IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Environmental Conditions
The DVN 5000 Desktop Series server should be stored and/or installed in an
environment that conforms to the following specifications:
Item Specification
Operating Temperature 32 to
95F (0 to 35C)
Storage Temperature 14 to
140F (-10 to 60C)

Also, do not store or install the DVN 5000 in a dusty environment, which could
affect the operation of the server.
Voltage, Frequency, and Current
The DVN 5000 Desktop Series has a voltage switch on the back of the unit to select
115 VAC or 230 VAC power (see pages 11 and 12). Verify that the voltage selected
matches the local power supply value.
Failure to set the correct voltage on the back of the DVN may damage
the unit once power is supplied.

Protection
A 115 VAC branch circuit overcurrent protection rated at 15 A is required for the
building installation wiring.
In accordance with NEC (National Electric Code) Articles 725 and 800,
a listed primary protector suitable for protecting against exposure to
power conductors, lightening, and electrical transients must be used
with any cable extending from the DVN unit to outside the building.
Inserting the Hard Disk Drive in the Drive Bay
Before connecting and applying power to the DVN 5000, you must insert and secure
the hard disk drive into the unit’s drive bay (front of unit). The disk is packaged
separately to prevent shipping damage.
T
o insert the hard disk drive and into the drive bay:
1. Open the door on the front of the unit to access the drive bay.
2. Insert the hard disk drive into the drive bay slot.
DRIVE BAY
LOCKING SWITCH
Left (Locked)/Right (Unlocked)
3. Press the hard disk drive into the slot until the drive is secure.
4. Lock the drive into place by moving the locking switch to the left.

Connecting the Power
Do NOT apply power to the DVN 5000 until the hard disk drive is securely
inserted and latched into the drive slot. Failure to follow this procedure may
result in a boot disk failure. See “Inserting the Hard Disk Drive in the Drive
Bay” on page 4. To recover from a boot disk failure, see “Boot Disk Failure
Recovery” on page 33.
Comply with the following requirements:
Power outlet shall be equipped with earthing (ground) protection.
The outlet shall be installed near the equipment and shall be easily accessible.
Use the appliance coupler as the disconnect device (see the illustrations on
pages 11 and 12). However, disconnecting the power cord from the appliance
coupler should only occur when the unit power is shut
down properly. See
“Switching the Server On and Off” for information on properly turning off
power to the unit.
An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is recommended. If using a UPS,
read the section “Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)” on page 6 before
continuing.
T
o connect the power:
1. Connect one end of the power cord to the appliance
coupler of the server.
2. Plug in the other end of the power c
ord to the power outlet.
If using a UPS, refer to the device’s user documentation for proper
power connections to and from the device. See also “Uninterruptible
Power Supply (UPS)” on page 6.
Switching the Server On and Off
The DVN 5000 Desktop Series server is equipped with a main power button located
on the front of the server that turns the power on and off. When the unit is powered
on, the Power LED indicator will be lit.
WA RN I NG
Do not open the top of the unit when the server is powered on.
Except for the lithium battery (see page 7), there are no user
serviceable parts inside the DVN. In addition, opening the DVN 5000
Desktop during the unit’s warranty period will tear the warranty seal
and void the unit’s warranty. See also page 8.

NOTE
The mouse, monitor, and any external storage devices must be connected
to the server before turning on the power. See pages 11 and 12 for the
locations of the mouse, monitor and external storage device connectors.
To power down the unit, click the Shutdown button on the RemoteControl Main
screen (directly from the DVN 5000 server only – not from a client), or press and
hold the main power button until th
e system begins the shutdown process.
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
Johnson Controls strongly recommends providing power to the DVN 5000 Desktop
unit via a listed UPS for temporary, backup power in the event of a power failure.
Recommended Manufacturer: APC®
Recommended UPS Minimum Wattage and V
olt-Amperes Rating:
500 W (833 VA) each
NOTE
The backup time and therefore battery size varies, depending on the
requirements of the site.
For more information on using a UPS device with the DVN 5000, refer to the
DVN 5000 Series Software Installation and Configuration
Manual.

Non Standard Connectors Rating
The rating of non standard connectors (alarm relays outputs and switched digital
inputs) is maximum 0.5 A at 12 VDC/24 VAC for all DVN 5000 Desktop Series
models.
Mounting
The DVN 5000 Desktop Series servers are designed for desktop use.
Do not place the DVN 5000 Desktop in a location where the unit’s
vents will be obstructed, as this may cause the unit to overheat.
Lithium Battery Replacement
The life expectancy of the lithium clock battery is 10 years and should not be
replaced under normal operating conditions. However, if you need to replace the
battery, do the following:
NOTE
Shut off power to the DVN and unplug the power cord prior to starting this
procedure.
1. Remove the top panel of the DVN.
2. If necessary, remove other components that are obstructing access to the
lithium battery (e.g. sound cards or
video cards).
NOTE
If the video cards have dip switches that are addressed for specific
cameras, they will need to be re-installed into exactly the same slots.
3. Remove the old battery.
4. Dispose of the old battery according to lo
cal requirements.
5. Insert the new battery.
The lithium battery is polarized. Ensure the side marked ‘+’ faces
out or towards you.
WA RNI NG
Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced.
Replace only with same type and rating.

6. Replace the components you have removed and the top DVN panel. The
DVN can now be switched back on.
PCB Card Replacement
When replacing a PCB card, dispose of the old card according to local requirements.
Servicing and Repair
Except for the battery, there are no user serviceable parts inside the unit. Refer to
your dealer for any service needs.
Warranty Information
Each DVN 5000 Desktop has a warranty sticker affixed to the outside of the unit
listing the DVN model, manufacturing date code, country where the unit was
assembled, and a warning statement. This sticker must be affixed to the unit and
intact to receive warranty service on a defective DVN unit at a Johnson Controls
authorized repair facility.
Important: Removing or tearing the sticker voids the unit’s warranty. Also, do not
attempt to open the DVN unit during the unit’s warranty period, as this will break
the warranty sticker’s seal and void the unit’s warranty.

NOTE
The Network Port (RJ45) is for use with a Local Area Network (LAN)
and/or Wide Area Network (WAN). The port is not to be connected to a
telecommunications/telephone network.
(DVN 5008 Model Only) If you wish to loop camera video images to a
monitor, remove and discard the plastic caps on the Loop Output BNC
connectors, if present, before attempting to connect the video cable to
the unit. Also, to avoid receiving a poor video signal (or no signal at
all), do not connect a camera video input cable to the unit’s Loop
Output connector. Camera video input cables must be connected to
the unit’s Camera Input BNC connectors.
To avoid degrading the video signal, do not add external End of Line
(EOL) termination devices to any camera input or loop output wiring.
The DVN 5000 already comes equipped with internal EOL termination
functionality.

Microphone Wiring
Each audio input connector on the DVN 5000 is set up as a stereo audio input jack
for a standard 3.5 mm TRS-type (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) connector.
The Tip of the plug is the Left Input for the audio channel.
The Ring of the plug is the Right Input for the audio stereo channel.
The Sleeve (or Barrel) is ground.
TIP
