and automatically seals the compartment. The sample tray of the Smart OMNI-Transmission can
be easily removed for thorough cleaning.
Feature Description
Main cover
The accessory's cover is designed specifically for single step, snap-in
place functionality, allowing for easy installation and removal. A uniform
fit ensures a tight seal.
Cell/Card
Holder Tray
The Cell/Card Holder Tray orients one way and rests within the Smart
OMNI-Transmission accessory cover. The Tray features a slotted "well"
to hold the various transmission cells and cards
Plastic Inserts
Once a cell has been installed into the well of the Cell/Card Holder Tray,
attach the insert with the black thumbscrew. Three inserts are shipped
with the accessory. One is for the EZ-Flow Cell and the other two can be
customized for all other cells.
Well Cover
Once a cell has been installed inside the well of the Cell/Card Holder
Tray, place this cover over it. When using IR Cards and Polystyrene
Cards, place the cover over the well and slide cards into cover's slot.
Features and benefits
The ergonomic design of the accessory's cover gives an integrated appearance to the Thermo
Scientific spectrometer, ensuring a uniform, tight seal to the main compartment for ultra-fast

purge. This capability drastically reduces the length of time between sample analysis
experiments and is extremely advantageous when analyzing numerous samples in succession.
The enclosed design of the accessory protects the spectometer's main compartment from
accidental spillage.
Installing the accessory
The Smart OMNI-Transmission accessory fits into the guides on the side walls of the sample
compartment. Once the accessory is installed, it automatically connects to the purge system of
the spectrometer.
To install the accessory
1. Check that the spectrometer is turned on.
2. If the side wall adapters are in place inside the sample compartment of the spectrometer,
remove them.
3. If any cables are installed toward the back of the sample compartment, remove them.
4. Remove the snap-in baseplate or any other accessories installed inside the sample
compartment. The automatic features of the Smart OMNI-Transmission accessory will not
operate properly if you leave the snap-in baseplate in the sample compartment.
5. If the sample compartment cover is attached, remove it.
6. Insert the accessory. Firmly grasp the handle of the OMNI-Transmission accessory and lower
it straight down into the sample compartment and press gently until the accessory locks in
place.
Measuring samples
The Smart OMNI-Transmission accessory allows you to measure samples in a variety of physical
states and forms.

Analyzing solids
Choosing an appropriate transmission cell or infrared card depends on the type of sample to be
analyzed. Generally, the two types of samples that are analyzed with these cells and cards are
powders and films
Analyzing powders
Cells for the infrared analyses of powders are:
The Magnetic KBr Pellet Holder (P/N 0016-008)
The Pellet Holder (P/N 0016-121)
To analyze a powder sample
1. Prepare a pellet. Refer to the Pellet Holder User's Manual for sample preparation and the
exact proportions of prepared sample material to the KBr matrix.
2. Place the pellet into the Pellet Holder and slide unit into the OMNI-Transmission accessory.
Slide the Cell in Slot #1. Refer to the "Accessory placement table" for proper orientation.
3. When purging the accessory, place the OMNI-Transmission accessory WellCover over the
Pellet Holder and allow two minutes for the purge to eliminate carbon dioxide and water vapor
inside the sample environment.
4. Measure the sample.
Analyzing films
Cell Holders for the infrared analyses of films are:
The Magnetic Film Holder (P/N 0022-002)
The Film Sample Card (P/N 0026-021)
To analyze a film sample
1. Prepare the film according to the instructions found in the Cell Holder User's Manual.
4

2. Place the film onto the Film Holder and slide the Film Holder into the OMNI-Transmission
accessory. Slide the Cell Slot #1. Refer to the "Accessory placement table" for proper ori-
entation.
3. When purging the accessory, place the OMNI-Transmission accessory Well Cover over the
Film Holder and allow two minutes or less for the purge to eliminate carbon dioxide and water
vapor inside the sample compartment.
4. Measure the sample.
Analyzing liquids
A variety of infrared transmission cells are available to carry out routine and qualitative analyses
of liquids. Cell choice greatly depends on several factors associated with sample materials;
viscosity, concentration, volume, absorbance values, ease-of-use and/or analytical methods.
Precise or elongated pathlengths increase infrared sensitivity for more qualitative studies.
Cells ideal for highly accurate quantitative analyses of liquids are:
Cavity Cell Holder (P/N FT04-033)
Sealed Cell (P/N FT04-035)
10mm Pathlength Demountable Liquid Cell (P/N 0004-###)
25mm Pathlength Demountable Liquid Cell (P/N 0004-###)
50mm Pathlength Demountable Liquid Cell (P/N 0004-###)
Cells ideal for routine analyses of liquids are:
Demountable Cell (P/N FT04-036)
Bolt Down Holder (P/N FT04-060)
EZ-Fill Bolt Down Holder (P/N FT54-019)
EZ-Flow Cell (P/N FT64-029)

Measuring samples
To analyze a liquid sample using a liquid cell
1. Prepare the sample and the Cell according to the instructions found in the Cell User's Manual.
2. Slide the Cell into the OMNI-Transmission accessory. Refer to the "Accessory placement
table" for proper orientation.
3. When purging the accessory, place the OMNI-Transmission accessory Well Cover and the
appropriate plastic insert over the Cell then allow two minutes for the purge to eliminate
carbon dioxide and water vapor inside the sample compartment.
4. Measure the sample.
To analyze a liquid sample using a 3M card
1. Prepare the sample and the Card according to the instructions found in the Card User's
Manual.
2. Place the Well Cover of the OMNI-Transmission accessory over the Well and slide the Card
into the Well Cover slot. Refer to the "Accessory placement table" for proper orientation.
3. Measure the sample.
Analyzing gases
The 50mm Demountable Gas Cell is ideal for analyzing high concentration gases (>1%). The
outer aluminum sleeve of the accessory protects the cell which is constructed of Pyrex for
chemical resistivity, keeping metal parts from coming in contact with the gases. This cell is easy
to use and disassemble for thorough cleaning.
To analyze a gas sample
1. Prepare the sample and the Cell according to the instructions found in the accessories User's
Manual.
2. Slide the Cell into the OMNI-Transmission accessory. Refer to the "Accessory placement
table" for proper orientation..
3. Measure the sample.

Cleaning the accessory
1. Use a cotton swab or tissue moistened with water or an appropriate solvent to remove any
residue in the well or on the tray surface.
2. If necessary, the Cell/Card Holder Tray can be removed for thorough cleaning and wiped dry
with a clean cloth. Remove the tray from the OMNI-Transmission accessory by lifting it
straight up. Once the tray is clean and dry, it is ready to be reinstalled.
Note It is important not to have any solvents left on the accessory. Out-gassing may cause
unwanted peaks in the spectra.
Removing the accessory
You can remove a Smart Accessory as easily as you installed it. When not in use, your accessory
should be stored in a dust-free environment such as a cabinet or box.
