Docking Station 2
Overview
The Docking Station (Figure 2.2) connects the COBAS
®
AmpliPrep
Instrument to the COBAS
®
TaqMan
®
Analyzer and fully automates sample
preparation, amplification, and detection.
When the Docking Station is installed, prepared K-tubes are automatically
transferred from the COBAS
®
AmpliPrep Instrument to the COBAS
®
TaqMan
®
Analyzer as shown in Figure 2.2.

Installation
Transportation and Storage Conditions
The Docking Station is transported in a palletized container.
The Docking Station weight, including accessories, pallet and packaging
materials, is approximately 35 kg (77 lb).
Docking Station Dimensions and Weight
Unpacking and Installation
The original shipping container must be transferred unopened to the
installation site. The Docking Station should be unpacked and installed by
trained Roche Service personnel. No attempt should be made by the user
to remove, set up, or operate the instrument without Roche Service
personnel being present.
The packing list that accompanies the Docking Station contains the
description, part number, and quantity of all component parts,
accessories, and consumables delivered with the instrument. This packing
list should be verified against the delivered items and retained for future
reference.
Electrical Power Requirements
The Docking Station is designed in accordance with EN/IEC 61010-1,
EN/IEC 61010-2-101, UL 61010A-1, and CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 1010.1.
Environmental Requirements
The Docking Station is designed for indoor use at an altitude below 2,000
meters (6,500 feet). Room temperature should be between 15° C to 32° C
(59° F to 89° F), and relative humidity should not exceed 80% at 32° C
(89°
F) without condensation. Atmospheric conditions should conform to
Pollution Degree 2 (according to EN/IEC 61010-1).
Width 35 cm (13.75 in)
Depth 43 cm (17 in)
Height 76.5 cm (30 in)

Methodology
The Docking Station links a COBAS
®
AmpliPrep Instrument to a COBAS
®
TaqMan
®
Analyzer (Figure 2.3) and fully automates sample handling
during sample preparation, amplification, and detection.
When preparation of each sample is completed, the K-tube containing the
prepared sample is automatically placed in a K-carrier. When sample
preparation of a batch is completed, the loaded K-carrier is then
automatically loaded onto the Docking Station multicarrier (
Figure 2.4)
by the COBAS
®
AmpliPrep Instrument.
The Docking Station then transports the multicarrier containing the
K-carrier from the COBAS
®
AmpliPrep Instrument to the COBAS
®
TaqMan
®
Analyzer (Figure 2.4).

The COBAS
®
TaqMan
®
Analyzer then transfers the K-carrier from the
multicarrier to a thermal cycler (
Figure 2.5) and performs amplification
and detection on the K-tube contents. After amplification and detection is
completed, empty K-carriers are returned to the COBAS
®
AmpliPrep
Instrument by the Docking Station.

Loading Empty K-carriers
When using the Docking Station, an empty K-carrier must be present in
each of the two K-carrier park positions of the COBAS
®
AmpliPrep
Instrument and in positions 9 to 12 of the Reload Area of the COBAS
®
TaqMan
®
Analyzer.
If empty K-carriers are not present in these positions, they must be loaded
into these positions before starting a run.
