1 Description
1.1 General
The Navigation Data Manager is used as serial and Ethernet data distribution
used for NAUTOCONNING (CONNING DISPLAY) and for the MULTI FUNC-
TION SYSTEM (MFS) Radar and ECDIS.
Via the Navigation Data M anager the CONNING DISPLAY or the M ULTI FUNC -
TION SYSTEM receives all required sensor data, status signals and alarms.
The Navigation Data Manager as a central part of a NAUTOCONNING System
has the followin g m ain tasks (see annex, Block diagram):
Registration and adaptation of ethernet data
-- Radar
-- ECDIS
-- e t c .
Registration and adaptation (converting) of serial data-
-- Log
-- N a v R e c
-- W i n d
-- Depth
-- P o s i t i o n
-- e t c .
Registration and converting of analog data to internal digital data
Data Distribution to connected devices (Radar, ECDIS, Conning Display,
Alarm Transfer System etc.)

1.3.1 Navigation Data Manager NDM
(see also Figure: 1--2)
1.3.1.1 General
The NDM consists of a group of up to 12 pcb’s ( 1 m aster and up to 11 slaves).
The hardware of all the slaves is identical, which each pcb has its own
microprocessor.
The NDM--Master is a Vx Works PC.
The pcb’s are located in a 19“ rack.
The back--plane is used as pcb holder and central distribution for the internal
power supply and data transfer per CAN--BUS technology.
External devices are connected via isolated transfer modules (RS232, 20mA,
RS422, RS485, TriState) on the slaves.
Communication with further units takes place via the Ethernet (NavData Inter-
face).
The NDM--Master (defined also as Navigation Data Distribution) determines the
CAN bus configuration, in other words how many slaves with what addresses
are active on the bus.
Every user interface can be freely configured:
-- Module: RS485, RS422, RS232, 20mA, Tr iState
-- Baud rate, parity and data bits
-- “End of Line” char of telegrams
The Navigation Data Distribution can only be configured as follows:
-- IP--Address, Port--Number, with/without data header
Note:
Only the NDM has a Ethernet connection.
The configuration of the NDM is stored in its flash memory.
The configuration is stored in the EEPROMs on the slave pcb’s concerned.

Summary of the most important features of the NDM manager:
-- Configurable user interfaces
-- NMEA telegrams received may have variable format, e.g.:
$GPGLL,5430.22,N,01234.267,W*2E<CR><LF>
$GPGLL,05430.220,N,01234.267,W*2E<CR><LF>
-- selection of data
-- send selected data only
-- join together data from different inputs
1.3.2 Power Supply Pcb 24 V
Transformers and rectifiers are used to generate 24 VDC from the 230 VAC
mains supply. This is then further processed in the DC supply unit to generate
the internal +5 V, +15 V.
1.3.3 Power supply for +5 V, + 15 V
Generates the internal +5 V and +15 V voltages from a 24 VDC input and makes
it available to the control unit via the back--plane.

If one of the LEDs behaves other than in the standard fashion, it is recom-
mended as a first step to exchange the corresponding card (see chap . 2.3.2.1).
If either the ”RUN” or the ”FAULT” LED of one of the cards does not corre -
spond to the standard signal, the first step is to perform a restart.
Proceed as follows:
Switch the device off (see ON/OFF switch, F igure: 1--3 ) and wait for about 25
seconds
Switch the device on again.
If the fault is not overcome in this way, appropriately trained service personnel
should be called.

2.3.2.1 Exchanging the co n t rol unit pcbs
-- Undo the cross--headed fastening screws and remove the cover.
-- Undo the fastening screws of the connector on the front side of the pcb to be
exchanged and pull out the plug.
-- Loosen the pcb’s two fastening screws, and pull the pcb out from the
back--plane by pushing the levers apart, removing the pcb then in a forwards
direction.
-- Configure the new pcb
The pcb configuration is software controlled (flash
memory and program controlled) and has to be done
by trained and qualified personnel only.
