Installation and Configuration
Installing the Driver Software
The Galaxie software must already be installed before installing
the driver software (refer to the Galaxie User’s Guide).
You must have administrator rights to install the driver. The
Varian drivers must be installed only on the server.
1. When you insert the Galaxie CD into your CD drive, the CD
Browser will start automatically. If it does not, you can launch
the Browser by running Install.exe from the root directory of
the CD.
2. From the CD Browser click on the Install button and then
click on the Drivers for Varian LCs or GCs button.
3. Then click on the Drivers for Varian LCs button.
The following screen will appear:

4. Click on the Next button, read and accept the License
Agreement and enter your driver Serial Number in the
corresponding field. The serial number is provided on your
driver serial number card and is different from the Galaxie
serial number.
Note that the serial number is case sensitive.

Then press the Next button and click on Finish at the end of
the installation.
5. If you want to reinstall or upgrade your drivers, you will
need to run the setup (steps 1, 2 and 3) again.
The following screen will appear:

Then press Next and the drivers will be automatically
reinstalled or upgraded. Click on Finish at the end of the
installation to exit the maintenance mode.
6. To see which drivers are installed, select Tools from the
Galaxie Configuration Manager main menu and select
Install Instrument Control Drivers. The following screen
containing the installed devices appears:
The
button can be used for installing beta or pre-release drivers.
Use this button only when directed by a technical support representative.
Configuring the Varian ProStar 335
Communications
Ethernet Communications
The Varian ProStar 335 Photodiode Array Detector uses
Ethernet as the method of communications for instrument control.
ProStar 335 Photodiode Array Detector Control Manual - 8 -
The Varian ProStar 335 Photodiode Array Detector uses TCP/IP
(Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) to
communicate over the Ethernet network and needs to be given a
unique IP address to identify the instrument. A static IP address
can be also configured in the Varian Prostar 335 with the driver.
A BOOTP Server is used to send IP addresses to TCP/IP
devices.
The BOOTP Server lists Ethernet addresses along with the IP
addresses that are to be assigned to the corresponding devices.
1. Start the BOOTP Server Configuration program from the
START / PROGRAMS / GALAXIE menu. The following
screen appears:
2. First press the
button to set the
parameters of the network where the instruments and the
BOOTP server are located. The following screen appears:

Enter a Name for the network card, the Subnet mask and IP
Gateway addresses.
More than one network card may be assigned by clicking on
. Delete the selected line by clicking on . Delete all
the lines by clicking on
.
3. Click on the
button and the BOOTP
server will automatically find the instruments which are
requesting an IP address and will list their Ethernet (MAC)
addresses. The following screen appears:
Power on the needed instruments; their Ethernet (MAC)
addresses will appear a few seconds later.

Select the needed instruments and click on .
The corresponding instruments are then listed in the main
screen:
4. Complete the mandatory fields by entering the IP address
assigned to the selected instrument, its Name or Description
and the Network interface previously assigned to the
instrument.
NOTE: Do not check the Star 800 MIB box when assigning a Varian Prostar 335
Photodiode Array detector.
To set up 800 MIB BOOTP, use the Star 800 MIB Configuration program from the
START / PROGRAMS / GALAXIE menu.

5. By clicking on the button, an instrument can be
assigned manually. In this case, enter the Ethernet address
(MAC address) which allows the computer to locate the
instrument and to upgrade the IP address without reloading
it every times it changes.
Complete the other fields (IP address, Name, etc.) as
described above.
Delete the selected line by clicking on
or click on to
clear all lines in the table.
6. Click on the
button to see details about
the requests sent by the instruments, the answers of the
BOOTP server, or the errors.
7. When all the instruments have been correctly configured,
click on OK or Apply to save the changes.
NOTE: The BOOTP server provided by the Galaxie Chromatography Data System is
installed during the installation of the Galaxie software.
Configuring the Driver
The driver software configuration is done in the Galaxie
Configuration Manager when a new chromatographic system is
created.
Creating a New System
1. Select the Stations/Systems tab and then select the
Systems item on the top tree view. Right click and a pop-up
menu appears.
2. Select New to open the Create / Edit System wizard.

3. Specify the system name and an optional description, then
press Next.
4. Select which station is the Acquisition/Control Server for the
system. Of course, only one Data Acquisition/Control
Server can be named as the owner. The Sequence Engine
Host option is reserved for a particular Galaxie
Chromatography Data System application called External
sequence, and not provided in the standard Galaxie
Chromatography Data System software. By default accept
the name of the acquisition server. Then, press Next.
5. In the last screen of this wizard (shown below), install the
device to be configured in the desired instrument by clicking
on
.

This button gives access to the following screen where all
the available drivers are listed. Select the Varian ProStar
335 Photodiode Array Detector driver.
6. Click on the OK button. The Create / Edit System screen
shown above appears again with the name of the newly
installed device.

Highlight a device and click on to remove
the selected device from the list.
7. When all the required devices are installed, click on the OK
button to accept the list. A new screen appears and asks if
the instrument devices should be configured. If the answer
is Yes, the instrument device configuration screens appear.

Configuring the Varian ProStar 335 Photodiode Array
Detector
Click on the button corresponding to the Varian ProStar
335 driver and the configuration screen appears.
The toolbar allows you to easily scroll through the configuration
windows:
to select the first configuration window.
to select the previous configuration window.
to select the next configuration window.
to select the final configuration window.

Communication Window
In the IP Address field, enter the IP address of the instrument.
Press the button
to search the subnet for all connected
Varian Prostar 335 instrument. The following window will be
displayed.

Once an IP Address is configured, press the button
to activate the communication with the
instrument.
Check the Synchronise with other modules box to enable this
option. When this option is enable the Varian Prostar 335 will be
started from a contact closure a will be able to receive a fault
signal directly from another instrument.
Check the Enable Ready In box to enable this option. When this
option is enable the Varian Prostar 335 waits a ready in signal to
go to the ready state.
NOTE: For more details about the BOOTP configuration, refer to the Ethernet
Communications section.

Option Window
Select the Cell Type according to the one physically installed in
the detector, 4 cell types are selectable the 9x0, 9x1, 4x0 and
4x0.15.
Check or uncheck the Normalize check box to activate or not
this option. This option is active only with a 9x0 flow cell and
scales the absorbance results to a 10 mm flow cell to allow
absorbance comparison. The scale factor applied to the
absorbance is 10/9.
If a prep flow cell is selected, the user will be able to enter a
Cell Ratio. The ratio is used for extended range operation. The
ratio for each flow cell is determined at the factory and is
included with the flow cell. The detector will always operate in
extended range mode with a prep flow cell.
