SAFETY ASPECTS
The control unit, the control panel and the fan unit use a
dangerously high voltage of 230V. The system should be
made dead before any electrical or maintenance work.
Electrical installations should only be carried
out by a suitably qualified electrician.
Before any maintenance work is carried out on the fan
unit, the safety switches for the fan and for the hatch
opening motors should be turned to position 0.
If the fan unit is installed in a place where it may cause
danger, access to the unit should be prevented.
The installer and the operator are jointly responsible for ensuring
that the installation complies with local rules and regulations.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW
SMOKE MASTER SMIA is an all-inclusive total solution for stairwell pres-
surisation and smoke exhaust. The system has been designed and the
components have been constructed to the pressurisation standard EN
12101-6, and the smoke extract fans conform to EN 12101-3. The system
has been tested by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, and it has
also been subjected to full-scale fire tests, performed in Myllypuro, Hel-
sinki, in a block of flats. SMIA has been designed for use in residential
buildings up to eight storeys high.
The SMIA fan unit is, due to its compact external dimensions, suitable
for use in new build as well as many refurbishment projects. For ease
of design, it is only available in one size with constant air volumes that
works for stairwells of many different heights.
An SMIA total solution comprises integrated smoke hatches, a fan unit,
a control panel, and a control unit. The apartment air release path solu-
tions with the necessary spindle motors, smoke detectors and control
units are supplied by our partners.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS
STAIRWELL SMOKE DETECTORS
The smoke detectors (FDRC-1-SMIA) allow direct connection to the SMIA
system. There should be stairwell smoke detectors ceiling mounted at
each landing. The detectors should be connected in series, with the last
one connected to a terminator (see wiring diagrams).
The smoke detectors are optical and rated at 24V.
When a smoke detector detects smoke, the red LED on the detector is
lit, and an alarm indication is provided to the control unit.
The alarm remains active until reset at the control unit.
RELAY UNIT FOR SMOKE DETECTORS
The stairwell smoke detectors should be wired to the relay unit incorpo-
rated into the SMIA control unit. The relay unit monitors the operation of
the smoke detectors.
Normal operation: Green LED “Operation” steadily on.
Service alarm: Yellow LED “Service” steadily on.
Clean the smoke detector: the yellow LED will start flashing slowly.
Reset the alarm using the Reset button: the yellow LED will go off.
Error: Yellow LED “Short circuit” steadily due to a short-circuited detec-
tor cable.
Fix the problem: the yellow LED will start flashing slowly.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS
PRESSURE TRANSMITTER
The pressure transmitter should be installed in a sheltered place.
The silicone hoses should not exceed 10m in length and should be
shielded or otherwise replaced with pipes.
Take the + hose to the stairwell and the – hose outdoors.
The outdoor hose can be taken through a wall using a wall sleeve
designed for overpressure meters (YM-1 + capped pipe + bend),
available as an accessory.
The factory setting for the pressure range is 100 Pa. Make sure the
dip switch settings are as shown in the picture.
The display of the pressure transmitter must be accessible to those
conducting annual inspections.
The display should be reset once a year. Disconnect the hoses and
open the cover. Press and hold the “Zero” button for five seconds.
The factory setting for the response time is 2s to ease off pressure
control. The setting can be checked by placing dip switch PJ3 to the
F position

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS
CONTROL UNIT
The control unit should be placed in a sheltered place (e.g. a mechanical
room). It should be easily accessible, as it is where, for example, smoke
detectors are reset.
CONTROL PANEL
The control panel should be placed in the stairwell near the entrance
door where the rescue authorities can easily find it.
For testing, the cover must be opened to gain access to the switch-
es. In the event of a fire, fire fighters break the glass and select either
pressurisation or smoke exhaust. The latter is an overriding function:
when the SMOKE EXHAUST switch is turned to position 1, pressurisa-
tion stops, and smoke exhaust starts.
Normally, the PRESSURISATION switch is in position AUT, the SMOKE
EXHAUST switch is in position 0, and the green STANDBY light is on.

SYSTEM OPERATION
The components for controlling SMIA include:
fuses and switches in the power supply cable for the control unit
fuses, frequency converter, relay unit and hatch opening switch in-
side the control unit
control panel
pressure transmitter
smoke detectors
safety switches for the fan unit
external systems, if any.
PRESSURISATION
Pressurisation starts
when an SMIA smoke detector activates, provided that the pressur-
isation switch on the control panel is in position AUT.
when an external system sends the SMIA control unit a signal to
start pressurisation, provided that the pressurisation switch on the
control panel is in position AUT.
when the pressurisation on the control panel is turned to position
MAN.
First, the hatches above the fan open. In approximately 20 seconds, the
fan starts running and blowing air into the building. The frequency con-
verter works, based on the pressure difference measured by the pres-
sure transmitter, to maintain the pressure within the stairwell higher, by
50 Pa, than the pressure of the air outside.
Stopping
When activated by an SMIA smoke detector, pressurisation can be
stopped by resetting the ABAV relay unit incorporated into the con-
trol unit. There must be no smoke left near the smoke detector.
When activated by an external system, pressurisation can be
stopped from this external system.
When activated from the control panel, pressurisation can be
stopped by turning the pressurisation switch to position AUT or 0.
SMOKE EXHAUST
Starting
Smoke exhaust can only be started using the smoke exhaust switch on
the control panel. Smoke exhaust is an overriding function: if it is activat-
ed while pressurisation is in progress, the fan stops and switches to the
smoke exhaust mode.
First, the hatches above the fan open. In approximately 20 seconds, the
fan starts running, at full speed, and extracting air from the building.
Stopping
Smoke exhaust can only be stopped using the smoke exhaust switch on
the control panel.
FREQUENCY CONVERTER
The frequency converter controls the pressure during pressurisation. For
smoke exhaust, it makes the fan run in the reverse direction and at full
speed.
The parameters of the frequency converter are factory set. Attached to
this document is a list of the parameters.
CONTROL PANEL
The frequency converter should always be in the Auto/On mode!
TUNING THE PRESSURE CONTROLLER
The pressure (PI) controller is pre-tuned to respond fast but without
causing vibration. In cases where vibrations occur in a building with low
leakage currents, the pressure controller can be made less responsive
by decreasing the gain (7-33) and extending the integral time (7-34).
7-33 Process PI Proportional Gain
0.00 - 10.00 * 0.01
7-34 Process PI Integral Time
0.10 - 9999 s * 9999 s
ERROR CODES
Read the displayed code and address the cause of the problem.
RESETTING AFTER AN ERROR
In the case of an error that has caused the fan to stop, the frequency
converter must be reset by first making it dead, using the back-up fuse,
so that the display goes blank. After making the frequency converter
live again, it should be reset by pressing the Off/Reset key and then the
Auto/On key.

TESTING AND INSPECTIONS
INITIAL INSPECTION
1. First measures
Turn the control unit fuses to position 1.
Turn the safety switches to position 1.
Turn the control panel switches to position 0.
Make the control unit live.
Reset the pressure transmitter to read 0 Pa.
Check that only the green “Operation” LED on the relay unit is on.
Check that the frequency converter is in the Auto/On mode and does
not display any error messages.
The yellow “Service” LED on the control panel should now be on.
Turn the PRESSURISATION switch on the control panel to position
AUT. The green STANDBY light should come on.
2. Checking the operation of the hatches
Open the hatches by turning switch S3, inside the control unit, to po-
sition 1. If the hatches will not open, check if the safety switch is in
position 0 or if the cable to the linear motors is connected incorrectly.
Return the switch to position 0: the hatches should close.
3. Checking the operation of smoke exhaust
Open a compensation air hatch or the entrance door e.g. to prevent
windows from being damaged.
Turn the SMOKE EXHAUST switch to position 1.
The red SMOKE EXHAUST light on the control panel should come on.
The hatches of the fan unit open.
In approximately 20 seconds, the fan will start running at full speed.
Check that air starts flowing out of the stairwell. If the air flows in the
wrong direction, the two phase conductors of the fan motor cable
should change places.
Turn the SMOKE EXHAUST switch to position 0. Only the STANDBY
light should come on.
4. Checking the operation of pressurisation
Close all doors to the stairwell.
Start pressurisation by turning the PRESSURISATION switch on the
control panel to position MAN. Alternatively, with the PRESSURISA-
TION switch in position AUT, pressurisation can be activated from an
external system or by triggering a smoke detector using test gas.
The red PRESSURISATION light on the control panel should come on.
The hatches of the fan unit open.
In approximately 20 seconds, the fan will start running and air will
start flowing into the stairwell. If the flow of air is in the wrong direc-
tion, the two phase conductors of the fan motor cable should change
places.
The frequency converter works, based on the pressure difference
measured by the pressure transmitter, to maintain the pressure with-
in the stairwell higher, by 50 (± 5) Pa, than the pressure of the air
outside.
If the pressure will not rise, check the transmitter hoses and make
sure all doors are properly closed.
If there are significant fluctuations in pressure, see the instructions
for tuning the pressure controller.
The intended air release path has to be kept open during testing to
reduce vibrating.
With the PRESSURISATION switch in position AUT, reset the relay
unit, in the control unit, using the RESET button. The fan will stop, and
the hatches will close.
HALF-YEARLY INSPECTIONS
Check the operation of smoke exhaust and pressurisation using the
control panel switches (see Initial inspection).
ANNUAL INSPECTIONS
Carry out the measures described under Initial inspection.
Check that the hatches of the fan unit open without trouble. Re-
move any obstructions. On the hatch opening motors, the following
should be checked:
1. Security of motor mountings
2. Protection against moisture
3. Operation (testing) and electrical connections of the motors
Also check that the hinges of the hatches are properly secured,
that the water drain is clean, and that the seals are tight. Replace
seals as necessary.
Check the condition of the transmitter hoses. Replace hoses as
necessary.
For resetting the pressure transmitter the hoses need to be de-
tached from the transmitter. See installation of pressure transmit-
ter.

MAINTENANCE AND CONNECTIONS TO EXTERNAL SYSTEMS
MAINTENANCE OF ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS
The maintenance of the automatic system involves:
Resetting the pressure transmitter once a year
Cleaning the smoke detector after every error message
Servicing the control unit fuses as necessary
Inspecting the fan of the frequency converter once a year and re-
placing it when necessary
Inspecting the glass cover of the control panel once a year
Servicing the LEDs on the control panel as necessary
MAINTENANCE OF THE FAN
The hatches of the fan unit can be opened for fan maintenance using
switch S3, located inside the control unit. Before any maintenance work
is carried out, the fan and the linear motors should be made dead by
turning the safety switches on the fan unit to position 0.
After maintenance, return the safety switches to position 1, and close
the hatches using switch S3. The green light on the control panel should
come on.
To gain access to the axial fan, remove the cross member from the fan
unit and detach the motor spindles from the hatches. To remove the
cross member:
1. Remove the four fixing screws (2) of the cross member.
2. Remove the fixing screws (3) of the motor spindle from the hatch.
3. Take out the cross member (1) together with the motor, and place
the assembly where the motor cables are not exposed to pulling.
Reassemble in reverse order.
Fan maintenance is detailed in the instructions for HT series Aerofoil
fans.
CONNECTIONS TO EXTERNAL SYSTEMS (E.G. APARTMENT AIR
RELEASE PATHS OR SMOKE DETECTOR SYSTEM)
Pressurisation can be activated from an external system via a volt-free
normally open contact. The contact must remain closed for the entire
duration of pressurisation. The voltage rating for the circuit is 24VAC.
The control unit gives volt-free Run and Alarm signals. A Run signal is
given on activation of pressurisation or smoke exhaust. This signal can
be used, for example, to activate the emergency stop operation of the
ventilation system.
An Alarm signal is given in the event of a fault that prevents the system
from working.
