thenetworkdescribedbythevaluecontainedintheEnterSubnetMaskfieldandmustnotconflictwithanyotherdeviceonthe
targetnetwork.

anyotherdeviceonthatnetworkwitharange
ofaddressesof192.168.1.1through192.168.1.254(with
192.168.1.255reservedforbroadcast).Anaddressoutsideofthatrangeisonadifferentnetworkwhichwouldneedto
beaccessedindirectlythrougharouter.Thatrouterwouldbethegatewaytothenetworkonwhichtheremotetarget
deviceresides.Inorderto
communicatewithit,itwouldmeansendingandreceivingviathegatewaydevice.Thisalso
requireseitherdefiningastaticroute(definedthroughtheNetwork>StaticRoutesmenu)viathatgatewayormaking
itthedefaultroutebysetting“UseRemoteGatewayasDefaultRoutetoYes

RecommendedSetting:Yournetworkadministratorshouldbeabletoprov ideanappropriatevalue.Theaddressmustbeone
withinthevalidrangeforthenetwork.

The“ARPCache”isatablewhichstoresmappingsbetweenDataLinkLayer(OSILayer2)addressesandNetworkLayer(OSI
Layer3)addresses.Thisimportantinformationshowswhatconnectionsareestablishedtotherouter.Whenyouclickon
theARPCachemenuitem,thefollowingdialogwindowwillappear.

SocketsareendpointstocommunicationovertheInternet.MuchlikePBXphonesystems,wheretheIPaddressisthe
phonenumberandtheportistheextension.Everypaired(connected)sock ethasasourceIP/portandadestinationIP/
port.

The“TCPOnly”tabledisplaysthesocketsthatareconnectionoriented(Alsoknownas“streamsockets”).
“ConnTrackisaconnectiontrackerthatdisplaysmorethoroughinformationaboutthecurrentsocketconnections.Con
nectiontrackingallowsthekerneltokeeptrackofalllogical
networkconnectionsorsessions,andtherebyrelateallofthe
packetswhichmaymakeupthatconnection.NATreliesonthisinformationtotranslateallrelatedpacketsinthesame
way,andIPTABLEScanusethisinformationtoactasastatefulfirewall.
