Life is an action movie.
Scratch the surface of Los An-
geles, and you’ll ² nd a city that’s a
world away from the tourist clichés
of the stars on the Walk of Fame,
the Hollywood sign and Mann’s
Chinese Theatre.
Los Angeles is a city of gangs,
strip joints, bars and mean streets.
In the undergrowth of the urban
jungle, it’s all about the survival of
the ² ttest. Find yourself down a
back street late at night and you’d
better be able to handle yourself.
The glamour of Beverley Hills
seems light years away, not just
a few blocks.
Los Angeles is a city of asphalt,
criss-crossed by enormous
14-lane freeways. In rush hour
of course, it’s best to avoid them,
and instead give your BMW
K 1200 R free rein on the
legendary “PCH” (Paci² c Coast
Highway). And Los Angeles is a
city with attitude. People here
are used to fronting up and
showing what they’re made of.
But if you’re on the world’s most
powerful production naked bike,
that shouldn’t be a problem.

A 4-cylinder
The BMW Motorrad in-line
4-cylinder engine is the reason
why the BMW K 1200 R is the
most powerful series production
naked bike around. It delivers
superlative performance, its low
centre of gravity contributing to
the bike’s outstanding handling.
With this engine, the K 1200 R
is the ultimate BMW Motorrad
muscle bike.
A 163-bhp catapult.
Optimized airflow in the intake
and exhaust ports and a straight
manifold help the BMW K 1200 R
to push back the boundaries
of motorcycle performance. Its
163 brake horsepower (120 kW)
catapult it from 0 to 100 km/h in
just 2.9 seconds, while an enor-
mous 130 Nm of torque ensures
an instant response whenever
you need it.
Lateral thinking that
gives you the edge.
The BMW K 1200 R’s engine
is laterally mounted. Angling the
cylinder bank forward by
55 degrees and using dry sump
lubrication allows the centre of
grav ity to be lowered significantly,
making the bike easier to handle.
The narrowness of the water-
cooled engine makes the bike
more ergonomic, allowing the
rider to lean harder into corners,
while its clever layout helps
to reduce the size and weight of
the engine and do away with
unnecessary cables and hoses.
Toys for the big boys.
Close gear ratios and a precise
shifting mechanism are essen-
tial on any performance bike.
That’s why the BMW K 1200 R
comes with an advanced 6-speed
manual transmission that allows
riders to convert the power of the
4-cylinder engine into jaw-
dropping acceleration. Shifting
gears is a breeze, gearbox re-
sponse immediate and precise.
The whole drive train has been
designed with one thing in
mind: ultimate performance.
Performance-enhancing
technology.
The cylinder heads on the new
BMW K 1200 R are derived
directly from those used in
Formula One cars. The engine’s
16 valves are operated by rocker
arms, minimising friction and
increasing durability at engine
speeds of up to 11,000 rpm.
The low weight of the moving
parts and the rigidity of the valve
train reduce the stresses on indi-
vidual components, resulting in
smooth torque delivery and the
legend ary reliability you expect
from BMW Motorrad.

Show your true feelings
for the road.
The suspension of the BMW
K 1200 R sets new standards.
Combining sportsbike handling,
responsiveness, practicality, and
safety, it takes riding pleasure to
the next level.
Perfect in any situation.
The BMW Motorrad Duolever.
The BMW K 1200 R is equipped
with the patented BMW
Motorrad Duolever front wheel
suspension system. This innova-
tive technology manages to
accommodate apparently contra-
dictory demands: the smooth
high-speed cruising of a long
wheelbase, and agile cornering
performance. Its double trailing
arm construction separates sus-
pension and wheel control func-
tions, improving ride comfort,
increasing the torsional
rigidity of the fork, and significantly
reducing brake dive. The steering
head angle of 61 degrees gives
the motorcycle excellent manoeuv-
rability.
The BMW Motorrad Duolever
delivers precise steering, involving
feedback,and extremely stable
braking. The Duolever is mounted
low on the frame. This results in a
lower centre of gravity and better
balance, while also making space
for a larger airbox, and as such
plays a part in the K 1200 R’s
outstanding performance.
The sensitive side of the
world’s most powerful
production naked bike.
The BMW Motorrad Paralever.
With its Paralever rear wheel
control system, BMW Motorrad
has developed the perfect com-
plement to the Duolever. The
Paralever system combines the
functions of power transmis-
sion and suspension, negating
the effect of drive shaft vibrations.
The positioning of the Paralever
strut over the shaft drive ensures
good ground clearance, while the
progressive inverse kinematics
deliver outstanding suspension
response. The low weight of
the Paralever reduces the
unsprung mass, and its small
size has enabled the designers
to give the bike a slender profile.
In perfect harmony.
The Duolever and Paralever work
together to deliver exceptional
active safety, class-leading ride
comfort and outstanding handling.
16-17
The sophisticated geometry improves
damping and reduces brake dive. The
separation of damping and suspension
functions markedly improves handling.
K1200R_206_GBE.indd 17 05.09.2006 12:54:12 Uhr
The BMW Motorrad Duolever is a
revolution in motorcycle design.
It delivers agile handling, precise
steering feedback and a high level
of stability under braking.
The BMW Motorrad shaft drive is
incorporated into the swinging arm.
This low-maintenance solution is
extremely durable, while delivering
consistently excellent performance.
The laterally mounted engine,
with its cylinder bank angled
forward by 55 degrees and dry
sump lubrication, provides an
extremely low centre of gravity.
The BMW Motorrad Paralever
combines the functions of rear wheel
suspension and power transmission.
For better ground clearance, the Para-
lever torque reactor strut is positioned
over the swinging arm (not shown).

King of the road.
Electronic Suspension
Adjustment (ESA).*
Up until now, different surfaces,
varying loads and individual riding
styles all made manual suspen-
sion adjustment a tricky business.
Achieving optimum balance in the
preloading of springs and sus-
pension requires a great deal of
experience and judgment. The
BMW K 1200 R does away with
manual suspension tuning, thanks
to the innovative Electronic
Suspension Adjustment (ESA)
system.* The settings selected
are displayed on the large Info
Flatscreen.
Load settings.
When stationary and with the
engine running, the rider can
adjust suspension preload to the
current level of load (rider only,
rider with luggage or rider with
passenger and luggage) at the
touch of a button.
Riding style settings.
ESA makes it possible for riders
to adjust the suspension while
on the move, to suit their own
personal riding style and road
conditions. At the touch of a but-
ton, riders are able to choose
between three settings (Normal,
Comfort and Sport) for front and
rear suspension. The damper
settings – rebound at the front,
rebound and compression at
the rear – are then adjusted
automatically.
Perfect road holding,
all the time.
With its easy operation and opti-
mised suspension set-up, ESA
makes a significant contribution
to rider safety and comfort. It is
exclusive to BMW Motorrad.
The calm before the storm.
Behind the windshield.
Sleek and compact, the BMW
K 1200 R’s windshield offers
riders excellent protection from
wind and weather. The optional
sports windshield offers even
higher levels of protection
(see picture, left). Developed
in a wind tunnel, its shape is
designed to direct the airflow
around the rider, making for a
relaxed riding experience even at
high speeds. Windshields and
fork and radiator covers were all
tested in a wind tunnel to ensure
optimum airflow to the radiator.

K1200R_206_DIN.indd 21 12.09.2006 15:27:25 Uhr
The design of the BMW K 1200 R
takes into account the fact that
motorcycle riders come in all
shapes and sizes. That’s why
there are two choices of seat
height – the standard 820-mm
version or a 790-mm low version.
Every rider knows that the wider
the seat, especially towards the
front, the harder it is – whatever
the seat height – to reach the
ground with your feet. That’s why
the seat has been optimised in
terms of step length: markedly
slimmer towards the front, giving
more freedom of movement for
sports-style riding, while broad at
the rear, for more comfort. Its
slimline construction, coupled
with handlebars pushed forward
to achieve a steering head angle
of 61 degrees, make for a com-
manding riding position.
The BMW K 1200 R is designed
to suit larger and smaller riders
alike. The ergonomic triangle
formed by the footrest, seat and
handlebar ensures a relaxed riding
experience, even in a sports
riding position. And the slim lines
of the BMW K 1200 R also allow
for an especially narrow knee
posture, improving rider control
and contact with the bike.
Are you sitting comfortably?
Weight and counterweight.
Ultimate stopping power.
The BMW Motorrad braking
system has been specially adapt-
ed for the BMW K 1200 R to
meet the demands of sports
riding. Its low weight, long life
and outstanding braking per-
formance really set it apart.
To ensure that the stopping pow-
er of the BMW K 1200 R is
applied to maximum effect, the
motorcycle can be fitted with the
partially integral version of the
new BMW Motorrad Integral
ABS system. The system, which
increases overall weight by just
2.2 kilograms, optimises the
distribution of braking force
between front and rear wheels
when the handlebar lever is pulled.
The foot brake, on the other hand,
acts only on the rear-wheel. The
system prevents rearwheel lift,
enssuring both wheels stay on the
road at all times. Other benefits
include the high degree of preci-
sion with which riders can control
braking, and the system’s ability
to adjust the distribution of brak-
ing force according to the load
being carried. No more mainten-
ance is required than on motor-
cycles without ABS.
The stainless steel brake hoses
not only ensure the biting point
of the brakes remains constant,
they also look great.
Powerful forces.
The BMW Motorrad Para-
lever, with its overhead torque
reactor strut, uses a lightweight
sports design. The lower un-
sprung mass results in lower
weight, making the rear-wheel
suspension particularly responsive.
The lightweight BMW Motorrad
shaft drive delivers sportsbike
response and performance. It is
extremely durable and easy to
maintain.
