis) is selected, the pump will stop at
the end of each run.
If Stop Pump (end of sequence only), the pump will stop only
when the sequence is finished.
Enter in the corresponding fields the minimum and maximum
pressure limits. The pressure range is 0 to 410 Bar, (0 to 5946
PSI, and 0 to 40996 kPa).

Relays Control
This type of pump has six external event relays which may be
time programmed. Each step of the program includes time and
state values for each relay.
NOTE: The relay 1 is used to select between the two positions of a low pressure solvent
switching valve connected to the “A” proportioning valve in case of 240 SDM
quaternary HPLC system. This allows the user to run any of 4 solvents
isocratically, or to proportion a gradient with 3 solvents.
