Digital Message Repeater – with Record/Playback facility
The IMP401 can record a single message of up to 1 minute duration.
Recordings can be made on site and playback mode is selected by contacts wired to the input
connector. See fig 3 for connection details.
As shown above in fig 1 the unit has a bank of eight DIL switches.
They are shown in the default positions as supplied from the factory (SW3, 6, and 7 set to ON).
These switches enable various functions as follows:
Switch PCB Ident Option
1. REC DIS When switched ON recordings cannot be made, even when a microphone is
plugged into the unit.
Can be used to prevent accidental deletion of the recorded message
2. PA When ON the audio output signal is routed to the main output of the mixer or
amplifier in which the unit is installed.
If this switch is ON switch 3 MUST be OFF
3. MS When ON* the audio output signal is routed via the master gain and tone
controls of the mixer or amplifier in which the unit is installed.
If this switch is ON switch 2 MUST be OFF
4. CHIME When ON a chime or tone will precede the message, provided a suitable
module is fitted.
5. REST When ON the restoration output from the mixer or amplifier in which the unit
is installed will be activated during message playback.
6. PH POWER When switched ON* phantom power is provided on pin 2 of the jack socket.
7. PH POWER When switched ON* phantom power is provided on pin 3 of the jack socket.
8. BAL I/P When switched ON the audio input should be a balanced signal.
* Default settings as supplied from the factory.

Instructions for Recording a Message
1. To make a recording plug in the microphone and press and hold the front panel “Record
button (the LED will turn red to show that that recording is in progress).
2. Speak clearly into the microphone at a distance of approximately 15 cm.
Please note that if a chime module is fitted the user should leave a three second pause at the
start of the message to avoid talking over the chime.
3. At the end of the message release the button (the LED will go out).
4. To prevent accidental erasure of the message it is recommended that the microphone be
removed from the socket after the recording has been made.
If extra protection for the recorded message is required then SW1 may be set to ON. This
prevents recordings even when a microphone is plugged in (see fig 1).
Instructions for Replaying the Recorded Message
The drawings below illustrate how to connect the normally open contacts to play the message either
once or continually.
While the message is playing the LED will turn green.
The volume control should be set as required.
The knob and shaft may be removed after setting up to prevent further changes.
