Cisco Nexus Insights Installation and Setup

About Cisco Nexus Insights

Cisco Nexus Insights ( Cisco NI ) is a real-time monitoring and analytics application.

Cisco Nexus Insights Components

The Cisco Nexus Insights (Cisco NI) application monitors a data center network and pinpoints issues

that can be addressed to maintain availability and reduce surprise outages. Cisco NI’s

understanding of your network allows it to provide proactive advice with a focus on maintaining

availability and alerting customers about potential issues that can impact up-time.

The Cisco NI app provides log collection functionalities which are useful when working with Cisco

TAC. It provides a way for Cisco customers to collect tech support across multiple devices and

upload those tech supports to Cisco Intersight Cloud. Additionally, it enables capability for Cisco TAC

teams to collect technical support on demand for a particular device.

Cisco NI app consists of the following components:

•Data Management—Settings to configure flows and schedule jobs to collect software telemetry

and flow telemetry data.

◦Flow Configuration—Manage flow configuration rules on the site enabled on Cisco NI app.

◦Collection Status—Displays the node capabilities and collection status of the nodes for the

features that are supported and not supported.

◦Bug Scan—Provides access to configure, schedule, on-demand bug scan that runs for a

selected site. Bug Scan generates system anomalies and alerts that are critical for a

particular node on the site.

◦Third Party Integrations—Provides access to onboard a AppDynamics Controller on to the

Cisco NI app.

◦Export Data—Streams the data collected from Cisco NI app through a Kafka exporter to send

the summary of data in Cisco NI app email.

•Devices—Provides various ways of viewing the behavior of the nodes based on Resource

Utilization, Environmental, Statistics, End Point Analytics, and Flow Analytics.

•Analyze Alerts—Access to total advisories, notices, PSIRTs, hardware, software, and hardening

check advisories applicable to your network.

◦Advisories

▪Field Notices—Notices such as end-of-life notices for switch hardware and software.

▪PSIRTs—Product Security Incident Response Team notices that display three levels of

advisory severity for switch hardware and software in your network.

▪Firmware Upgrade Path and Upgrade Impact—To upgrade to a recommended software

version, Cisco NI app suggests an upgrade path and determines the potential impact of

the upgrade to the first-hop.

◦Anomalies

▪Bug Scan—Provides access to configure and schedule bug scan that runs for a selected

site.

◦Troubleshoot

▪Log Collection—Collect and upload the logs for devices in your network to Cisco

Intersight Cloud. Enables Cisco TAC to trigger on-demand collection of logs for user

devices on the site and pull the logs from Cisco Intersight Cloud.

•Data Collection—The streaming of telemetry data is done by the Operating Systems on the site

nodes. As each data source is different and the format in which data is streamed is different,

there are corresponding collectors running analytics that translate the telemetry events from

the nodes into data records to be stored in the data lake. The data stored in the data lake is a

format that the analytics pipeline can understand and work upon.

The following telemetry information collected from various nodes in the site to achieve the

goal:

◦Resources Analytics—This includes monitoring software and hardware resources of site

nodes on the Cisco APIC.

◦Environmental—This includes monitoring environmental statistics of hardware resources

such as fan, CPU, memory, and power of the site nodes.

◦Statistics Analytics—This includes monitoring of nodes, interfaces, and protocols on the

Cisco APIC and site nodes.

◦Flow Analytics—This includes monitoring of flows on the Cisco site nodes, detecting average

latency, packet drop indication, and flow move indication across the entire Cisco ACI.

◦Endpoint Analytics—This includes monitoring endpoints on the Cisco site nodes for rapid

endpoint moves and endpoints that do not get learnt back after a reboot across the entire

Cisco ACI.

◦Event Analytics—This includes monitoring of events, faults and configuration changes.

•Resource Utilization and Environmental Statistics—Resource analytics supports configuration,

operational, and hardware resources. Environmental covers CPU, memory, temperature, fan

utilization, power, and storage related to the leaf nodes, spine nodes, and Cisco APIC. System

analytics also covers anomalies, the trending information of each resource, and graphing of

parameters, which help network operators debug nodes over periods of time.

•Predictive Analytics and Correlation—The value-add of this platform is predicting failures in the

site and correlating internal site failures to the user-visible or interested failures.

•Anomaly Detection—Involves understanding the behavior of each component using different

machine learning algorithms and raising anomalies when the resource behavior deviates from

the expected pattern. Anomaly detector applications use different supervised and unsupervised

learning algorithms to detect the anomalies in the resources and they log the anomalies in an

anomaly database.

Downloading Cisco Nexus Insights Application

Use this procedure to download Cisco Nexus Insights application from the Cisco DC App Center.

Before you begin

You must have administrative credentials to download applications from Cisco DC App Center.

Procedure

1. Log in to the Cisco DC App Center with admin privileges.

2. Click the Download Applications icon on the far-right side of the work pane. A new browser

tab or window opens to the Cisco App Center.

3. Search for Cisco Nexus Insights application using the search bar.

4. Select the Cisco Nexus Insights application you want to download and click Download

5. Review the license agreement and, if OK, click Agree and download. The Cisco Nexus Insights

application is downloaded to your local machine.

6. Note the download location of the Cisco Nexus Insights file on your local machine.

7. Move the downloaded Cisco Nexus Insights file to a http server, which can then be uploaded to

Cisco Nexus Dashboard.

Add a Site on Cisco Nexus Dashboard Using GUI

Use this procedure to add a site on to the Cisco Nexus Dashboard using GUI. Any apps installed on

Cisco Nexus Dashboard can access the added sites.

See Cisco Nexus Dashboard User Guide for more information.

Before you begin

•You have installed and configured the Cisco Nexus Dashboard.

•You must have administrator credentials to add a site on Cisco Nexus Dashboard.

Procedure

1. Log in to the Cisco Nexus Dashboard GUI with admin privileges.

2. Click Sites on the left navigation pane.

3. Click Actions > *Add Site.

4. On the Add Site page enter the following:

◦Site Name, Controller IP, User Name, Password, Login Domain, and In-band EPG. Controller

IP is a comma separated list of IP addresses to access the site.

5. Click Add to add a site to the node. Any apps installed on Cisco Nexus Dashboard can access the

added sites.

6. Continue with the installation of the Cisco Nexus Insights application on Cisco Nexus Dashboard

using GUI.

Prerequisites

•Precision Time Protocol (PTP) must be enabled on Cisco APIC. In Cisco APIC, choose System >

System Settings > Precision Time Protocol > Admin State to enable PTP.

•Telemetry Priority must be selected for your ACI fabric node control policy’s feature selection.

In Cisco APIC, choose Fabric > Fabric Policies > Policies > Monitoring > Fabric Node Controls

> your policy name > Feature Selection to select Telemetry Priority.

•For a single pod fabric, Grand Master Clock can be connected in the fabric. For a Multi-Pod

fabric, Grand Master Clock must be in the IPN.

•NTP must be enabled on Cisco APIC.

Installing Cisco Nexus Insights App on Cisco Nexus

Dashboard

Use this procedure to install Cisco Nexus Insights application on the Cisco Nexus Dashboard using

GUI.

Before enabling the Cisco NI app, ensure that Cisco Nexus Dashboard cluster has at

least three healthy master nodes.

Before you begin

•You have installed and configured the Cisco Nexus Dashboard. See the Cisco Nexus Dashboard

Deployment Guide.

•You must have administrator credentials to install Cisco NI application.

•You have downloaded the app from Cisco DC App Center.

Procedure

1. Log in to the Cisco Nexus Dashboard GUI with admin privileges.

2. In the Navigation pane, choose Service Catalog.

3. You can download and install the app from the AppStore. In the Navigation pane, choose

Service Catalog > AppStore.

a. In the Cisco NI tile, click Install. Cisco NI will download the application directly from the

Cisco DC App Center and install it. After the process completes, the application will be

available in your Service Catalog.

b. Once the application installation is completed, click Enable.

4. You can also manually install the app.

a. Click Actions > Upload App.

b. In the URL enter the http address and click Upload. Click Refresh icon to check the

upload status.

c. Once the application installation is completed, click Enable.

5. Select Deployment Profile from the menu. The deployment profile defines the resources that

the Cisco Nexus Dashboard will allocate to the Cisco NI app.

6. Click Enable.

7. Once the application is enabled, click Open. The No Sites Enabled page is displayed.

8. Click Configure Sites to set up the Cisco NI app. See Setting Up Cisco Nexus Insights Application

for details.

Setting Up Cisco Nexus Insights Application

Use the following procedure to complete the initial setup of Cisco NI app.

1. In the Nexus Insights Setup page, click Configure.

The Cisco Nexus Insights Setup page enables you to configure the Cisco NI application setup for

multi-site and flow configuration. You can also enable or disable Early Access Mode on the

Nexus Insights Setup page.

Make sure the following fields are checked for the Cisco NI application.

a. Multi-Site and Flow Configuration. See Cisco NI Multi-Site Setup

b. Toggle to enable or disable Early Access Mode.

c. Prerequisites for Nexus Insights.

2. Click Done. The Begin First Time Setup page is displayed.

3. The second time you launch the Cisco NI application, the Welcome page is displayed. Check Do

not show on launch for the Welcome page to not appear again.

4. Click Get Started to access the application.

The following is an example for Nexus Insights Setup configuration page.

The Multi-Site setup enables you to onboard the site. Click Edit Configuration for a list of sites,

status, and flow analytics status. The site status is disabled by default.

The Early Access Mode allows you to enable beta Nexus Insights features and enhancements. Once

the beta features are enabled, they cannot be disabled.

Cisco NI Multi-Site Setup

The Multi-Site and flow configuration enables you to enable or onboard the site from the list of

available sites on Cisco NI.

1. Click Settings > Nexus Insights Setup > Edit Configuration for a list of sites, status, enable,

and disable sites. The site status is disabled by default. The Nexus Insights Setup - Multi-Site

Configuration page displays the list of sites that were added to the node.

2. From the SW Analytics drop-down menu, choose Enable to apply streaming policies onto the

site and onboard the site.

3. From the Flow Analytics drop-down menu, choose Enable to enable flow telemetry

configuration for that site.

When you disable or offboard a site, the site status is then disabled and flow analytics is

automatically disabled.

You can choose to enable software telemetry and flow telemetry per site. See Flow Rules

Configuration to configure flow rules.

4. From the Microbrust Sensitivity drop-down menu, choose Enable to enable the micro-burst

status for the site. The status is disabled by default.

Based on the percentage of threshold, micro-burst is either low, high, or medium.

The percentage of threshold is inverse to sensitivity. When the number of micro-bursts are greater

than 100 on a particular interface, an anomaly is raised.

Cisco NI app collects the micro-burst data for the selected sites. Micro-burst anomalies are raised on

the interface of the node. See Micro-Burst Support for Interface Statistics for details.

Disabling and Deleting Cisco Nexus Insights App on

Cisco Nexus Dashboard

Before you begin

You need administrator credentials for Cisco Nexus Dashboard.

Procedure

1. Log in to {product-name-ase} as an admin.

2. In the Navigation pane, choose Service Catalog to view the apps hosted on Cisco Nexus

Dashboard.

3. Select the Cisco Nexus Insights app.

4. Click and then click Disable to disable the app.

5. Click and then click Delete to delete the app.

Installing Cisco NI on Cisco Application Services

Engine

Use this procedure to install Cisco Nexus Insights application on the Cisco Application Services

Engine using GUI.

Before you begin

•You have installed and configured the Cisco Application Services Engine.

•You must have administrator credentials to install Cisco NI application.

Procedure

1. Log in to the Cisco Application Services Engine GUI with admin privileges.

2. Click Apps tab on the left navigation bar.

3. Click Actions > Upload App from the far-right side.

4. In the URL enter the http address and click Upload. Click Refresh icon on the far-right side

of the Downloads work pane to check the upload status.

5. When the application installation is completed, the application icon appears with the Enable

button.

6. Click Enable the application. A pre-enable Details dialog appears and then a post-enable Details

dialog appears.

7. Once the application enable is completed, the application icon appears with a Launch App

button.

8. Click Launch App from the Cisco NI application dialog. The application opens with a splash

screen welcome dialog for Cisco NI.

9. Click Begin First Time Setup to setup the Cisco NI application. See Setting Up Cisco Nexus

Insights Application.

Disabling Cisco Nexus Insights App on Cisco

Application Services Engine

Before you begin

Make sure you have administrator credentials for Cisco Application Services Engine.

Procedure

1. Log in to Cisco Application Services Engine GUI with admin privileges.

2. Click the Apps tab on the top navigation bar.

3. Click Disable on the top right corner of the Cisco Nexus Insights application dialog.

4. Click Yes on the disable application dialog. You can re-enable the Cisco Nexus Insights

application on the Cisco Nexus Insights application dialog.

Deleting Cisco Nexus Insights App on Cisco

Application Services Engine

Before you begin

•You must disable the Cisco Nexus Insights app before you delete the app.

•You need administrator credentials for Cisco Application Services Engine.

Procedure

1. Log in to Cisco Application Services Engine GUI with admin privileges.

2. Click the Apps tab on the top navigation bar.

3. Click Delete on the top right corner of the Cisco NI application dialog.

4. Click Yes on the delete application dialog. The Cisco NI application is removed.
