The installation time is approx. 3.5 hours but this may vary depending on the condition of the

1. Important information for the installation of the Sound Module system3
Only for use in the BMW dealer organisation.
The Sound Module system may only be installed by a specialist workshop that has the required
special tools and manuals (servicing, repair, diagnostics, etc.).
This high quality audio system is to be fitted exclusively in conjunction with original BMW
car radios.
The customer information is to be given to the customer.
If it is connected to other makes, BMW AG cannot accept any guarantee for the sound module
system.
The Sound Module system is only suitable for installation in cars
without SA676
BMW Hi-fi
system..
Ensure that the cables/lines are not kinked or damaged as you install them in the car.
Additional cables/lines that you install must be secured with cable ties.
Item numbers refer only to the overview drawings and to the texts next to the appropriate figure.
Electrical knowledge is required.
Use the radio/amplifier adapter cable
C
in cars with an on-board monitor radio with a
production date after 9/01 (New Generation radio connection plug).
During installation, proceed in the same way as when installing the radio/amplifier adapter
cable

The top section on the left and right of the rear speaker mounting box is not supplied in
the retrofit kit and must be ordered separately to match the vehicle equipment (interior
equipment) using the electronic arts catalogue (EPC) (a new part is required).

4. To install the amplifier and additional wiring harness
(for cars with a battery in the boot)

Push the hexagonal screw M8x20 (8) into the top
amplifier holder (6) from underneath.
Place the top amplifier holder (6) with the inserted
hexagonal screw M8x20 (8) on to the amplifier (1)
and secure it with four fillister head screws 3.5x9.5
(2).
Watch the position of the opening (40) for the
adapter cable connection plug.

Affix the damping strip (10) on to the top amplifier
holder (6) and the amplifier (1) as shown in the
figure.

The figure shows the driver’s footwell with a
view through the opening in the left
oddments box next to the steering column.
Fit the pipe clip (7) to the cross strut (40) on the
instrument panel holder.
Cut out the insulation mat (41) above the securing
screw (42) for the control module box and unscrew
the securing screw (42).
If the Telestart receiver for a retrofit auxiliary
heating system is fitted in this position it must
be removed.

Screw the bottom amplifier holder (5) into the hole
(41) provided using the existing securing screw
(40) for the control module box.
Do not tighten the securing screw (40) yet
since otherwise it will be difficult to slide in
the amplifier.

Connect the black 17-pin radio connection plug

Connect the black 17-pin socket casing (41) on
the adapter cable

to the radio.
Then lay the adapter cable

with the black 25-pin
connection plug (42), as shown in the figure, above
the steering column to the installation site of the
amplifier and secure it with cable ties.

Connect the adapter cable

to the amplifier (1).
Attach the 25-pin connection plug (40) on the
adapter cable
A
to the plug strip (41) and press it
in the direction indicated by the arrow with a large
flat screwdriver (42) until it audibly engages in the
amplifier casing.

Carefully slide the connected, assembled amplifier
(1) behind the cross strut (40) and above the
bottom amplifier holder (5).
As you slide in the amplifier, ensure that you
do not jam or damage any of the cables. The
sequence of the following installation work
must be followed to the letter.
Place a hexagonal screw M8x20 (8) into the pipe
clip (7) and screw on a hexagonal nut with collar
M8 (9).
Do not tighten the nut yet.

Secure the bottom amplifier holder (5) to the
amplifier (1) with the two fillister head self-tapping
screws 3.5 x 9.5 (2).
Secure the adapter cable A along the main wiring
harness (40) with cable ties (18).
Align the amplifier (1) and ensure that you do not
jam or damage any of the cables. Then tighten the
securing screw (41) for the control module box and
the hexagonal nut with collar M8 (9).
If the car has an auxiliary heating system,
now reinstall the Telestart receiver you
removed earlier.

The figure shows the engine compartment on
the right near the control module box.
Secure the adapter for the earth connection (3) to
the earth post (40) near the brake booster using
the existing hexagonal nut M8.

Lay the earth cable (40), brown cable, with the 6
mm cable eyelet and the power cable (41), red
cable on the adapter cable A through the opening
(42) into the control module box in the engine
compartment on the left.
0
Carefully cut open the rubber grommet (40) in the
front a little.Carefully push the earth cable (41),
brown cable with 6 mm cable eyelet, through the
opening you have made in the rubber grommet
(40).Then secure the 6 mm cable eyelet (42) to the
adapter for the earth connection (3) using the
hexagonal nut M6 (4).
Seal the rubber grommet (40) around the
opening you cut using sealing compound.

Carefully cut open the rubber grommet (40) in the
front a little.Carefully push the power cable (41),
red cable, through the opening you have made in
the rubber grommet (40) and then push it through
the rubber grommet (42).
Seal the rubber grommet (40) around the
opening you cut using sealing compound.

Lay the power cable (40), red cable, under the
cable guide (41) from the left to the right side of the
car.Then on the right-hand side of the car push it
through the rubber grommet (42) to the installation
site of the battery.
0
Lay the power cable (40), red cable, to the
connection site of the supply cable with fuse B and
cut off the excess length.
Crimp the blade terminal contact (11) on to cut off
power cable (40) and connect it to the supply
cable with fuse B.Secure the cable eyelet, 8 mm in
diameter (41) on the supply cable with fuse B to
the positive pole on the battery.The secure the
supply cable with fuse B and the power cable (40)
with cable ties (18).

Connect the black 17-pin radio connection plug

adapter cable A.

Secure the bottom amplifier holder (5) to the
amplifier (1) with the two fillister head self-tapping
screws 3.5 x 9.5 (2).
Secure the adapter cable A along the main wiring
harness (40) with cable ties (18).
Align the amplifier (1) and ensure that you do not

securing screw (41) for the control module box and
the hexagonal nut with collar M8 (9).
If the car has an auxiliary heating system,

front a little.Carefully push the earth cable (41),
brown cable with 6 mm cable eyelet, through the
opening you have made in the rubber grommet
(40).Then secure the 6 mm cable eyelet (42) to the
adapter for the earth connection (3) using the
hexagonal nut M6 (4).
Seal the rubber grommet (40) around the
opening you cut using sealing compound.

Lay the power cable (40), red cable on the adapter
cable near the left door sill along the standard
wiring harness under the reinforcement for the rear
seat bench into the boot and secure it with cable
ties.Then lay it along the closing panel to the
installation site of the battery (41) and secure it
with textile adhesive tape (42).

The figure shows the boot at the rear right.
Lay the power cable (40), red cable, to the
connection site of the supply cable with fuse B and
cut off the excess length.
Crimp the blade terminal contact (11) on to cut off
power cable (40) and connect it to the supply
cable with fuse B.Secure the cable eyelet, 8 mm in
diameter (41) on the supply cable with fuse B to
the positive pole on the battery.The secure the
supply cable with fuse B and the power cable (41)
with cable ties (18).

Affix the template (26) to the airbag mounting plate
(40) and drill four holes with diameters of 2.5 mm
(41).

Affix the template (27) to the airbag mounting plate
(40) and drill two holes with diameters of 2.5 mm
(41).

Place the top amplifier holder (6) on the amplifier
(1) and secure it with the two fillister head self-
tapping screws 3.5 x 9.5 (2).
Watch the position of the opening (40) for the
adapter cable connection plug.

Secure the amplifier (1) with the top amplifier
holder (6) to the airbag mounting plate (40) with
two fillister head self-tapping screws 3.5 x 9.5 (2).

Mark the holes (41) on the top amplifier holder (6)
from the other side of the airbag mounting plate
(40).

Unscrew the amplifier and unscrew the top
amplifier holder.
Drill the marked holes (40) on the top amplifier
holder (6) with a diameter of 2.5 mm.

Place the top amplifier holder (6) on the amplifier
(1) and secure it with the two fillister head self-
tapping screws 3.5 x 9.5 (2).
Watch the position of the opening (40) for the
adapter cable connection plug.

Secure the amplifier (1) with the top amplifier
holder (6) to the airbag mounting plate (40) with six
fillister head self-tapping screws 3.5 x 9.5 (2).

Cut open the rubber grommet (40) for the airbag
mounting plate.
Push the black 25-pin connection plug on the
radio/amplifier adapter cable A through it.

Connect the radio/amplifier adapter cable A to the
amplifier (1).

adapter cable A to the plug strip (41) and press it
in the direction indicated by the arrow with a large

Install the airbag mounting plate and amplifier (40)
and lay the radio/amplifier adapter cable A along
the main wiring harness to the on-board monitor
radio.

Lay the earth cable (40) and the radio/amplifier
adapter cable along the main wiring harness and
secure them with cable ties (18).
MacPherson strut tower on the left below the
rear seat backrest lock.

Secure the earth cable (40) on the radio/amplifier
adapter wiring harness A to the earth post
X13016.

Connect the black 17-pin radio connection plug
X18126 to the black 17-pin plug casing (40) on
adapter cable A.
You may have to reconnect the CD changer
connection cable to the black 17-pin socket
casing (41) on the adapter cable A.
Connect the black 17-pin socket casing (41) on
the adapter cable A to the radio.

Lay the 1-pin cable on the radio/amplifier adapter
wiring harness A along the main wiring harness on
the left-hand side.

Lay the 1-pin red cable on the radio/amplifier
adapter wiring harness A, through the opening (40)
into the control module box in the engine
compartment on the left-hand side.

Engine compartment at the front left.
Carefully cut open the rubber grommet (40) in the
front.
Lay the 1-pin red cable on the radio/amplifier
adapter wiring harness A, through the opening you
have made in the rubber grommet (40) and then
push it through the rubber grommet (41).
Seal the rubber grommet (40) around the
opening you cut using sealing compound.

Lay the 1-pin red cable on the radio/amplifier
adapter wiring harness A, under the cable guide
(40) from the left to the right-hand side of the car.
Then on the right-hand side of the car push it
through the rubber grommet (41) to the installation
site of the battery.

6. To install the amplifier and additional wiring harness
(for cars with a battery in the engine compartment) with an on-board monitor radio

Cut the 1-pin red cable on the radio/amplifier
adapter wiring harness A, to the appropriate
length, crimp on a blade terminal contact and
insert it into the fuse holder (40).
Secure the cable eyelet (41) on the supply cable
with the fuse B to the positive pole (42).
