This manual is structured to enable a technician with no
previous knowledge of the system, to become familiar with
the operation and maintenance of the equipment. The
safety section of the manual explains the inherent dangers
presented by any type of desoldering/soldering equipment
and warnings to minimize the risk of injury through igno
rance.

MAINTENANCE
ChangingFuses 
Fuses shouldonly be changed with the equipment switched
off,andtheequipmentisolatedfromtheelectricalsupplyby
removingtheIECplugfromthemachi ne.
T he fuse of the main unit is located at the back of the
equipment and is changed by withdrawing the fuse holder
andwithdrawingthe fuse.
Onlyreplacewiththesametype,sizeandvalue.Thecorrect
fuseratingsareoutlinedbelow:

MAINTENANCE
Cleaning
Attheendofeachworkingday,wipeanyexcessfluxand/or
solder pastefromtheequipmentwithacleancloth.
Periodicallycleantheexposedsurfacesoftheequipme ntwith
softclothandantistaticfoamcleaner.
T helensassemblyshouldbecleanedusingIsopropylalcohol.
Make surethatthelens clothis clean. Any contaminationof
theclothcouldcausescratchingofth eglasssurfaces.
Caution: Do not use solvents for cleaning any part of the
equipment astheymaydamagethefinish.
WARNING: All cleaning and/or maintenance should be
performed when the machine is switched off and isolated
from the main supply. The system must have been allowed to
cool down to room temperature so as to avoid burns or
other damages from hot parts of the machine.

Temperaturemayreachahighof500°Cwhenturnedon.
 Do not use touch the white ceramic heating element inside
thePreheater.
 Do not expose naked eye to the Inf raRed light. It may
causes eriousdamageoftheeye.
 Do not allow the Infra Red light to come into contact with
any exposed skin other than for a very short period, si nce
tissuedamagemayresult.
To eliminate the possibility of accidental operation of the
footswitchensurethatitislocatedinaposi tionwhere nothing
canrestorfallonit.

Neverdroporsharplyjolttheunit.
 Contains delicate parts such as IR lamps that may break if
unitisdropped.
Donotspillanyliquidtothesystem.
Do not tamper with the electrical control unit or any wiring 
youmay besubjectedtoasevereelectricshock.
Toavoidoverheating,disconnectplugwhennottobeusedfora
longperiodoftime.Turnoffpowerduringbreaks.
To eliminate the possibility of burns, allow time for the
equipmenttocoolbeforecommencingmaintenance.

REWORKING TIPS
U seFluxGel.Whenitturnsfromag elintoafl uid/liquid,this
indicates that the PCB is preheated and you can apply heat
using the Solderlight gun. Flux Gel also helps placement of
thecompon ent.
If the Preheater tempe ratureis too low orpreheating time
too short,whenyou apply the Solderlight gun,theheat will
be conducted away by the PC B's ground plane, whi ch will
increasethetimeittakestoreflow.

Whent hesolderisfullymolten,tapthePCB,andwatchthe
surface tension of the solder draw th e componentinto per

OPERATING PROCEDURE
StartUp
T urn onthepowerswitchandcheckifthemainunitdisplays
atemperatureonthereadout.
Oncetheunitisswitchedon,thefanwilloperatetocoolthe
Solderlight gun.This is normal. Select t he corre ct operating
temperatures for the Preheater and the Solderlight gun.
Leavetheequipmenttostabil izeforabout10minutesbefore
starti nganyrework.
Soldering/Desolderingacomponent
Set the Temperature  (Solderlight gun 220
°
C  380°C, Pre
heater180°C)
AlwaysplacePCBonboardsupport,withthecomponentover
thecentreofthePreheater.
Alwaysapplyfluxtojointsbeforereflow.
Before replacing a component, check that there is enough
solderonthe padstosoldernewcomponent.
Beforereplacingacomponent,checkthatthenewcomponent
doesnothaveanybentleads.
Removing/Replacing acomponent
Applyfluxtosolderjoints.
Preheatwaiting3090secondsforthefluxtoturnintoliquid.
Reflow  use the Solderlightgun (there will be two bursts of
smoke(fluxflumes),andonthesecondone,youshouldhave
reachedreflow).
RemovecomponentwiththeSolderlightraised about30mm
abovethecomponentandusingtweezers,oravacuumpen.

Equipmentmustbeplacedona flatstablesurfaceofatleastone
squaremeterandataheightthatsuitstheuser.
Thelightingshouldnotbesobright.Itshouldnotaffecttheuser
fromviewingtheI.R.spot.

ofotherdevices.
Setup
The Solderlight  Gun and the Preheater should be placed close
togetherandaccessibletotheuser.
ConnecttheSolderlightguntotheba ckofthemainunit.Connect
thePreheatertothebackofthemainunit.PlacetheFootswitch
on the ground where it cannot be accidentally ope rated. Then
pluginthepowercords.
T heSolderlightisdesigned forreworkondoublesidedandmixed
technologyprintedcircuitboards.Thetopheatisderivedfroma
200Wattshortwave I.R.lampfocusedthroughasystem.The
bottomheaterdeliversamaximumo f650Wattsmediumwave
I.R.Innormaluse,approximately25%oftheene rgyisprovided
bythetopheater,and75%oftheenerg yisprovidedbythepre
he ater.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
Infra RedLamp
The200WattInfraRed(I.R.)lampislocatedinthel amphousing
at the  front end of the hand unit. The lamp emits mostly short
waveI.R.radiationatapproximately1.0micronwavelength.
TopHeat
Thetopheataddsheattotheprocessandbringsthesolderjoint
temperature up to reflow. The heating process of the Focused
Infrared Welding system is a combination of the Solderlight gun
andthe Preheater.ThePreheater heatsthePCB,pads,andleads
of the component up to 120140° C and the Solderlight gun
increasesthetemperaturefurtheruntilyoureachreflow.
WhatSolderlightguntemperatureshouldyouuse?
Between180380°C.Onlyi ncreasetheguntemperature afteryou
haveincreasedthePreheatertotherequiredtemperature.Always
preheat the  PCB (between 30 90 seconds) to allow the heat to
conduct through the component before applying the Solderlight
gun.
What's the working distanceoftheSolderlight gun and how do I
moveitforrework?
Approximately 510mm when reworking and move up to 30mm
when removing  Component  move the hand tool in a scanning
motiontoheatleads,takingaboutonesecondforeachscanofthe
component.

Preheater
The Preheater's function is to preheat the PCB and component;
thisprotects thePCB fromdelaminating andthe compone ntfrom
thermalshock.ThePreheater alsoequalizestheconductiveeffect
ofthegroundplaneofthePCB.
The ceramic heater preheats the PCB and the heat conducts
throughthePCBandpreheatsthecomponent,sowhenyouapply
the Solderlight gun there is no chance of thermal shock. The
balance of heat energy supplied should be approximately 75%
fromthePreheaterand25%fromtheSolderlightgun.
WhatBackHeatsettingshould youuse?
Generally180°Csetonthe Preheaterisagood startingpoint.If
theprocesstakeslongerthan180secondsthenincreasethePre
heaterby20°Cincrementstoreducetimetaken.Withthecorrect
PreheatersettingthetopofthePCBwillreachapproximately120
140°Cinabout60120seconds.
Whydoweneedthegoggles?
Thegoggleshastwomajorfunctions,oneistoenableyoutosee
thefocusedinfraredlightforprecisionsoldering,theotherfunction
istoprotectyoureyesfromharmfuleffects.
