Thermo Scientic Shandon Formal-Fixx Ready-to-Use 10% Neutral
Buffered Formalin and Thermo Scientic Shandon Formal-Fixx
Concentrate Phosphate-Free
Instructions for Use
For in vitro diagnostic use.
For xation of pathology specimens.
Thermo Scientic Shandon Formal-Fixx Ready-to-Use and Thermo Scientic Shandon Formal-Fixx Concentrate
are neutral buffered formalins designed for use with light and electron microscopy. The
phosphate-free buffering system in both prevents the formation of free formic acid, and its associate artifact,
formalin pigment.
The osmolarity of these xatives allows them to be used not only for light microscopy, but for electron microscopic
studies as well. This eliminates the need to presort specimens for EM.
Formal-Fixx Ready-to-Use is a 10% neutral buffered formalin that is premixed and ready to use from the
container. Formal-Fixx Concentrate is easily diluted to become a 10% neutral buffered formalin.
Instructions for Use
1. Formal-Fixx Ready-to-Use is to be used full strength.
2. Formal-Fixx Concentrate needs to be diluted. Mix 1 part of the concentrate with 4 parts distilled or deionized
water. A one liter bottle of concentrate will make 5 liters of 10% neutral buffered formalin.
3. Use as a routine histologic xative. For optimum results, the minimum tissue/xative ratio should range from
1:15 to 1:20, and specimens should be placed into xative immediately following removal from the patient for
a period of time that will ensure adequate xation.
4. Specimens may be stored in these solutions; they will not cause excessive shrinkage or hardening.
Storage
Store at room temperature. Do not store with hydrochloric acid. Keep containers tightly closed when not in use.
