This section describes the conventions and acronyms used in this guide.
Various conventions are used to help you quickly identify special formatting.
Table 1 describes these conventions and provides examples of their use.
Various acronyms are used in place of the full definition. Table 2 presents

Overview
The e231 integrates the Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet and VeriFone's PAYware Mobile
technology to create a robust Windows-based mobile point of sale (mPOS)
platform solution. The e231 offers a unique combination of best-in-class security,
processing speed, and enterprise class features - such as rapid barcode scanning
and an encrypting magnetic card reader.

Observe the following guidelines when using the e231.
Environmental
Factors
Do not use the device where there is high heat, dust, humidity, moisture, or
caustic chemicals or oils.
Keep the unit away from direct sunlight and anything that radiates heat, such
as a stove or a motor.
Electrical
Considerations
Avoid using this product during electrical storms.
Avoid locations near electrical appliances or other devices that cause
excessive voltage fluctuations or emit electrical noise (for example, air
conditioners, electric motors, neon signs, high-frequency or magnetic security
devices, or computer equipment).
Do not use the e231 near water or in moist conditions.
Unpacking the
Shipping Carton
Open the shipping carton and carefully inspect its contents for possible tampering
or shipping damage. The e231 is a secure product and any tampering can cause
it to cease to function or to operate in an unsecured manner.
1Remove and inspect the contents of the shipping carton, the carton should
include the following:

2Remove all plastic wrapping from the terminal and components.
3Save the shipping carton and packing material for future repacking or moving

WARNING
Due to risk of shock or damage, do not use the e231 near water, including a

swimming pool.

Do not use a device that appears to be damaged.

Before you continue with the installation process, review the features of the e231:

A Removable Module that contains a Micro-USB plug and serves a
locking attachment for the tablet to e231. The micro-USB plug is the
primary communication and power charging path between the Dell Venue

To be able to scan barcodes and process credit card payments, you need to
attach a Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet to the e231. You can’t use the e231 as a
standalone device.

To attach the tablet, you should remove the micro-USB plug module from the e231
casing.
1On the upper left side of the e231 back panel, turn the locking screws
counter-clockwise. Then pull out the micro-USB plug module.

2Slide the tablet into the e231.

3Align the module’s micro-USB plug to the port on the tablet and the guiding
pins to the slots on the e231. Insert the micro-USB plug module. Make sure
you insert the module securely before locking it in place.

The Micro-USB port on the e231 provides power charging for the tablet’s battery.
To charge the tablet 1Connect the Micro-USB plug into the port located at the bottom of the e231.
2Connect the other end of the Micro-USB cable into the host computer’s USB

Barcode Reader
Use either of the two action buttons to activate the barcode reader (see Figure
14).
To scan barcodes 1Press and hold either button to activate the reader and illuminate the barcode
laser.
2Point the laser at the target code, adjusting the position as necessary. Do not
release the button until the application indicates a successful scan or when
the product information displays on the tablet screen.

Use the magnetic stripe reader to perform signature debit or credit card
transactions.
To conduct a debit or

1Position the card with the magnetic stripe facing in the same direction as the
back panel, away from the tablet.
2To ensure a proper read of the magnetic card, insert the card from the top, as
shown in Figure 15.
