1.4 Please consider the following points:
1.4.1 General Instructions
Be sure to pull power plug before opening the equipment!
Never operate system while housing is open!
Provided that the system is operated properly, the UV is blocked off completely, eliminating
any danger to operators, make sure to avoid direct irradiation during initial installation on
the equipment!
Transport Safety Cushions
During transport the lamp is protected by foam cushions. Failure to remove these will destroy
the lamp, as it is also electrically disconnected during transport. To remove the transport safety
cushions, see Section 4.3.
Power Supply
The intelligent electronic power supply of the unit will adapt automatically to all AC currents from
110 to 240 Volts and 50 to 60 Hz. Connect power cord to a properly grounded AC outlet.
UV Light Guide
Treat the light guide with care, it is an optical instrument. Do not kink, crush, or bend it
too sharply to avoid light losses.
When using a dual branch liquid light guide the two branches must be positioned vertically
above each other in the light guide socket in the front panel. Only this position ensures
maximum radiation output. For technical reasons, the radiated power of the two branches may
differ up to a ratio of 40:60 percent. For assembly see Section 4.4.
Ventilation
Cooling air is sucked through ventilation slots at the bottom of the unit and hot air is expelled at
the back. Both slots must not be obstructed in order to allow free ventilation. Obstruction of
these openings, or failure of the fan will cause the unit to overheat. In this case, the lamp is
switched off and the red LED 5 will light up, see Section 6.2 and 6.3.

1 Please observe the following (continued)
Vapors of Solvents
Vapors of fluorinated or chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents will corrode the lamp and the quartz
lenses – even in small concentrations. Avoid these solvents in the vicinity of the unit. If you
cannot avoid them, place the unit as high as possible, as vapors are heavier than air.
Explosive Zones
This unit is not meant for operation in explosive zones.
Protection against UV Radiation
To avoid human tissue damage, do not expose the unprotected eye or skin to the ultraviolet
light. For more information on UV radiation see Section 2.2.
Wear UV protective glasses and UV protective gloves!
1.4.2 Special Instructions
Lamp Life Time
Based on an average power-on time of 8 hours per day, the lamp has an expected operating life
time of at least 1,500 hours. Lamp life depends on length of operating intervals, as each ignition
process wears the lamp considerably.
Frequent on/off switching results in premature deterioration of the lamp. Do not switch
off for idle periods of less than 3 hours.
The lamp contains mercury. Do not discard with regular trash.
Dispose of as hazardous waste in accordance with local rules and regulations.
To control the curing process, the UV power output of the system should be monitored on a
regular basis with a radiometer. Use a Zeta
®
7020 Radiometer (available only in North America)
or similar unit.
Lamp Handling
Any contamination, such as fingerprints on the glass, which has not been removed will bake to
the envelope, and result in premature deterioration of performance.
Fingerprints can be removed with a lint-free kerchief and pure alcohol.
The envelope can burst in rare occasions – especially if the lamp is very old. Some reasons
may be etched fingerprints on the envelope, or frequent on/off switching.
Broken lamps will release mercury.
Strategy:
Remove every person near the UV Wand System at once to prevent them from
inhaling mercury vapors. The room should be well ventilated (minimum 30 minutes). After
the lamp housing/fragments have cooled, the mercury residue should be collected with
the use of a special absorbing agent available from laboratory equipment suppliers. The
method of mercury disposal must comply with local rules and regulations for disposal of
hazardous materials.

1 Please observe the following (continued)
4
Overheating
If the maximum operating temperature is exceeded, the lamp is automatically switched off and
the red LED 5 lights up. The fan, however, continues to run. After the unit has cooled off
sufficiently, the red LED will go out and the lamp can be ignited again. Overheating can occur
from the obstruction of ventilation slots or high ambient temperatures. The rotation of the fan is
also monitored electronically.
Repairs and Service
Always disconnect the power cord before opening up the unit. Do not attempt any repairs
except exchanging the lamp-module, see Section 4.3. Refer all other repairs to an authorized
service center.
High voltages are present inside unit.
1.5 Field of Application (Intended Usage)
The UV Wand System UVC 97034 is suitable for the curing of Loctite
®
UV Products at industrial
workstations such as in shops, laboratories, and automated assembly lines.
The radiation spectrum and performance provided is especially matched to the requirements of
UV curing adhesives and coating materials. In this manner, the curing of products to a dry and
non-sticky surface is possible in a short time.
The UV Wand System contains controller, UV shutter, starter, timer, cooling fan, and the lamp
module. The opening times of the shutter are adjustable whereby exact and repeatable curing
results can be obtained. It also contains the power supply unit and all controls for operating
the system.
With proper operation of the UV shutter, the UV lamp is effectively shielded so that no danger to
operating personnel occurs.
The light-proof design of the UV Wand System ensures a high degree of occupational safety.
The shutter is driven by a stepper motor. High reliability and short exposure times, shortest time
is 50 ms, are the benefits of this design.
With all UV lamps, a loss of power is given by the consumption of the electrodes and the fall-out
of the burned tungsten at the lamp envelope.
The DC powered UV lamps are comparatively stable as opposed to AC powered UV lamps.
Because the electrode flow is uniform, and therefore the electrode consumption is small, the fall-
out of the burned mercury at the lamp is also reduced. Furthermore, the electronics of the UV
Wand System controls the performance of the lamp to 200 W ±1%. This control reduces the
loss of power.

2 Description
2.1 Theory of Operation
The UV Wand System is a high-power lamp system for the curing of UV adhesives. The lamp’s
emission spectrum and radiant power capacity were designed specifically to meet the
requirements of UV-curable Loctite
®
adhesives and coating compounds. Absolutely dry and tack-
free surfaces can be obtained very quickly.
The radiation time must be determined by trial and can be preset to ensure precise repeatability of
curing results. In order to reduce the thermal load on substrates, visible light and IR are filtered.
2.2 UV Spectra
Avoid direct radiation of the skin and eyes under all circumstances!
The ultraviolet spectrum is divided into three sections:
UVA 315 nm – 380 nm
UVB 280 nm – 315 nm
UVC 100 nm – 280 nm
UVA is a part of natural sunlight and its most visible effect on human tissue is the tan. Its
intensity is easily underestimated, as it is not visible. An overdose of UVA will not cause a
UV-erythema (sunburn), but a heat-erythema similar to visible light.
UVB is more aggressive than UVA, and also a part of natural sunlight. It has the same
negative effects on human tissue as natural sunlight, the most common being the
UV-erythema (sunburn).
UVC is even more aggressive than UVB, it can cause severe tissue damage with an increased
risk of skin cancer.

2.2.1 UV Wand System UVC 97034
This unit is generally equipped with "UVA + UVB + UVC + blue" band-pass filter which is
integrated into the unit. The blue light serves as pilot light.
When working with UVB and UVC extra precautions must be taken and operating personnel
must be completely shielded from the UV radiation.
2.2.2 Comparative UV Measurements
Competitive units may have a different spectral output. A comparison of radiation power of
different units is only possible if they emit the same spectrum.
This unit gives you superior UV output through state-of-the-art technology. Data on UV radiation
power is deliberately not given as common standards of measurement do not exist. The
measuring instruments of different manufacturers deliver data which are not comparable.
However, you are invited to compare – but use the same measuring instrument.

4 Installation (continued)
4.5 Handling of the Light Guide
Wear UV protective glasses and UV protective gloves!
4.5.1 Handling Distance
Generally a distance of 10 - 15 mm from the work piece is ideal. In some cases, the distance
should be greater; in others the distance could be smaller.
If the distance is too small, the adhesive vaporizes. As a result, the lens of the Light Guide will
get contaminated and the performance will deteriorate.
If the distance is too great, the performance will be insufficient to get a curing result.
The greater the distance, the greater the area of exposure, the smaller the intensity of the lamp.
4.5.2 Handling Attitude
Handle the Light Guide so that the cone of light shows away from the body.
Danger of glare!
A better way is to mount the Light Guide (reference section 4.5.2), and place the component to
be cured under the ultraviolet light.
For additional protection, a UV curtain should be mounted between the UV work area and the
adjacent workplace.
4.5.3 Removal of the Light Guide
Remove the light guide by firmly gripping the strain relief near the light guide retainer and pull
out firmly.
Never pull on the jacketing portion of the light guide!
4.6 Startup in Cold Conditions
Switch on the power switch 10 on the backside of the unit.
The green LED “U” will light up on the front panel and the fan will begin to operate. You may leave
the main switch permanently in the on position and turn the power on and off with the main supply.
Press and hold the green lamp ignition button 8 until it lights up.
As soon as the lamp has been ignited and stabilized, the ignition button will light up, and you
may release it. After ignition this button is without function. After approximately 3 minutes, the
lamp reaches its rated power of 200 W, and the yellow LED “P” will light up.
4.7 Startup in Hot Conditions
After the unit is switched off, wait at least 3 minutes prior to reignition.
Frequent on/off switching results in premature deterioration of the lamp.
Do not switch off for idle periods of less than 3 hours.

5 Curing
5.1 Setting of the Exposure Time
Press buttons in the upper line to decrease the
exposure time or the buttons + in the lower line to
increase the exposure time.
The time range is from 000.1 s up to 999.9 s. The
smallest step is 0.1 s
5.2 Start Exposure Time
Push start button 4 or press the foot switch, shutter opens, and exposure cycle starts.
Start button lights up during exposure time. When the exposure cycle has timed out, the shutter
closes, and the start button extinguishes.
5.3 Working with the Light Guide
Position the light guide so that UV energy is directed at the adhesive. The distance should be
no closer than approximately 6-8 mm (approximately 0.25 inch) to prevent vapors from
accumulating on the wand. Distance and exposure time should initially be monitored to insure
that the adhesive or substrate are not burned.
5.4 PLC Interface - Optional Kit # 8900399
The unit is equipped with an interface for computer controlled systems. This interface permits
you to control and monitor six important system parameters via Programmable Logic Control
units. The interface is galvanically isolated from the power supply by opto-couplers, and is read
out by means of the external voltage supplied by the PLC unit only, see Section 12.
The following functions are available:
Action (Input signal):
Lamp ignition
Timer start
Signal (Output signal):
System overheated
Lamp ready / full power
Shutter open
Ignition successful
Adaption to PLC System Voltages
Different PLCs could have different output voltages. Therefore, it is necessary to adapt the
voltages of the PLC to the UV Wand System 97034. For the input signals a resistor R1 should
be mounted; for the output signals a resistor R2.
For further information see Section 12.

6 Protective Devices
7 Cleaning
6.1 Safety Switch
A safety switch is mounted in the housing where the control cam of the top cover interferes.
Operation of the system is not possible when the top cover is removed or not correctly mounted.
Removing, jumpering or over-riding of the safety devices can result in damage to the unit
and is therefore prohibited!
6.2 Excess Temperature Protection
The UV Wand system is provided with a thermostatic switch for monitoring maximum
temperature inside the housing.
This switch, mounted on the heat sink of the PCB, turns the lamp off, if temperature
is excessive.
If excess temperature protection is actuated, check cooling slots and fan.
When the lamp is cooled off, the system can be reignited.
6.3 Fan Control
The rotation of the fan is monitored electronically. Should the fan be obstructed or fail, the lamp
will automatically be switched off or will refuse to ignite.
The UV Wand System needs minimal care and maintenance.
When the lamp module is changed, a cleaning of the lens near the module should be done. This
is only possible if the module is disassembled.
Take a lint-free kerchief with pure alcohol and carefully clean the lens. The Light Guides
should be cleaned, too. They also should be cleaned if they are steamy.
Take a lint-free kerchief with pure alcohol and carefully clean the lenses on both ends.If they
are steamy, and cannot be cleaned, they should be changed.
